This field has become full of complete idiots, and they’re not just Indian either. You see countless programmers who now not only have a complete lack of curiosity about how computers work, they are proud to be completely ignorant of anything which doesn’t make them money on the spot. They argue about programming languages and base their opinions on market share. The entire community of programmers seems to base status not on merit or intelligence or interesting ideas but on fame and money.
No other field in STEM is like this. Anyone who learns a science is interested in the sciences, almost any real engineering degree attracts mostly people who are at least interested in quality engineering. This field has become filled with nothing more than vapid and proudly ignorant gold digging whores.

There was a significant period where programming was the "get rich quick" field
Three week React bootcamp was enough to get you a good paying job, so everyone hopped on the bandwagon, regardless of whether they had any actual interest in the field
Meanwhile all other scientific and engineering fields require significant time and effort investment so they didn't have this problem.
Now the market has overcorrected in the other direction, so even people who genuinely love CS struggle to find work, and turn cynical. and turn to "jobmaxxing with [tech stack]".
To say nothing of the people who got completely burnt out by corporate bullshit and are now doing the barest minimum.
The original passionate hacker culture got gutted by the series of tech booms and busts
>>
>>109044230
I have never seen a post on this website I agree with this much
>>

fpbp, this, and /thread
>>
>>109044230
The valuable part of programming for employers is improving efficiency of value extraction. Obviously this fact attracts people who don't care about the craft itself, but what it enables.
>>
>>109044230
I went to a talk where a very interesting and passionate guy gave a talk on FPGA programming but he got interrupted by questions like “who cares about this level of speed” and in the end the hosts just snickered something like “ok next one maybe something more accessible” even though plenty of people were nterested and the speaker took lots of time to explain any questions
Proudly ignorant does not begin to describe how bad this field has become
>>
>>109044366
Honestly doesn't feel like an engineering field anymore, feels more like law or business or something culturally.

There are interesting things to be done that I definitely count as engineering, but talking to these people is not like talking to engineers.
>>
>>109044391
It honestly kinda upsets me because it cheapens the title of "engineer", engineer is not something you grind to make 200k a year.
>>
>>109044230
Jews, unironically.
>>
>>109044230
>No other field in STEM is like this
lol
>>
>>109044464
It’s true. When did you hear of a scientist grinding their study for money? Engineering doesn’t have this culture to this extreme either.
>>109044391
Strong agree the culture feels like a business environment now
>>
Is anyone working on in cutting edge fields even impressed by OpenAI, Anthropic etc? Serious question. Everytime I talk to researchers of this caliber >>109044366 they just shrug.
>>
>>109044230
Because nerd shaming played an important role in ensuring only people with a tough as nails attitude and a burning need to be in tech went into the field.
Back in the day the "kinda good at math, wants a lot of money" raw material went into finance or engineering rather than becoming Brocoders.
Nowadays haha geek culture is trendy so mediocre people who just want a fat paycheck flood the field.
We have the same problem in chemistry. Most chemists shouldn't be anywhere near a lab.
>>
>>109044230
At least in physics we never have this problem because we always had a terrible job market, so nobody would do it for money. So the plus is that nearly everyone loves the field, but the downside is, of course, no money. It’s hard to say which is more demoralizing.
>>
>>109044730
chemistry? My experience has been trying to get traditional engineering students appreciate chemistry as being more than an annoying requirement they have to take and forget about.
>>
>>109044626
That other anon was right, and you’ve clearly never worked with jeet or chink scientists lol
>>
>>109045082
>”at least actual jeets are worse” is now the bar for white CS culture

That's the saddest part I'd say
Nothing more tragic than slowly falling out of love with the thing one used to be passionate about

VibeGODs can't stop winning
>>
>>109044794
Sounds like your neck of the woods is still healthy then.
A certain amount of ambient disrespect is politically devastating but culturally vital.
Microbiology is IME also getting way too cool. Cool people make great artists but rarely good researchers.
>>
>>109044725
There's plenty of high level people drinking the AI sauce, but most of the hype is coming from people who never cared about tech and just see it as a way to make more quick cash.
>>
>>109048338
AI was literally never even mentioned you fucking retard
>>
>>109044725
The talk I was referring to did actually have a couple of annoying “can you do AI with this” questions but he was pretty graceful about saying that wasn’t the point of the talk and trying to get back to the actual FPGA details
Just all around depressing
This board will never believe it but the most on topic questions actually came from a woman who I think was a colleague of his trying to steer thing back in the right direction, it’s not even a demographic thing but just a fucking atrocious level of low IQ people filling up the field and wanting to drag smart people who actually care down to their level and they don’t want anything to require any effort at all
One fag who asked who cares about nanoseconds was literally submitting job applications on his phone between asking stupid shit like that and then complaining at the end the talk was too hard to follow, these are the apes who make up this field now
>>
>>109048753
so? I can infer it from the context. Also the poster above litterally mentioned it
you are trans
>>
>>109048807
Nah, there's actual women interested in tech, but they tend to be autistic as the guys, all the kinds /g/ hates are the exact type of people who did >>109044270 bootcamp type shit like this, got filtered, but because they are socially capable ended up in leadership positions.
>>
>>109048855
This is true, the "real ones" women in tech mostly just consider themselves "people in tech" and the dumb bitches who are always trying to own women in tech are tech writers, technical marketing, or project management and are mostly disliked by the real ones I know. I have to say the talented women are exclusively of Chinese/Taiwan/Japanese/Russian descent and not Indian (which exist but suck), White (which do not exist), or anything else (which exist but top out at "just ok").
>>
>>109048262
It definitely hasnt
>>
>>109044230
The hiring process optimizes for normies. You're left with incompetent normies with no actual interest in computers or savants.
>>
>>109044230
Computers are a hobby for you, for me, they are a way to put meat on the table. I became a developer to earn money, not for self-fulfilment.

If you think that makes people like me morons, you are really childish. You judge people's intelligence by the knowledge in your very specific niche hobby.

You missed the point. The problem is people that learn only the bare minimum are only able to do the bare minimum. They offload all of the difficult tasks onto other people. They make their own lives better by making other people's lives worst.
>>
>>109051503
isn't it how it always goes everywhere? 20% of people do 80% of work?
>>

all this soapboxing about "i am LE PASSIONATE ABOUT TECH". who gives a shit?
go make something with your passion then. or was this post a veiled thread to bitch about there being no jobs?

Are you mad because you’re incompetent or something? People who are interested in tech are disproportionately the ones who do make their own stuff.

>>
>>109044230 >>109044366
My major problem with programmers is that they think 10 seconds on Google make them an expert on anything. It doesn't matter if you have worked in the firld for 10+ years or if you have a PhD in the field, if Google states something differently or fails to not anything baout exceptions or if there are (regulatory) differences across jurisdictions, they will dismiss you instantly. The same people have destroyed WIkipedia.
>>
>>109055419
This
In fact expertise is often a negative with some of these types who convince themselves experts are really idiots somehow, the same kind who will unironically try to argue universities are full of stupid professors or other bullshit like that
