I live alone, but have multiple devices therefore I bought a fanless network appliance with a intel celeron and 4gb of ram and installed opnsense, a network switch, and, a wifi access point. I also own my modem and do not rent it from the ISP. All of this cost like $500 but means I have fast reliable internet for all of my devices and my guests.

It's the cheapest trash that they can get their hands on just to hook people up to their service and you can have a much better experience by building your own home network bit by bit, but it all depends on how easily you can hook up to your ISP. Usually, especially in the US where you have zero consumer rights, the ISP will go above and beyond to keep you on their dogshit hardware, be it due to the fact that you have to pay a monthly fee as you're only renting it, or because it's TR-069 enabled so your ISP can basically spy on you home network at any time and you having your own hardware on the local network side with their device working in "bridge mode" where it only serves as a WAN gateway would put a stop to that.

>>108996999It's not a vulnerability per se, it's just a really nasty thing ISP's use that can be easily misused. On my MikroTik, TR-069 is an optional package. Basically, ISP's use it, so if you have an ISP router, you're "vulnerable". You switch it to a different router, you're not, even if it supports TR-069, it no longer has your ISP's config for it.Also, it's worth mentioning that there are routers without an integrated access point if you want to expand your network without adding one, or if you want to add a separate AP device.

Also, if you do own a house, and a large one at that, and your WiFi coverage is weak, you're truly better off doing what large companies do which is have multiple AP's set up in roaming across the building with Ethernet wiring connecting them and powering them via PoE.
