Is having a printer in your home archaic?
>>
idk
>>
>>109021890
I cant name a better way of making notes or putting images on paper, so no.
>>
>>109021890
I fucking hate printers

I really like printing stuff don't get me wrong

But buying overpriced ink and then realizing for some reason your printer just doesn't work anymore because of some fucked up planned obsolescence stuff makes owning a printer just complete hell

I wish I could get a printer that would just work forever
>>
>>109021890
I only have a printer because I need to print off pdfs as i find it easier to read research papers that way (with physical highlighter, and margins to write notes in)
>>109022782
>ink
get the cheapest brother that takes toner. Block it from connecting to the internet, and never look back. seriously it just works
>>
>>109022782
laser printer
>>
>>109021890
What, you want me to leave my house to print stuff? Hell no.
>>
>>109021890
>*jams*
>*stops feeding paper*
yeah just open it up and look at the rubber
oh it doesn't look damaged? how do I know the rubber's bad? I can't see it rolling when the printer's operating so what the fuck am I supposed to do now?
>buy a maintenance kit on aliexpress (if you're lucky it exists)
now it works but I have learned nothing. and the next printer will be even worse to service
how do you even service printers man?
>>
>>109022802
>>109022811
will do boss
>>
>>109021890
>>
>>109021890
Depends on your usecase. Going full digital can be the best strategy for many hobbies/professions/workflows, but certainly not for all.
>>
>>109022927
id rather buy a plotter at this point
>>
>>109021890
You can buy a brother laser printer at a thrift store or estate sale for about $10 and it will work forever
>>
>>109021890
brother printers at home are goated, I have one
>>
They're shit tech (yes, even lasers, just less so) but sometimes you just have to print something and running to a print store is too embarrassing. So yes you need a printer at home.
>>
I print at a library
this way I dont own a shitty printer with expensive ink
>>
>>109022927
qrd?
>>
>>109022811
Only issue with laser printers is power draw. Ideally, you'd have one on its own circuit. I couldn't plug mine in near my network equipment because it would trip my UPS every time it spooled up.
>>
>>109023177
>Print store
Why not a library? Or if you live near a campus you could go there.
>>
More than half the time I just use mine as a copy machine. It's one of those Brother 3-in-1 combo units. Print, scan, fax... though I've never sent a fax.

It has some cool features. When you scan something, it can do both sides, no physical flip necessary.
It also has an auto document feeder, so you put a stack of source documents in a tray, and it will do one page after the other. And the end result is dead straight, it has some kind of builtin deskew function.
>>
>>109021890
Until we get communal printing at convenience stores like Japan, there's no other way, and we're NEVER getting communal printing because niggers would absolutely trash the printers.
>>
>>109022911
if you're using CUPS, especially on lunix, you might have a bad time, in particular also if you plan on ever using the scanner
things might have changed ymmw but I wouldn't count on it
>>
the printer in my home still has a fax function
so maybe
>>
>>109021890
I have an old brother with landscape A4 tray / A3 passthrough feeder that's actually smaller footprint than most A4-only AIOs from other manufacturers.
I do print A3 schematics / templates once in a while so it was worth it.
>planned obsolescence
Yea there's ink absorber thing that got full after ~8 years and was a bitch to clean/replace, had to disassemble the whole thing and reset counters in service menu.
>>
Its funny because people always complain about locked down printers, but I guess we lucked out with our Epson because we cram that bitch full of Ebay third party ink and it just keeps chugging.
>>
>>109022782
behold my HP Deskjet F2280
for some reason unknown to me this shitty consumer HP printer/scanner keeps running with no issues since 2006. chink ink cartridges cost next to nothing. I hope it works for another 20 years because I wouldn't know what to replace with. well spent 40 bucks.
>>
>>109022782
me and my wife have had the same basic ass b&w Samsung laser printer for 16-18 years now. It gets used to rarely that i just keep it in the closet and the bust it out 2-3 times a year when i need it. It just works and you can still buy generic cheap toner cartridges. They really don't make em like they used to in this case.
>>
>>109021890
No, it's very modern.
Archaic peoples did not have printers. And their homes were more "hovel".
>>
>>109023195
I did this for a year regularly for various 20+ page forms that needed filling/amending, it got pretty expensive.
>>
>>109026105
they should invent a way to handle text documents online one of these days
>>
>>109022782
I got a basic monochrome Brother laser printer about 15 years ago and it still works well. I buy cheap toner cartridges and they last a long time. I still generally hate printers though m
>>
>>109023758
CUPS is great software and my experience printing on linux is in direct contrast to my experience printing on windows
>>
A printing press is archaic.
>>
My wife insists of having a printer at home for her wfh job even though I've told her I'll just take a usb to work and print it there for her
>>
No. Printed documents are useful in many cases.
Printers as a whole are shit, but I'm talking in a statistical sense; the majority of printers (You) could buy are going to be cloggy, expensive shit. If you make an informed decision you can have a printer that does its job without headache. Servicing is mostly retard-proof as long as you buy the right units.
Speaking of, if all you need is a printer you buy a B&W Brother laser printer and that's that. I have an L2350-DW I bought for $90 which does one thing: prints A4 pages in black and white. Toner cartidges can be had off of ebay for $15 and I got a drum repacement for like $30 sitting in my closet for when it does need swapping (nowhere near that yet).

