It's know it's hard getting a real opinion on Apple here when you can't tell whether their opinion are from astroturfing shills, people that don't use them but have opinions on them anyway, memes, or from people that actually do use them, but I'll ask anyway. When you look at smartphones now compared to what they were over a decade, iphones were overpriced and lagged behind in features that Android already had. There was a lot of choice in different android vendors too which gave the option of more choice, more freedom, but today, it's mostly just Apple vs Samsung. There's still a few other Android phones to choose from, like Pixel phones that you can put GrapheneOS on, and there's still Sony Xperia phones, but I don't know much about those. A lot of the brands that we had in the early 10s are gone and now our choice is just a few brands, and if you're not using Graphene OS, you'll have to deal with Google's enshittification, and with the shit they're doing, they can affect custom ROMs too. With price, androids were always the affordable ones, and there are still cheap models like Samsung A series for basic shit, but for things better than that, I don't think there's much difference in price anymore. Apple has cheaper phones while Android have more expensive phones now. With laptops, it's the same. You only have a few options. Regular laptops with Microsoft pre-installed are crap and have crap hardware. Framework laptops are overpriced, and the older Thinkpads are on hardware from over a decade and a half. Macbooks, IDK, I haven't used an Apple product since the ipod touch, and I'm hesitant getting locked into an ecosytem, but still, I want to consider all options.
>>109063639No.
It used to be the case that Apple products were overpriced but now their products are just normally priced. The Apple product is always the best one in its price bracket but the catch is that you have to become a slave to the Ecosystem™ to get any use out of it.

>>109063639Since 2020 Google and Apple have been speedrunning making Android and iOS more and more fungible. All remaining differences in 2026 are extremely marginal. But that doesn't mean you wouldn't experience switching costs from inane things. So it's best to stick with whatever you're already using.>>109063677>the EcosystemBiggest meme of all time. Apple has publicly stated that over 60% of their customers only Apple product is an iPhone, albeit that was before airpods existed I think. All you have to do is look at iOS vs macOS marketshare, or Roku TV vs Apple TV marketshare, or fitbit vs apple watch marketshare. to realize the ecosystem is an advertising point not something people actually experience.

>>109063639their stuff lasts a long time. I traded in my 2019 intel mbp this year and still got $250 from apple for it, and it was still going strong. I could have ran it for years on an older version of the OS but I wanted the M4 chipset. I also have an iphoneXR that went for 6 years, I have two OG Homepods that are still working just fine, appletv box still going strong, etc.So, the quality is pretty high in my experience. Of course, I don't throw my shit around or mistreat it, which always helps. My advice is that if you do go down the apple path, try to adapt to their way of doing things when possible. It's much better than getting bent over Cut/Copy/Paste and similar shit.

Just use localSend if you need to transfer files between your phone and computer.
>>109065280>For me its about privacy.Apple is the wrong choice for privacy. Virtually everything they do is closed source, none of it is freely auditable. You literally have no way of knowing what's happening in the background of your iDevice.
>>109065315Apple is basically the only big tech company that litigates in favour of privacy. While Stallman grovelled and demanded that the government be free to inject your body with experimental mRNA treatments, Apple's been fighting in court to protect your right to end-to-end encryption.
>>109065315I know that but also its better than jewgle
>>109065342That's lovely, but the fact remains that you do not know what your computer is doing when you buy a computer from them. All their marketing around privacy essentially just boils down to "trust me bro."And let's be clear here; no single company is your friend. You must always assume that everything a corporation does is in their own best interest, and if their interests happen to line up with yours occasionally, great! But never assume you have the allegiance of any company. They will all betray you given any incentive because a company's purpose isn't to care about your privacy or do what's right. A company's purpose is to make money. We all saw how this went in 2021 with their little iCloud image hashing stunt. Apple is not your friend. For privacy, it's best to use a system you don't HAVE to trust because you KNOW how it works and can audit or edit any part of it freely.
>>109065368Sure, Google is not your friend either, but Android is an open source OS. There are degoogled forks you can use. You don't have to trust it.
>>109065386Google does android development in private branches now and many components are closed source. Either way you get closed source binaries. Id rather get mine from a company thats primary income is not from selling user data. Lesser of two evils
>>109065404Privacy and security are matters of odds. Your privacy is less likely to be breached by a system that is auditable and customizable to at least some extent than by one that is essentially a black box system that gives the user 0 insight into its operations. But if AOSP's tolerances are too much for you, it would be better to not use a smartphone at all and instead use different dedicated devices for different tasks. Inconvenient, but private.
Only vintage Apple hardware is “worth it” and by that I mean worth fixing, upgrading, and using as a daily driver. You will be more productive as a creator with a vintage Mac. When I bring college geek girls into my home and they see my retro “workspace” I can immediately sense their pussies moistening in anticipation. Sex always follows after I boot up a few games on my SE/30
>>109065429Thats the thing tho i like the convenience of using a banking app and having a phone for maps and renting from bikeshares. I cant use a custom rom or roll my own android so im gonna go with iOS every time. If apple starts selling my data to advertisers then the choice would be harder

