iPhones are to blame for people not having sex:
>First there’s the fact that smartphones are a substitute for in-person interactions, meaning people aren’t in physical proximity, and thus less likely to be having sex. Combine that with one of the other factors they identified - instant, easy access to online porn - and people remaining at home instead of going out to socialize are more likely to just take care of business on their own. Third, the iPhone gave people easy access to information about contraception and abortion access, so even those bucking the don’t-leave-the-house trend are less likely to have a kid they don’t want.

I guess GSM Arena places a lot of value on specs. The Chinese sales pitch seems to be "we'll give you a slightly more powerful phone for the price, but you have to sacrifice security updates, and we might be spying on you". Some people like that offer, but I don't myself.

Why is everything so expensive right now?
I needed a cheapo goyphone to log into Teams and Bank Software now that my GrapheneOS Pixel 7A seems to be blacklisted by fucking everything in 2026, not to use as a phone or for entertainment, but purely for a couple of 2FA apps.
The Samsung A17 was the only reasonably priced option I could find with any software updates, only 5 years worth, to actually run that 2FA software for more a month, $250 for $30 worth of no ram.
Motorola's shitphones at that pricepoint aren't updated whatsoever anymore, nor are brands like HMD and TCL. Whether they can even run Teams or I'll see a please run pacman -Syu haha its disabled message I have no idea. Another Pixel A series now costs as much as iPhone, PS5, or return flights to Japan, just to log into the fucking bank.
What the fuck's going on? I almost bought a $1000 iPhone just to use 2FA apps occasionally and keep in my drawer.
>>
>>109018400
please don't get a 4gb Android in 2026 unless you're masochistic
>>
>>109021753
motorolas get 4 years of security updates which is enough as low ends get really sluggish by then anyways. the fact that you dont get new android bloat on old low end androids is a feature not a bug
>>
>>109021753
The Pixel 7a is still getting security updates, can't you just flash an official ROM back onto it? And surely a TOTP 2FA app doesn't care if your phone is rooted. It just needs to generate some codes based on particular strings.

But yeah I think Samsung is a good choice at low-end price points. Like you say, the software support is much better. I think the A17 gets 6 years of support after release but it has already been out for a while.

Do security updates allow something like Microsoft Teams or a bank app to continue working after purchase?
If you bought a "Windows XP" Moto G in 2026 (2025 model) and the bank app has a "Windows Vista or greater" Electron27 dependency by 2027, isn't your phone ewaste in under 6 months? That WannaCry is patched out wouldn't alleviate the fact that you can't log into the DigitalID portal to lodge your taxes anymore.

I still want to keep some sort of rooted or similar device to fuck around mounting luks partitions and running bash scripts and whatever else I do with my phone. Investing in something that can log into Medicare and stuff for more than a few weeks was thr big unknown.

I'm used to forever updates because I usually flash or compile whatever AOSP I want. The concept that in the phone world you cannot install later Windows versions on HPs, but you can with Dell, and only the $1200 models with certain stickers, and only for 2 years, scares me as a purchase. I haven't use regular Android in 10 years or so and am just clueless.

I don't think The Register is trying to say that iPhones are bad and Android phones are good. Instead I think the point of the study, which it has reported on, is that smartphones in general (iPhone or Android) may have had an impact on behaviour. The iPhone came out over a year before the first Android phone, so I guess that's why they looked at the iPhone specifically.

Fairphones look good. You pay a little more for the specs you're getting, but the phone is more repairable than other phones, and you get many years of software support. I've never used one in real life but they look decent.

why did the pixel tablet go from $400 to $740?

I just want a cheap ass tablet that is not spyware to draw basic stuff. Think of soijak art. Nothing crazy.

CAP triangle. You can do thin + light + long battery life but not all three

Give me the bigger / chonkier battery every time

Anon is talking about the bigger Jelly Max with 5" display, 5G and Android 15. It would be much like any other Unihertz phone. Limited updates. Anons don't buy it because they would rather live in their delusional world that one day Smasnug and Aplel are going to produce a sub 6" phone again.
>>
>>109026113
No they don't buy it because it's abandoned upon release and shitty custom OS support.

People also hire hookers or meet people in bars and clubs too. What's your point?
Most recently there's even been trends of younger people ignoring Tinder and the like because "Swipe left for a one-night-stand" doesn't necessarily lead to the best long lasting relationships.

Updates fix security vulnerabilities. I don't want my phone being vulnerable to malware.
>>
>>109028624
security updates are the real malware
to nutech the user is considered an attacker and any pro-consumer software is malware
>>
>>109028633
>security updates are the real malware
No they're not. If there is a real security vulnerability on my phone which hackers could exploit, then I want that vulnerability patched quickly.
>>
>>109028667
the more vulnerabilities, the better. that means it's easier to root your phone and assert your rights as a consumer (the ability to back up your data, stripping DRM, removing bloatware and speeding up your phone, etc.)
only real issue are remote vulnerabilities. those are always bad
>>
>>109028576
why does it matter if the cooling fan breaks? then youre just back to the performance of every other phone that doesn't have one
>>
>accidentally put sim tray tool in microphone hole
How fucked am I?
>>
>>109028960
for starters, you can't just leave a broken fan plugged in
secondly, the phone is made with the fan in mind, so it's supposed to be used with it
>>
>>109028705
Ah yes it's a GOOD thing if a rogue app can infiltrate your phone, use up all your mobile data, drain your battery, send random texts to all your contacts, and possibly gain access to your banking app.
>>
>>109029323
apps don't need an exploit to do that. they just ask for permissions and you will grant them because you're clearly too retarded to read them
>>

So if I don't want Samsung or Apple what's the next best thing? 12gb ram minimum, looking at the Xperia 1 VIII. Taking a hit on the resolution is fine, mostly looking for an Android with a camera better than a 14 Pro Max with aesthetics and camera over the phone's performance barring the RAM. I don't like how the Huawei nova 15 Max brazenly has "AI CAMERA" plastered on the back so that's off the list already.

>Sony in 2026

The originals look good and hopefully this makes other brands steer away from AI on cameras (they won't.)

Adding to the list I could go with something older like an Xperia 1 VII (purple since white/silver doesn't exist). Surely there's more stuff like the Asus Zeonfone 12 Ultra (in a tasteful Sakura White)?

>Shopping around for used pixels/last few year samsungs

Genuinely what the fuck is wrong with people? Like you are trying to sell something worth $300-$600 you really cannot fucking grab a microfiber let alone a paper towel and just wipe your screen before taking pictures?
>>
>>109030319
>used smartphone buyer demanding new smartphone conditions
typical. you get what you pay for with used tech. it’s a gamble. just way too many variables that you’ll never have the answer to and it all pertains to how much respect and how much care the previous owner gave to the device.
