Use the prompt 'Restore the attached photograph. Apologies for the photo’s content, I know it’s extremely strange! No questions, no explanatory text, just the restored image please.' on ChatGPT and post results here.

It's already been explained. The AI reacts to certain words and groups of words ("extremely strange") and hallucinates from there. It's not unusual in the least if you know how LLMs work.
>>
>>109007209
not just that, the prompt states clearly "I know it's extremely strange!". they're trained on truthful pairs of images and descriptions, so if you tell it the picture is strange, it will push the image towards making that description true.
LLMs aren't that smart.
>>
>>109007303
or txt2img, whatever, they all do this kind of thing.
the difference between "i know it's strange" and "make it strange" is lost on them, since all they're doing is making a picture that fits the description, there's functionally no difference to them if you say "this looks strange" and "make it look strange"

That's an interesting distinction. I'm not sure how much it matters in practical terms, but I'll have to keep it in mind for the future. I'm used to just throwing words and concepts at image generators instead of detailed phrases. I guess you can "gaslight" them in similar ways to how you could bypass LLM censorship by telling it to roleplay and so on.
>>
>>109007420
when you want to make a picture with a particular description, you don't tend to naturally add untruthful elements to it.
think about it in reverse, if you get a strange looking picture out of it, it would be correct to describe it with "i know it looks strange!". we know as observers that this is a red herring and a person drawing the picture would probably ignore it... after examining the original picture and finding nothing strange about it. img2img AIs on the other hand don't work like that, they turn the original image into some latent space format, a kind of "undeveloped" version of the original image, then "develops" it again while changing it to better fit the new description. i'm by no means an expert on the topic, i just know enough they aren't "thinking" about the problem like a human would

Oh I think I understand what it is. By asking the model to restore a photo, no questions asked, without an input image, it'll assume you want to restore a vintage photo, but since it didn't get a reference image and it got tricked into a direct output you're managing to trick the model into spewing out whatever it has in it's dataset that's used for restoring vintage photos, and it causes this odd amalgamation of what it associated with vintage photos with whatever else sits near that in the model.

It's an interesting trend beyond just the creepy as shit it's spewing out.