>>109065458If you value convenience more than privacy, that's a perfectly legitimate stance, but you will have to accept that neither option here is totally safe. I will say, though, that degoogled Android gets closer to that threshold than iOS does because of its internal structure, even though the entity that maintains it has terrible privacy standards outside of that. >I cant use a custom rom or roll my own android Why not?
>>109063639If you can tolerate how locked down they are I think iPhones are worth it. They get security updates for like twice as long as the competition.
>>109063639Macs have top-tier CPUs with low power draw, but mid GPUs. Their unified memory makes them good for local AI and some other 3d stuff. If you are an engineer or a gamer you might find that the software you need is not usable without emulation or a vm. They are alright.

My thing about the iPad is most of them use the M series chips but don't actually do anything with them. What's the point of putting the same chip in a tablet that powers the iMac but give it the same software that runs on the iPhone? The iPad has so much horsepower but doesn't let you do anything with it except watch Netflix and check your email. You can't even develop iPad apps on an iPad.
>>109065243You can run Asahi on the M1 Pro, but honestly, it's not worth it because you won't see any software optimization at all. For instance, Safari performs way better than other browsers on silicon, and that's just a fact.If you want linux laptop, buy used intel panther lake or ai max ryzen.

I just wish Apple didn't force Apple ID. I've always hated the idea of having an online account tied to a device, not just for privacy/security reasons but also just being an abstraction. I don't understand why it can't if I want to download an app or update something just let me use it without an Apple ID and just input my information whenever necessary. Hell, if they want an account tied to that stuff, fine, but the account should be specifically for the App Store and iCloud, not the whole device. And I don't even care about iCloud to begin with. I do respect Apple's model, but I do also wonder if getting a Pixel with custom firmware could work. But something about the design of iOS is just very intuitive for a phone, they just got it right the first time.
>>109065434How exactly do you make that work though? I'm sure you could push it remarkably far for stuff like text editing and basic development though.>>109065473Yes, but Apple hides it better. That's why people don't hate them as much as Google, because their black boxes are marketed as more premium and "secure" even if it's just a different asshole
>>109065676You don't need account to download software or use macbook. You can completely disable SIP if you want to.
>>109065753I don't own a Mac. I own an iPhone. I've considered looking into one before though, but not sure. I do admire how Apple designs things I also just don't really like lock-in though either.
Apple is locked down, which is better for security. Also, while does spy on you, they're not nearly as bad as Google. Google makes money selling your private data, Apple makes their money selling hardware and subscriptions. So, I would rank Apple top tier in security and mid-tier for privacy.
>>109065568If you use UTM to run a VM the M series chip might be worth it but desu the real reason to get an iPad isn't the chip it's for the form factor of the Mini
Historically, Apple's core strength has been optimization, not security. We're talking about the same company that gave us the effective power glitch here. There used to be a saying: Apple can do with 8 GB what other companies can't do with 16. That used to be true, but they've been slipping hard for the last 5 years or so, so it's no longer really accurate. Their software is glitchy and bloated AF nowadays. So there isn't really much of a benefit to buying their stuff anymore.Their only saving grace right now is Apple Silicon. I never thought I'd see a day where this was the case but Apple's laptops are genuinely far more powerful than just about any Windows machine you could get for the same price or less. Other than that, steer clear.

