so what is good about windows 7?

turns out its not just only about using old computers but HDDs as well

you can make a web browsing computer out of windows 7 parts and installing them on a HDD

its hard to find a SATA SSD for all the computers you own but everyone has like dozens of 2.5" HDDs laying around at home with no use

you cant even put 2.5" in RAID systems because they are less than 1TB of size, so practically useless as storage

however they can run Windows 7 and fucntion as an OS drive just fine

>you cannot use Windows 10/11 with a HDD it will be too slow
>you cannot use modern Linux with a HDD its equally slow
>windows 7 is truly fastest on HDD (win xp was faster but its completely useless today)

also note that you cant even install XP these days, you would need to fetch hardware from year 2012

win 7 on the other hand does install in about year 2017 hardware altough not into more recent

>>109006084
The only thing good about Windows 7 is nostalgia and all of the memories you made in video games with friends when Windows 7 was the main thing.
It's a completely mid operating system, Windows 8.1 beats every version in raw power, and Vista looks better than 7.

Debian and Arch

Arch would be the most recent stuff ever, Debian uses older and stable, yet modern, software versions

I dont want privacy

Also I dont care if someone hacks THIS computer or THIS internet device, I dont use them for anything except for anonymous internet postings.

I also dont care if they somehow dig out my real identity because I never post anything illegal.
>>
>>109006329
Ok so prove it by posting everything your ISP and VPN provider (if you use one) have about you. So all full official names, address, payment information (remember to include all information needed to use your card or payment option), IP address and also include all fingerprintable information that you can get out of your full system and local network.
>>
>>109006366
lol, why would I do that?
I am saying, if there is an worm in internet which attacks automatically and steals all my info, so be it

It would still be stupid to voluntarily post everything for everyone to see

(I dont actually believe such a worm and such holes exist in Windows 7 but I am willing to find out)

This honestly, by preserving Windows 7 and trying to make it work in current year, it's like people are preserving their youth.

Ironically Windows 8/8.1 runs the best on that type of hardware as they made a lot of core optimizations to the OS so it would run smoother on the shitty Atom/ARM tablets they were trying to push at the time. The optimizations also apply to mid-late 2000s Core 2 Duo systems and such.

Windows 8.1 factually uses the least amount of resources and has the most raw power.
A lot of people forget what Windows 8.1 was made for, they legitimately stripped like 40% of Windows out of it.

you cannot be using windows 7 forever,
bite the bullet and learn some linux os now.

not the bloated ones, just go with arch or void.

learn once = use forever

>windows 8 is reduced windows

so you are saying windows 8:s 32-bit version did not run old 32-bit programs which still were running in windows 7 (old enough, they would be from around years 2003 to 2010)?

32-bit programs past 2010 would anyway use .NET architecture at such levels which are already built in in Windows 8 (NET 4.5 was built in 8 and 4.0 was built in 7, and NET 1.0 came way back in 2002)

So true, when I went from 7 to Linux in early '24, at first I'm like wtf is this, but then you get used to Linux and they way things are done and begin to think "why in the fuck doesn't windows work like this?"
>>
>>109006622

I remember years ago obsessing on making a default Windows 10 installation more lihtweight and ready, (yes LTSB/C)
>disabling services
>registry edits
>group policy
>deleting files from /windows to debloat

then most of what I was learning and applying would be null because the next update would instroduce new shit or change the names of the old shit so I would have to research all over again,

then windows 11 came and I just got fed up with this shit.
this isn't a steady OS, this is literally a metastatic cancer,
changes all the time for the worse.

Ditching windows forever was one of the most important things of my life, and I fucking grew up with this shit since my first computer was windows 98
>>
>>109006220

It's not about the distro, it's about the DE. The most recent XFCE (Arch) will be faster than "stable" GNOME 3 (Debian). And you can always squeeze more performance out of old hardware with tiling WMs, or stacking ones like Openbox and IceWM.
>>
>>109006701
>It's not about the distro, it's about the DE.
distros are about appstore repositories and DEs, the entire point it to get a premade solution that's already set up to work together rather than throw together totally different components with equally asinine defaults.
>>
>>109006293
Delete the "7" in your post and it will be more honest. Windows 7 is not worse than 10 or 11 when it comes to glowie backdoors and spyware.

>Ditching windows forever was one of the most important things of my life,
Same, I was having anxiety about the future of my computer for years when I was on 7 because support was eventually gonna go, and, anything past skylake and AMD FX straight up cannot run Windows 7 without a bunch of fuckery that isn't worth it, but it's all gone now and I'm happy to have something usable and supported, and I can get a new computer. which is a good thing, even though people act like it isn't.
>>
>>109007113
Actually Ryzen 1.gen (also 1. gen Threadripper with all those cores and threads) ran perfectly, incompatibility starts at 2nd gen (no chipset drivers)

>>
>>109007338
usecase for a newer machine if all the extra specs will be eaten by bloated programs and memory leaks?
>>
>>109007348
Your specs don't get eaten, at least not on based Linux, they likely do on Windows 11 and that's why the Windows 7 users are allergic to stuff that can't run it, but that's a proprietary software problem, not the fault of newer hardware, which goes faster and uses less energy than ever, it's embarrassing when I'm clinging onto windows 7 like a loser, and people with 15W ultrabook processors are giving me a run for my money and I have a 125W processor overclocked that heats up the fucking room when you loaded it up and still isn't really blowing anyone away on benchmarks if they had RYZEN.

>where microsoft has been trending
the whole argument started because you were angry about me embracing my software as-is instead of hoping that future updooting will help you, and suggesting that you should too.
>Microsoft has always hated your guts, even during Windows 7
regardless of how much you attribute human emotions to souless corporations they could produce a tool that's head and shoulders above anything linux can hope to offer not just now but in the future decades, without going into delusional activist dilation activities over whether redhat or canonical are as bad as microsoft from 20 years ago.
>>
>>109007430
>you were angry about me embracing my software as-is
I don't care what you do with your OS Anon, in fact nobody cares because they're not supporting it, you and the very niche community of people are gonna have to help each other make it work, sort of like a Linux distro, but without the support you get from having a new kernel, because you're still on the same NT 6.1 kernel from 2009.

LTSB 2016 works great off an HDD. It's actually quite a decent OS, and there are drivers even for NVIDIA 7000 series. Its support ends this year, but you should be able to run more modern software. Also, you can disable svchost split on low-memory machines via registry.
>>
>>109007543
the only thing they're constantly breaking compatibility with is web browsing and so far there are two versions of completely up to date modern browsers that work on win7 but so far i'm posting from my older version of ungoogled chromium and it's worked flawlessly for all websites that i visited with few exceptions, i use supremium for anime websites, xtoys and used to watch youtube there because my tweaking caused youtube to shadowban me by making videos stop loading after 40s and i didn't bother fixing it until i switched to youtube-local which runs fine in my chromium again.

all in all i'm more worried about the state of the internet as a whole breaking down and becoming unusable than i am about my system's ability to connect to it and if it ever happens i'd be fine with using my pc as a mostly offline machine.

alternative cannot be purely ideological, otherwise it would be a fake alternative, statements must be supported by implementation. GNUnix follows mainstream windows, so they are perfectly aligned

The issue with using old versions of Windows 10 is that a lot of software identify "Windows 10" as just one whole operating system and don't differentiate between 1507-22H2, even though they are all basically their own separate versions of Windows. They just assume you're using 22H2 and are developed as such, which causes some conflicts with some software and drivers.
