>>
>>108997134
The theory is that with IoT you can do things like the toast automatically starting to toast at the time you wake up so it's ready for when you go into the kitchen, because the alarm told the toaster you didn't snooze it, and the fridge confirmed you still have butter for your toast. Of course none of that has ever actually worked in practice, instead you get updates and restarts and the device bricking itself etc.

$400 is poverty tier. This isn't the year 1950 anymore. You can't do anything with this $400. $400 at 10% compounding over 50 years is 47k. You're not getting a 10% compound rate anywhere unless you're rich and can do private investments (then even the absolute tip-top best can't usually break 20% and typically over somewhere a smidgen above 10%). That $400 is infinitely better used to improve your immediate quality of life for the next 50 years (but this isn't that of course).
>>
>>108998314
Good point. I would argue it's best to invest in every day objects that have a high return per dollar. Things that have decent quality and don't break after short time. High price is no guaranty for good quality and user satisfaction.
Other thing is: Lots of tech products don't even improve life quality. Instead of buying an automated soap dispenser the money is better invested in high quality soap with natural ingredients and not buying this industrial corner cut soap slop.
>>
>>108998416
Yes, absolutely. But there are classes of electronics and tools that definitely increase your life quality a lot. For example, maybe you like making bread at home, a breadmaker makes things way easier even though it's not needed. An AC is always a good addition if you have none, etc.
Otherwise though, just investing in higher quality products is a great strategy. It will make you healthier, result in lower expenses over time due to fewer required replacements, and will make you happier. This means you'll live longer and have more energy to do things.

for the first time in my life i have a stable income, and i am still learning to adjust. it feels weird not choosing the cheapest homebrand soap/bread/clothes.
i'm not quite looking for smart toasters (yet?), but i would love suggestions on what is worth it.
>>

>>
>>108997116
We need to study the people who buy these things.
>>108997486
kek
>>
>>108998593
This is a teach a man to fish kinda situation. You need to stick to a framework to figure out what is worth it for you personally, because it depends a lot about your lifestyle and personality. The primary goal is you should never come across a situation where you think "this is annoying" or "this is painful". A good yardstick for this is whether you feel like you want to stay in bed in the morning: ask yourself "why". Then see what solutions may exist for the problem. Typical reasons might be "ugh, another hot as fuck and wet as a pussy day, I don't wanna go to work!". Solution is obviously to control the environmental conditions. AC, dehumidifier (caveat emptor), lighter quality clothes (they're starting to make real linen clothes nowadays), etc. are good options. Maybe you constantly feel bloated, slow and tired. Check your stress and nutrition. Invest in better quality food first, if you can't hit the right micros, get multivitamins or other supplements. Is there something you really like to do, like a hobby? Invest in quality hobby equipment. Is there any chore you do every day that you always think how annoying it is so you put it off to the next day? See if you can find better tools or automated widgets to help with this.
Once you have found something that works, invest in a higher quality version of what you found works for you and upgrade until you are satisfied with the result.
That's the way I go about it at any rate.

And here's the easiest way to decide: if something makes you happy, invest in it. Regardless of what it is that makes you happy, from a shitty slop snack to premium soap or a sports car.
>>
>>108998593
One of the best investments was a large quality stainless steal pot with decent weight for my small kitchen. I use it for cooking soups and stews from scratch. I buy organic food as best as I can and by cooking larger amounts I can meal prep resulting in higher time efficiency and am not forced to buy unhealthy high processed food for time saving. This way I'm able to live more healthy and can perform better at work and in life.
If you don't have a freezer additional to your fridge I'd recommend that too.(for meal prepping) I have a normal fridge freezer combination(not this fake cheap one with fake freezer). The combination saves some electricity in the long run.

I want to give this toaster the benefit of the doubt
Can you still use it by bypassing the touchscreen interface or simply without the touchscreen interface?

And/or

Does the touchscreen interface actually enhance the enduser experience in some way like providing more consistent toasting, or allowing you to monitor the bread temperature during the toasting process, or having some kind of automatic toasting shutoff to prevent burnt toast or the like?
>>
>>108998293
>the toaster automatically starting to toast at the time you wake up
Even in a perfect world that wouldn't work because someone needs to physically put fresh bread into the toaster.
>>
>>108997264
I actually have a few appliances that are extremely overkill with IoT botnet bloat because they go on such deep clearance discounts that they beat out any of the shitty basic models

>>108997478
>I heckin' love babysitting my toasts!

The idea is that you would put the bread in some kind of receptacle that feeds straight into the toaster. Like an automated breadbox, or that you would put the toasts the night before in the toaster and it would get toasted in the morning.
>>
>>108998804
Then you have to put some extra effort into cleaning the bread box and feeding mechanism.

you don't seem to know what electronics are. it has no discrete components, IC's or logic circuits.

it has wires and mechanical linkages with springs that get hot and stretch or compress. there are no electronics in it.
>>
>>109003297
Why does it need voltage if it's not electronic? What are the wires and springs for if not to get heated by electricity. It's certainly not a gas toaster, it's electric is it not?

It's also a Westinghouse when I thought it was M&B. Can't find the cord now, I assume it's in my lungs and blood. Tomorrow I'll clean it, find or make a cord for it, and toast something for /g/ if this thread is still up.
>>
>>109004412
But is it fast, slow, even...?
>>
>>109004798
Slow because you do one side at a time. It's about half the wattage of a modern toaster so that checks out. I don't recall it doing a particularly good or bad job, but it's been a long fucking time, anon, so fuck if I remember. The rivets holding the mica boards together have corroded away, looks like one board is hanging loose so I may need to address that before I plug it in again. Original handles broke off at some point and were replaced with wooden knobs, I think this is common because I see those handles broken in a lot of photos looking at these old toasters. I'm surprised how much it's rusted since I last thought about it. Looks like I won't be finding a cord locally or easily, I'll make or ghetto-rig something for it tomorrow.
>>
>>109004835
I see, that's kinda disappointing actually. I would have thought that with fewer regulations, this could heat up much faster (per side). Ultimately one side at a time is OK anyway because it makes it usable for things like bagels as well. Modern toasters supposedly allow you to disable one side ("bagel mode" and such) but that never works right.

