honestly about time we change the connection.
also why the hell we still used dimms in pairs?
almost noone used them unpaired
i know how ddr works, but there was no reason to do that way for so long
>>
I hope it will be an option soon.
>>
i like it, i guess its a natural progression of RAM but i wonder how it will work on micro-ATX motherboards since their footprint is larger, i hope its also not possible to damage the ram sticks simply by screwing it down too hard

I hope it gets adopted. Chances are the industry will adopt it either way as we're getting closer to DDR6 and even now the classic DIMM has traces too long for DDR5 speeds. It'll also mean that with CAMM2, LPCAMM2 will get wider adoption, and with it we should finally see slim laptop platforms with expandable RAM. The big reason why we have soldered RAM on modern laptops, besides corporate greed, is a) DIMM modules are taking up the larger bulk of the chassis, b) it's more power hungry and c) the modern DDR5 platforms from Intel and AMD enforce soldered DDR5 RAM due to the power draw and trace length issues. LPCAMM2 should fix that and we should see modular RAM in thin 13" laptops. But first we need the RAM module situation to stabilize, but I'm still glad we saw some CAMM products at Computex, the industry isn't sleeping on it and slowly pushing it closer to mass availability.

Faster RAM is better and it is still modular.

As long as this shit is user replaceable and not soldered into whatever it's installed in, I'm game.
>>
would shit like amd 395 strix halo benefit from this? or does those would still need to be soldered

I know for a fact that people will initially refuse to accept it because for the first time since the 80's we're gonna have a completely different form for the RAM module, but here's why that's a really stupid stigma.
Have we started fires whenever Intel or AMD would switch sockets? No, they're all their proprietary standards and we just accepted that our motherboards and CPU's would end up obsolete.
Have we started fires whenever a new DDR generation required a completely new motherboard and DIMM modules that weren't backwards compatible? No, we just accepted that fact and not that long ago we had the same turnover from DDR4 to DDR5 and no one complained.

CAMM will be standardized and used by all vendors as every industry benefits from it. The datacenter segment will love it, faster RAM, lower power draw, exactly what they want for their operation scaling, and then it'll naturally trickle down to the consumer market.

I, for one, welcome our new CAMM overlords.

It's very likely that if AMD wanted, they could adopt those to LPCAMM2. Shorter traces and lower power draw is why they chose soldered over DIMM, and CAMM would be the best of both worlds. It's just that we'll have to wait before we see it become a widespread standard.

What's stopping SOCAMM2 being used for laptops and desktops over LPCAMM2 as well as servers, apart from money to be made from market segmentation? Production cost? Power draw?
>>
>>109017058
I will start to think about it only if it becomes available for desktop at moderate prices.
>>
>>109018062
Why would they refuse 128-256gb ram in a single slot?
>>
>>109017058
it's not soldered and i can replace myself
signal characteristics might not be as good as the soldered ones, but it's them problem not me
i dont design memory controller nor dram
>>
>>109019082
It's like the nvme of ram
>>
>>109018062
LPCAMM2 for desktops is probably inevitable. At least I hope so. SOCAMM2 is thinner, so it will probably remain the standard for laptops. Maybe for "mobile workstation" laptops which are expected to be slightly thicker anyway we might see LPCAMM2 occasionally?
>>
>>109017058
the people online who say they like the idea of having one stick of ram for all channels are just industry shills, probably working for apple to make windows laptops even worse for us

oy vey, how dare you buy one 16gb stick now, and then another later when its cheaper. you will buy more expensive cost inflated 64gb giga module
>>
>>109020478
its literally a useless standard for desktop platforms, theres a reason why servers dont use this shit
>>
>>109020479
My x260 has only one slot already and I just want to max it out.

It would be cool if only Sam Altman didn't buy pure wafer just to fulfil WEF agenda.
At least I bought T14 Gen 5 last year at a discount.
