I had the usb-c connector on my xbox controller go loose and only connect from an extreme angle, but granted that was not from repeated re-plugging, but by being plugged in 100% of the time and being held at an angle while I played. The socket eventually got bent out of shape from the weight of the cable.

And it's next to impossible to replace it even if you have the tools since it's so fucking small. I managed to fix it once but on the second attempt it refused to work, I had to get a whole replacement PCB from aliexpress.

I miss the OG Xbox and the X360 which had hard cables molded in, with a breakaway dongle at the end only.

What are you doing, grabbing the cable and whipping your phone around by it? I don't abuse my USB ports and every one of them has lasted past when the rest of the phone was hopelessly obsolete, maybe 5-7 years. The only problem I've had is cables no longer clicking into the port and falling out easily, but that was easily fixed by picking the compacted pocket fluff out of the bottom of the port with a needle.

If they had decided to standardise a barrel jack or any other purpose built DC connector for that matter, the problem could have been resolved.

USB chargers are already much more complex than the dumb dc power supplies, if they chose to standardise a charger connector it wouldn't be any kind of magic trick to include electronics to negotiate charging voltage and current via the same dc connector. Although that wouldn't be necessary either if they just chose a set of specs with different size plugs for different types of devices.

I have no problem with usb-c itself, I just don't think using it as universal charging port is a good idea.

The issue with laptops is that you're using them with the charger plugged in all the time. At the desk, on the sofa, in the bed. And this wouldn't be an issue if they actually put a decent battery in these pieces of junk. The stinkbad battery lasted maybe 3 hours idle, cut to less than half if you actually tried to do any work. HP is only slightly better, maybe 4 hours idle, 2 hours tops when working. So there's really no other options but to constantly be plugging/unplugging or keep the cable attached even if you aren't at the desk where the laptop can be kept perfectly still.

It's not the plug cycles that wear out the plug, it's the cable weight eventually loosing the plug that not all data pins work. My Xbox controller eventually only worked if the cable was plugged in from a certain angle only, and after a while it could get nothing but power from the cable (which has multiple pins and the shielding as ground, so less likely to go bad) and had to use cable for power and bluetooth for data connection.

This is only a problem for carryable devices that you use when plugged in. For a laptop the cable always sits on the desk so it is not an issue. For a phone you... have it sitting on the desk when charging, so also not an issue, assuming you use it while charging it still has the cable plug on the bottom so there's less weight and it lasts longer.
For the xbox controller the plug was upwards at a 45 degree angle, so it always had the cables weight stressing the plug.
It could also be just that Microsoft used horrible cheap plugs, which is very likely given that all the connecting pins were UNDER the plug, not on the back like OP pic, so it's very likely to be less mechanically reliable.

Nevertheless, USB-A, USB-B, Mini, and Micro plugs, all never had such problems, it was also never a toss up what standard they supported, you could see it from either the color (USB-A) or the shape of the plug if they were USB 2 or USB 3.

The xxW on a charger only tells you the maximum output performance. But it doesn't tell you in what mode it is able to deliver that power.
Google Pixel devices only achieve their maximum charging speed with a specific extension of the USB Power Delivery standard. It's called PPS. Specifically the UP TO 21V at (minimum) 2.25A. It will say so on the charger if it supports PPS at that mode specifically. Most chargers don't btw. If they support PPS they only go up to 16V most of the time.

tldr Look for 45W PPS chargers with PPS 21V ~ 2.25A.

Every charger I have seen has printed on it the modes and the amps it can deliver in each mode on it.
