Why should I buy a $200 router?
>>
wirelessly downloading covid-19 directly into your brain

Irradiating you so that you get cancer and die faster.

Wifi performance is like 50% influenced by the router's CPU but it's plausible that the shit ass 800 MHz single core cortex A7 on a $20 wifi router may be enough for a single user. I'd still get something better "just in case" though.

That's how Windows XP PC's were getting assraped back in the day. No NAT = larger attack surface.
>>
>>108996688
Most modern modems have wifi built into them. I don't know any ISPs that don't do this.

I think even 3rd world countries have this, it's not that expensive.
>>
>>108996822
it's not a modem if it has wifi
>>
>>108996688
just say you're doing a digital detox
>>
>>108996822
If it has Wi-Fi it's a router.

cat6 solved this problem already. just plug it in bro

I live alone, but have multiple devices therefore I bought a fanless network appliance with a intel celeron and 4gb of ram and installed opnsense, a network switch, and, a wifi access point. I also own my modem and do not rent it from the ISP. All of this cost like $500 but means I have fast reliable internet for all of my devices and my guests.
>>
>>108996882
based. i keep thinking that the consumer ARM boards all have higher TDPs than the routers you can but, so i haven't DIY'd anything so far
>>

You don't understand what a modem is.

Modem is tasked with hooking you up to the ISP.
Router is tasked with routing the packets between your local network and the ISP's and so on.
Access point is tasked with giving your network WiFi connectivity.
Switch is tasked with bridging Ethernet devices in your local network.

Your typical ISP device is a so-called "SoHo router" that combines all of the above into one device. It's the cheapest trash that they can get their hands on just to hook people up to their service and you can have a much better experience by building your own home network bit by bit, but it all depends on how easily you can hook up to your ISP. Usually, especially in the US where you have zero consumer rights, the ISP will go above and beyond to keep you on their dogshit hardware, be it due to the fact that you have to pay a monthly fee as you're only renting it, or because it's TR-069 enabled so your ISP can basically spy on you home network at any time and you having your own hardware on the local network side with their device working in "bridge mode" where it only serves as a WAN gateway would put a stop to that.

>TR-069
i'm not really familiar with this. do i have anything to worry about if i have my own router?
>>
>>108996657
2.5Gbps ports, SFP+ for Fiber, bypassing the ISP modem/router, ASUSwrt-Merlin
>>
>>108996960
If you have your own router, no, it's something that's meant to help ISP's configure their customers' hardware transparently, but can be abused by employees. Like that one time a DSP detractor working at Comcast accessed Phil's router to fuck with him, he had full view into his local network as well.
If you buy your own hardware, it'll likely have TR-069 support, but it's something that has to be configured on the device manually. Your ISP has access to their router you rent because they've shipped it pre-configured with TR-069.
>>
>>108996976
okay, thanks. it sounds like a common standard so i was worried that all routers were vulnerable to it
>>
>>108996999
My ASUS RT-BE88U running Asuswrt-Merlin connected to a standalone dumb modem does not have the TR-069 vulnerability.
>>
>>108996657
it is simple. do you need wifi? if so, buy the minimum needed to service the size of your home. if you don't care, just plug your pc right into your modem.

It's not a vulnerability per se, it's just a really nasty thing ISP's use that can be easily misused. On my MikroTik, TR-069 is an optional package. Basically, ISP's use it, so if you have an ISP router, you're "vulnerable". You switch it to a different router, you're not, even if it supports TR-069, it no longer has your ISP's config for it.

Also, it's worth mentioning that there are routers without an integrated access point if you want to expand your network without adding one, or if you want to add a separate AP device.
>>
>>108996657
I don't think it matters unless you need >1Gbps or a WiFi6 mesh that maps your home layout and sends it to the nearest alphabet soup agency
>>
>>108996657
To not be a cuck and so you can install FreshTomato onto it and then perform DNS-level adblocking.

you can buy chinese routers from aliexpress for like $10 that support openwrt
>>
>>108996906
>you can have a much better experience by building your own home network bit by bit
I cannot imagine buying 4 separate devices just to connect to the internet. It has never been tried in my country.
>>

It's a standard thing to do in commercial environments. Obviously excessive for most home users but if you're a power user/nerd/sysadmin you'll like that sort of setup. Also, if you do own a house, and a large one at that, and your WiFi coverage is weak, you're truly better off doing what large companies do which is have multiple AP's set up in roaming across the building with Ethernet wiring connecting them and powering them via PoE.

Why are you asking this when you clearly know the answer to this, Why aren't you questioning the fact that you're a fat retard and you get all your information and entertainment from a single device while sitting at a desk??
>>
>>108996857
actually if it has wifi it is an access point
>>
>>108996657
build your own. get a wifi7 AP. why am I telling you this? i fucking hate zoomers. KILL YOURSELF!
>>
>>108997374
I bought a separate wired router when I got tired of my internet dying a couple times a week because the wifi router was garbage at routing. The old wifi router was relegated to an AP in bridge mode. Zero problems in like five years.
>>
>>108996657
>Why should I buy a $200 router?
It's the software/os on something like mikrotik and you'll know when you need it. Ofc if you're not into it you'll probably never need it.
>>
>>108996822
Don't let the ISP into your home net.
>>
Man for all the shit Spectrum seems to get, at least they still use a dedicated cable modem so you can still choose to use your own router without any headaches

You're a retard that gets all your information and entertainment from 2 devices?
