Was able to avoid owning a cell phone for ~10 years of my adult life (until 2012), and there was a real luxury in being unable to receive calls while not at home or work. Everyone had to accept that they could only call me at certain times, and no emergency would change that. I called people back when I felt like it, and that was that. POCSAG is totally unencrypted you know. When I lived in Detroit I was able to pick up Canadian pager traffic with a RTL-SDR and there was all kinds of medical data in there from hospitals.

You needed a big pocket to carry it, and it was heavy. Even modern phablets ain't got nothing on that, and they're much more useful.Still better than finding working payphones.