Brother make colour laser printers that are almost as fucky-free like OP pic. I'll probably buy one of those and donate the mono printer if I ever think I need colour.
Their multifunction printers that come with a scanner seem like a good idea in general, but you can also just buy standalone scanners.
If you're printing photos you'll need actual ink which is a bigger fuck around (not to mention you'll need to fuck with photo paper and your own ineptitude with /p/-tier photography) but now that eco tanks exist I'd generally recommend one of those despite not having one myself.

On the other hand A3 and larger printers are genuine hell. I was looking for an A2 printer and prices surge quickly, and support and parts are much harder to get unless you're in an enterprise environment. There's big box stores in my area everywhere that'll print large (and small) for pennies with the only real inconvenience that you need to place and order and go pick it up. I recommend just doing that if you're not frequently pumping out large volumes of colour A3.

This is the correct choice and sentiment in a concise statement.

>overpriced ink
Ink cartridges are a fucking scam, ink tank printers take ink from bottles that are MASSIVELY cheaper.
>>
>>109021890
>>109022782
I'm never buying a printer because the NSA orders/pays every printer manufacturer to put tracking dot code in the hardware and software.
>>
>>109027626
>Ink cartridges are a fucking scam, ink tank printers take ink from bottles that are MASSIVELY cheaper.
only good if you print all colours non stop, because once they gunk up, its money down the drain
>>109027650
even laser?? i dont see any black dots
>>
>Own a printer
>Only need to print once every blue moon
>It's always something really important when you ACTUALLY need to print
>Ink dries out so you have to replace it
>Print my one stupid page
>Let the printer sit for another 8 months before I need to print a page again
>Ink dries out AGAIN

Can't we make a ink cartridges that somehow doesn't dry out. I print maybe 5-10 pages in a year

>planned obsolescence stuff
Have you tried not buying cloudshit? Have you tried using this thing called a USB cable or wifi direct?
>>
>>109027650
>pay a homeless person to buy you a printer with cash
>never connect that printer to the internet
>never register that printer
>print whatever the fuck you want
>keep it hidden somewhere
>buy another printer and keep that in your house on the open
Even if the feds raid your home after you keep sending death threats to the president they'll just take your decoy printer that won't match the tracking dots in your real printer.
>>
>>109021890
I need to print something once in maybe 3 years so I’ll just pay whatever it costs at the library.
>>
>>109028352
Just go to the library and use theirs. I had to print two pages once and they wanted to charge me 50 eurocents per page but when I said I only needed two pages they let me do it for free.
>>
>>109021890
It gives me ick if I see one in a man's home. Like if a woman owns a printer she's probably just printing photos, but G_d knows what a man is up to you....
>>
>>109021890
It is fine if you're the kind of person to own all sorts of tech and enjoy using it, tweaking it etc.
For common people? It's a jewish scam. And I'm not even being antisemitic here, it is objectively true. Most people who own these things, they never use it much. If they were to pay for some service to print their stuff, they'd save a lot of money. Instead they opted for owning a funny box that requires spending time on figuring out how to use it, maintenance because of liquids and moving parts etc. Should I mention the ink cartridges? I guess not, like I said, let's cool it with the antisemitism here, this is a tech board after all.
So what if ink in those cartridges is more expensive than human blood used in medicine for transfusions? You don't like it? Don't buy it.
Do not buy a home printer. Problem solved.
>>109023949
Same. I had one like that. About as old as yours. Left it in my uni student campus, so next people who were to live there would have it and save some money on printing shit. Although paper is probably not used as much anymore, but I wonder if it still works.
Now own Epson and it is a nuisance, even with chink mods.
Also do not forget that according to Epson and HP we both should be in prison tortured and atoning for crimez every single day. Our crime being:
not falling for the scam.
>>
Any recommendations for cheap, simple standalone scanners that work with loonix?
I think I need that more than a printer
>>
I'm surprised we don't have a successor to the printer yet. If you don't use your printer often, every use becomes a struggle. It doesn't work.
So yes.
>>
>>109029160
Not hard to build one, but printhead tech is patented afaik. So are paper feed systems and such. The only expensive and complicated part of ink printers is manufacturing and calibrating print heads.
>>
>>109029148
Canon IXI400(spelling?)
My sister has one at her place instead of a Multifunction printer and it just werks. My arch laptop just werked with it.
>>
>>109021890
I have one because it's a family printer, but I haven't printed anything in 15 years or more. If I needed to print something, I could always go to my local library or community college and print everything for free.
>>
Are matrix printers also a scam?
>>
what 3d printer should i buy
>>
>>109022782
The ink racket is fucking insane. I remember a time when you could get a decent basic printer for $50 or less so with a complete set of ink (all colors) which is like wow good price but then they would rob you blind on the ink refills. But the thing was that if you bought just a full set of ink it would actually cost MORE than 50 bucks so the cheapest option was buying a new printer every time you run out of ink which was insane. However the ink jew noticed this and instead of lowering the price of ink refills to make them more appealing than a new printer they made it so new printers only come with a partially filled cartridges that run out soon.

I got 5 years of warranty on that thing and the shop is close enough for me to go bother them if shit goes wrong, so it's going to run, simple.
And it doesn't seem to try to forcibly update itself, but I wasn't paying attention recently.

Man, I was considering printing some political leaflets, but getting a visit from cops due to that would suck.
As far I know, yellow dye is used, so maybe some sort of yellow noise overlay?

do you keep it plugged in when not in use? it should clean itself if powered from time to time

Canon printers will let you keep printing even after ink is finished and refilling the cartridges is a matter of popping the top open with a screwdriver and pouring ink in
