wayland has made all niche alternatives like xfce, lxqt, budgie, etc completely dead and worthless
kde is receiving all of the attention and development with valve now on board
gnome will soon become niche and unused
linux is becoming more unified than ever and thats a good thing

Gnome is seemingly much better for OLED displays and it’s hard to imagine another configuration of desktop GUI with more static elements on screen being better even on Micro LED displays when they launch or other display technology that doesn’t care.
Even in Windows I am not sure why your desktop wouldn’t be just the wallpaper, maybe not #000000 black, with taskbar on auto hide and translucentTB installed using super to launch software or custom shortcuts.
I’ve used Linux since probably 2005 or so in that area and the old interfaces like gnome 2 which is today mate and xfce were usable but it’s hard to see them as anything but wasted screen real estate on most displays. Similar to horizontal browser tabs always displayed, rarely optimal.
I have not had any issues with Wayland though I think there may be some issues with vsync and latency iirc and whatever the compositor is called now on gnome 3 Wayland is locked down. Unclear if this is a result of Wayland or not but it does not support something like Beryl or Compiz outside of a garbage extension ecosystem. Still has my wobbly windows though so
Thinking on long time horizons is a good sign but I don’t see a regression in desktop interface on Linux absent societal collapse coming, it’s literally the year of the Linux desktop.

but gnome still has that useless big black top bar

bspwm still works fine tho, weird thread op

same bro, xfce is just comfy
>>
>>109024596
It does it’s not flawless and that’s how mine is configured or was as of last week, for me that generally means a couple of static elements there(clock which I definitely need to turn off) but the bar is black. Possible to hide it without having to modify the source?
Have been effectively held in a degraded state as far as my ability to interact with my machine for a few years now as some title 50 nerds have me training algorithms for them with my fucking brain, an Air Force radar, and some backscatter analysis.

>>109024366
alright, alright, I'll give wayland a try in 2030, is that okay?
>>
>>109024366
Alternatives can add wayland support or people can just use x11 desktops if they like, they function fine.

I don't give a shit, i WILL keep using x11 (though xlibre) and i WILL keep using xfce4. If in the (remote because xfce development is fuck slow) future xfce4 will drop x11 i will simply move to TDE, SonicDE, GNUStep, E17, Lumina, etc... or just whip a WM (like icewm) paired with a powerful file manager (like xfe) and still be happy on x11.

So, i'm just not going to use wayland, ha ha, sorry no.

I just want a DE that keeps the UX consistent between major releases, you're free to enjoy being at the whims of schizophrenic devs changing and breaking stuff every day ending in y.
>>
>>109024366
XLibre is in the process of being packaged for Debian thankfully, there's already an apt repo that I've been testing on Devuan with no problems.
>>
>>109028489
>Source: it was revealed to me in a dream
Evidence? There is neither an ITP nor an RFP filed for XLibre.
>>
>>109028540
My bad, there's only an unofficial repo atp: https://github.com/xlibre-deb/debian
I was mistaken about the Debian packaging, just found some discussion of someone trying to get them banned and someone else defending the freedom of current and future Debian packagers to pull it into the distro, on a basis of the DFSG points 3&4.
Idk what the packaging would involve, I may have a look at it later.

XFCE still works for me

I'm sorry to hear about your brain injury.

All the features of those niche desktops should be merged into KDE so we have a unified standard. In b4 that stupid comic.
>>
I, too, am using Xfce. Also fuck Wayland, like seriously. After it started getting forced on my distro, I finally came to understand why everyone hates it so much. So much lag, so much fucking bugs. I used to have a perfectly stable system. I hope XLibre actually gets some wide adoption. Fuck these corpos trying to kill of X11 and making Linux worse across the board.
>>
i still use openbox with tint2 and have "-wayland" in my make.conf

Wayland saved BSPWM's tree model from dying and gave us shit like MangoWM and Niri, not that bad all things considered. Labwc's ecosystem is also nicer than Openbox.

entirely GNOME's own doing
