You are confused. Traditional version of Winamp still works great, and was updated in 2023: https://forums.winamp.com/forum/winamp/winamp-discussion/4615655-winamp-5-9-2-released WACUP is nice, but there's no point lying about the OG.

I miss it so much, mpv is pretty much the only substitute for it on linux, but it just isn't remotely good enough, even when configured, its just miserable software, made by miserable people, for miserable people

>>
>>109053734
Fair, I don't even know what that is and would say ripping CDs is pretty easy. But foobar also works perfectly under wine.
>>
>>109054701
AccurateRip is basically 2 things. The first is a database of drive offsets so that when you rip a CD, you aren't missing samples. The second is a database of CDs & their songs so each audio file you rip is checked against it. If they don't match, the track isn't an exact bit copy from the CD. It's basically only for those who are autistic about CD ripping like me. Spoon, the creator, also created dBpoweramp, which is the best CD ripper on the market. He has other software, with PerfectTunes being notable as it can check songs against AccurateRip and has a cover art search function which comes in handy.

I loved GOM Player for about a decade until they split it into a free version with ads and added a Pro version without them, like 10 years ago or something. This player combined with K-Lite would play anything you threw at it, and it had that feature where it was really good at playing broken media files. This was excellent for previewing video that was still just starting to download so I could see if it was worth finishing it, as in the case of downloading porn from a torrent on a slow connection, lol, I wouldn't wait all day for a 1.5GB video just to find out that it's not fappable for my tastes.

>>109050259
Is this still a thing? I remember it seemed to be dying off in the mid-2000s, like everything I searched for wouldn't download. Been torrenting exclusively since.

>>109050279
Just installed this on a work computer last night to crop screenshots after having not used it probably since Photoshop CS3 released just to see how it is these days. It was alright, I'm used to GIMP (I use CachyOS btw) and Photoshop so it was a little awkward but got the job done.

>>109050300
Not much to say about WinAMP. It was better than WMP, but after discovering fb2k in like 2006, I dropped it immediately.

>>109050464
Discovered this just a couple months ago and ditched FoxIt Reader, which has become such a bloated piece of shit over the past, I don't know, over a decade probably since I discovered it. Foxit used to be good at one time.

i could never ever get WINE to work on Mint until i downloaded a gaming platform through the software manager that thankfully had all of the dependencies and files for WINE in the right place. the one thing i miss about michaelsoft is having self-contained exe files instead of 1.1 GB tarballs full of loose files. shit is ugly

Most devs won't port to Linux because they would need to release their source code and use good cross platform libraries. Most proprietary software goes unpackaged on Linux. Most windows libraries are the EEE shenanigans everyone knows about, where the libraries are easy to use but not portable. To some extent, this is Microsoft's plan.

Additionally, lots of this software is kept proprietary to kill competition, as open source software allows any determined individual to easily iterate and improve it. Windows software is typically kept with a freeware model so that they can get all the users without opening themselves up to that competition. There is also some software that advertises itself as freeware while being spyware, but most windows users don't mind being spied on and wouldn't go checking their firewall anyways.

And of course, without source code, nobody can easily audit these things, which helps the developers continue these predatory practices.
>>
>>109065135
Kfind or, even faster
find (directory) | grep (filename)
>>
>>109063680
>>109065135
Everything (and most other tools like WizTree) heavily rely on the NTFS index to generate their databases (e.g. WizTree loads faster on a whole disk than large directories) and the fact that NT has a much more complete and robust filesystem notification API so they can trivially stay up to date from any file change, the equivalent on Lincucks you can only listen to individual inodes (not recursive) and there is an inode cap so it is not reasonable to receive filesystem wide notifications. Hence the equivalent on Unixes is typically running mlocate periodically and hoping you don't neee to find a recent file.
>>
>>109050374
DOS Interface file explorers are just limiting to me, IMO. That being said, I like Directory Opus, which carries the spirt of shit like Norton Commander and its innumerable derivatives. It's funny, I paid for that software, I usually balk at buying software, but that Aussie bastard did such a good job making that software it won me over and he deserved that money. He completely crushed File Explorer by Microsoft.
