since this is TECH WORKERS GENERAL I'll try and flesh this out, wagie-wise:

When I started working at this current faggy company, like 5 years ago, I had a Win10 laptop.
A lot of random shit just did not work well, WSL2 and spyware VPN and spyware MitM Proxy bullshit were all separate, the VPN "miniport" would break wsl2 networking as well, zscaler internally had its own proxy configs and would direct everything via a PAC file from 127.0.0.1.
On top of that, when using a KVM switch or literally any docking station, all my carefully placed windows would scatter into the 4 winds and never come back as I had them on different monitor geometries.
On Win11, literally all of this stopped being a problem.
WSL2 now shares the host network stack so I can connect through the same proxy/vpn bullshit and Windows 11 now remembers where my fucking windows were placed.

I don't give a SINGLE OUNCE OF FUCK about anything else.

Do not do it.
I moved from a city to borderline flyover country in 2019 and it was the worst move of my life. Wasn't in tech at the time and bouncing between loser jobs, but eventually decided to take my career seriously again. There's basically nowhere to work here without a hellish hour+ commute towards Boston.
Smalltown life also sucks. Will be different if it's your hometown and you know people, but going from a city to cliquey small town shit is hell socially unless you're moving there with a wife/family.

the unironically most motivating moments at work have been when we're doing something that's not usual IT and i have to be told that I can't be a one-trick pony about just being a millennial who knows how to use a computer, and that relays and hydraulics and shit still exist. if anything, working where I do has made me a better person -- i now have impetus to at least try to understand the physical world and all the software is old enough that i can unironically read crash dumps and isolate shit to "hardware power issue" or "hardware memory issue" or "pci lane fell out" or "SWEs have edged us closer to hell yet again"

You obviously live somewhere with a low cost of living.

$15/hr = $31,200/yr gross.
average state and federal withholding: $4,000-$5,800/year. So we'll say $4,900, right in the middle. So now you're down to $26,300

Rent: Average rent in the USA is between $1,644 and $2,003 monthly. so again we'll aim for the middle and say about $1,800/month. Well gee... that's $21,600/year! That leaves $4,400/year. (that's $366.66/month)

What can we do with that? Not a whole lot. You can't own a car, because just gas, insurance, and maintenance will cost so much that you won't have anywhere near enough for utilities, phone, or food. Average utility cost for a 1-bedroom apartment in the USA is $150-$250/month without internet, $200-$350 with it. So again, let's aim for the middle and say $200. Now you have $166 left for the month. Hope you like ramen and public transportation. Because you can't afford shit else.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask to talk about my circumstances since I wouldn't consider myself a techworker in the strict sense. I work in reporting and make standardized data sets of pre-clinical pharmaceutical experiments. Most all of my work is done in excel; no sql, no power bi or tableau. i am however allowed to and have used visual basic to make small tools to help with common tasks and, recently with the introduction of python in excel, have used python to streamline some tasks that could potentially take an entire day to do. can i put this stuff on my resume? would it even help me? how much can i embellish it on my resume? has anyone else been in a similar situation and successfully made it into IT? i suppose my goal is to be a developer or work in the data side of the house. i also have github projects and did an apprenticeship with someone employed as a data scientist/mle, but after years of applying to programming/engineering roles I'm convinced those don't actually help that much. also i think i know sql (at least dml) and the data oriented python libraries to hack it through an interview, if only i could get a chance...

It depends on how good you are at lying. If you're an expert grifter than just use AI and bullshit your way through whenever anyone asks to explain things. Otherwise write something like an IRC client—first without error handling; then add error handling. You'll learn what you need. AI is an excellent teacher in this regard.

So I just accepted an offer from a different company that gets me a 20% raise, almost a lateral move, was from a referral too. Thing is, I've been working on the same small startup for 6 years and this shit hasn't gone anywhere in that time, last year they had to lay off 60% of the company in order to get even and profit is only happening now because a few other people left on their own after that. The saving grace of this shit was work getting more challenging and they let me and another guy I really liked to work together with do whatever we want, so I feel bad for him but business is business.

Man, I have to stop buying shit because of work stress. Everytime my brain goes "fuck it" I end up spending like crazy and when I do the week's budget I end up spending like 1k in stupid shit (this time I bought an action camera for a surfboarding trip I'm doing with my friends next month). Fuck just last month I caught myself spending $500 in a gacha only for me to go what the fuck am I doing? Any tips? I'm doing more going out but going out makes me go out eat out more and it's like FUCK HOW'D WE END UP AT KBBQ AGAIN
>>
>>109046150
like god damn it I got a promotion but the additional work stress is making me do way more stupid purchases because my brain just goes "fuck this if I'm gonna die from a heart attack young might as well pop off all the good shit". Not really in debt yet but if it isn't because of my stocks fluctuating, I estimate I'm losing around $500-1k of my savings every month. Usually gained a little back because of stocks but it still hurts when the market does bad....
>>
>>109046150
But why digital stuff?? Do you stress over work or do you feel cornered in your current situation? I think you need to revaluate your long term goals if the job sucks this much. My last job did so i worked on certs then bounced for better pay within the year.

>>109046293
I mean I've read it but maybe I should give it a re-read. self help books help for a little bit then it just feels like additional overhead where my brain goes "oh come on why do I have to keep track of a million things when ceo big bucks just has to think about stroking his dick once to his stakeholders and then go home to get his dick sucked"

He still managed to raise and I'm still struggling after doing it for a year. His startup is a grift as you pointed out, while mine is real and has a huge potential market as shown by my early traction.
And I'm 3x his age...
But the part I'm more annoyed at is this stupid bitch who is supposedly a VC analyst or something of the sort saying 'hurr durr just do it he got money so can you', clearly that's not how it works.

Catching up on WWDC this weekend and it's nuts just how hard Apple is pushing Swift. idk if it will work but they're making packages and libraries and features to allow Swift integration into literally every single type of app. There's native interop between Swift and C, C++, Java, Kotlin, and JS now.
They also have support for embedded shit so you can develop firmware https://www.swift.org/get-started/embedded/

How about we let the Japanese (who effectively invented and maintain dominance over anime) dictate what stories and themes go out to consumers, and therefore, give a Japanese man control of the company?

arguably we got already got "ubi" after the industrial revolution. 90% of the population was employed in agriculture, then shuffled off to work in shitty factories using much of the same leverage that is used to make people work shit jobs today. in the end the people won since they organized against the rich. kinda the same thing after the gilded age: people were going to turn to communism and real action before the owner class relented again

i don't think ubi can truly work. a society where half the people work and the other half are on neetbux is going to be extremely dysfunctional and filled with resentment. regardless of how you try to patch things up with free money, the people with actual useful jobs will hold all the social and political power. the reason why our current system works is because you can't truly say which people are useless and which aren't, since most everyone is working and "earning" a living. if we ever get ubi, like on top of mass unemployment, it'll be because of incompetence and corruption.
>>
>>109058219
i didnt really explain it correctly but i think like the concept of "bullshit" jobs, since that's basically half the jobs after the industrial revolution, is the sane version to implement UBI. the massive labor force chimp outs that created new jobs during the industrialization period is a distinctly western phenomenon. without them, europe and the US would be basically like india is now: 50-70% unemployment, a few rich people own everything, plenty of food and clothes but thoroughly stagnant economy