Sometimes old things are shit. It's cool that it's a metal toaster and all but they were really cheaply made, from cheap castings and stampings with old, shitty alloys. They last only because there's very little to break, it's just a nichrome wire connected to mains voltage. Steel corrodes, zinc corrodes, cheap castings are brittle, thin sheet metal warps, plenty of old stuff was shit despite the vintage charm.
>>
>>109004921
Yes, that's why I was asking for details. I know full well that not everything was rainbows and unicorns. Still nicer to have something not quite as good that never breaks over something that is slightly better but needs to be replaced every few years, though.

I'm out of bread. I know these green knobs aren't original, but if you go looking you can find others out there that have them. I think they may have been an off-the-shelf "back of a magazine" solution to the oft-broken handles.
>>
>>108996790
You could just buy a normal toaster.

No. There are only two options, toaster from circa 1926 and smart toaster from 2026. Nothing existed for the hundred years in between.

you don't need to ever connect this shit to the wifi if you dont want too. you retarded fuckheads. also its actually not a bad idea to adjust times automatically with a touch of a button gives you a lot more granular control instead of just fucking guessing. I'd prefer a toaster oven to that but if you just make toast who gives a shit.

Why not just use a pan to toast your bread at this point? I find that gives a better texture as well.
>>
>>109014268
Put a little butter in the pan.
Butter your bread on both sides.
Put the bread on the pan.
Push down on the bread with a spatula.
Flip when the other side is nice and crunchy.

This is the best toasting method ever. Makes a great base for grilled cheese sandwiches as well.

he's right, it's pretty well known typical american bread has more sugar than in other places, along with other preserving additives. i've seen it described by people who've tried it (who aren't american) as being more like cake. i haven't tried american bread myself but i've seen it mentioned a few times by people who have tried it.
i wouldn't leave bread in a toaster overnight, but apparently that'd be ok with american bread

now i'm sure you can get fresh unsweetened bread in america as well, so don't think i'm suggesting otherwise or that you personally eat bread with high-fructose corn syrup in it
>>
>>109015094
What part of Africa are you from? I've never heard anyone describe American bread as cake-like, not remotely. All throughout Europe and Asia there are actual cake-like breads that are quite normal, I take it you've never had a good Kolach, Challah, Korovai, Melonpan, Manchet, Penia, world is full of good food. Get out of your mudhut and learn something about it. That cheap commercial sandwich bread you get from the Red Cross truck or any supermarket in the entire developed world? That's American bread, you've had it.
>>
>>109015516
You know google is just a few keystrokes away? Everyone describes amerishit bread like this. You clearly aren't anywhere near the civilized world given the way you describe white people's bread.
>>
>>109015529
>Everyone describes amerishit bread like this.
No, they don't, comedians and youtubers and children do. Cheap white bread in America is the same as the cheap white bread in Canada, Mexico, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Balkans, the Middle-East, all of it.

Wow, an expert opinion. Warburtons has 3g of sugar per 100g, while in the USA Bimbo has 4g, the excessive stuff like Wonderbread could be as high as 8g, took 30 seconds to Google it. You think that tastes like cake? Cake is 20-50% sugar by mass. Go to bed, Jabari.
>>
>>109015685
the warburtons one is pretty high for britain as well.
the main reason for this discrepancy is that in the US common supermarket bread is made industrially and shipped around, it has to last weeks. in many other places even supermarket bread is made either in-house or locally and you'll be disappointed if it was even a day old. literally, even the cheapest store-brand white bread.
in some places the stuff sold in america would be illegal to sell elsewhere due to sugar content and other ingredients, or at least illegal to sell while calling it "bread"
>>
>>109015685
>AI said so so it must be true
lol
>>
>>109015718
You're describing commercial bread, common throughout all of the developed world. We also get fresh bread in America cooked in our supermarkets.

Clearly representative of American white bread. You know they're famously over-sweetened even by American standards, right? Could've picked out the fat content of Wonderbread but I guess all you can do is desperately google for news articles. So you're going to tell me Subway loaves taste like cake, right? Go ahead, it's fun watching you throw a tantrum but please be careful not to bump the walls of your jhuggi.

Oven thermometers mount in the oven. A leave-in thermometer gets left inserted into food, usually meat, that's the kind you're describing. An instant read is not left in, you poke it in and it gets a good reading within a few seconds. That's what's in that image, an instant-read thermometer than anon mistook for a leave-in thermometer and referred to as an oven thermometer.

OK pajeet. Why are you mad that you are illiterate and retarded though?
>>
>>109016474
He really should've noticed the tiny piece of plastic in his hands as opposed to an actual leave-in thermometer which is thicker, heavier, and has a glass face on it.
>>
>>109016515
Of course. Not arguing otherwise.
But the fact that he made such a mistake goes to show he believed what he had bought to be an oven thermometer.
Tons of people believe what they are told. It is not normal to be a suspicious asshole like me. If chang didn't lie about 95% of the shit he sells maybe China would have a better reputation.

>>

listen dumb ass. if you actually looked up the ingredients in bread that are "poison" you find out they occur normally in other foods naturally and in higher concentration than American bread.

basically they took naturally occurring preservatives isolated them and use them in other foods.

stop repeating bullshit