Is there any hub or dock option that would allow me to connect to two displayports or hdmis into it and then connect that hub to a single thunderbolt 4 port on the macbook?
>>109075181yea there's lots of em
>>109075181> connect to two displayports or hdmis into it Lot of offered, but few works good. Just order some and send the bad ones back. Imo not a mpment to be cheap.>>109063639>Are Apple products actually worth itFor me not, i am used to Win/Thinkpad and after a few months on McBook i started to hate it (usually io do not care because my contact to the OS is Midnight/Total Commander and powershell etc). Good machine for tech illeterates, Apple helds the resale value high but it's feels like driving a US car on a German Autobahn, simply do not fit.
>>109063639A coworker of mine is wanting to sell his Mac mini m1 for ~$180, but Im thinking of talking him down to $150. Is that a good price for it?It's configured with 16GB of ram and 1TB of storage.Just wondering if M1 is still worth it. I just want it as a dev box so I can build and test software for apple devices too.
>>109075181Can't you daisy chain shit on the Mac? I thought that was a big selling point of thunderbolt or whatever.
>>109076354Yeah it's decent for $150, especially since it's got 16Gb of RAM. It's still a perfectly functional computer, better than what I'm using right now for sure lol. The only question is how long Apple will support it, since you can't really run linux or any alternative OS on it, but Apple has a pretty good track record of supporting shit for a long time, even when it's wildly out of date.
>>109076354you'd be in the top 5 percent of /g/ with any apple silicon
>>109075181could literally get a ugreen thunderbolt 5 dock and be fine
>>109063639>>109063639Im using apple products for the past 4 years. Before that I used Ubuntu for about 12 years.Company I started to worked gave me a macbook and an iphone, and once i left, i bought myself also a macbook. the cheapest Air at that time. I always hated on apple because of /g/, then I stopped being stupid and actually formed my own opinion. In web development, I need to make sure stuff works everywhere so developing on mac solves the Safari and iOS issue when testing.I love that it can be operated like a linux machine and is not just built as a layer over it like on Windows when you try to use bash for example.Yes its expesnive. But this laptop battery is crazy and the screen is good enough that i now just use it regardless of traveling or actually siting at home. I also bought my own iphone after i had to return the company one, purely because of the integratoins.everyone tells you that "android had this and that for ages" but its not about the specs, its about the design. Simply something being very easy to use makes you use it more and natively. The airpods for example, I connected them after the purchase to the iphone, and its just connected. when i put it in my ears, its already paired, i dont have to do anything. Its the "seemlessness" i appreciate the most. Like shared clipboard between devices for example.
Should I get an iPhone 17 for the 120hz screen or a 17e for the bigger battery and better modem?
>>109076571>Apple has a pretty good track record of supporting shit for a long time, even when it's wildly out of dateGive me 1 instance of this
>>109079433They supported 2010-2012 iMacs and Mac Pros until 2020-2022. That’s a decade.
>>109079465Ah so they drop them as soon as they release Apple Non-silicon and dropped Intel. Got it.

Every apple thread is a win/linux user cope session. If you could play your precious windows games on it, you'd see the board instantly turn from /g/ to /apple/ support board.
>>109063639Yes if you are already in the ecosystem. No if you are poor.Ultimately everything is going to get shit anyway as the surveillance states ramp up more. If you still use your devices for more than 2 hours a day within the next decade, you are cucked.
>>109063639get an xperia (III or IV that are the last ones with notifications led) and put a custom rom on itget a thinkpad, even recent ones are good, worse than the old ones but still good enough, and put linux on if
I bought a Macbook Neo recently because I needed a new laptop and the price was decent and I'm actually fairly happy with it. This is coming from someone that's been an Apple hater for years.
>>109063639Only Apple product I own is a set of wired (3.5mm) earbuds, and they're genuinely the best earbuds I've ever used. (Worth noting, I hate rubber tips, so I'm limited in my choices, before the earbuds my favorites were the Nokia default followed by Samsung default). Buttons only work on iOS and Mac, but I knew that going in and didn't mind

>>109063811>>the Ecosystem>Biggest meme of all time. Apple has publicly stated that over 60% of their customers only Apple product is an iPhoneIt's a sad state of affairs. As someone who is actually deep in the Apple ecosystem (the only devices from the main categories that I don't own are Watch and Vision Pro) I would say that Mac / MacBooks are the main reason for hopping in the bandwagon. If I didn't use a macOS device, I would probably use a Framework or System76 laptop with some Linux distro and an AMD Risen AI chip with a nice amount of unified memory. I understand why the normies are raving about iPhones, iPads and their nice MacBook Airs with which they write emails and watch YouTube, and I'm grateful if they do since without them Mac would be a tiny platform. The phones and the tablets are nice but they are not significantly better than the competition. iOS and iPadOS might share the kernel with macOS but you only get the benefits of the UNIX on macOS.
>>109083313>you only get the benefits of the UNIX on pajeetOS.do the needful saaarrr
>>109083313>Framework or System76 laptopOverpriced, just like MacBooks.
>>109063639Apple products are nice, better than Framework
>>109083403Yeah that might well be but with a lot of other manufacturers you have to first uninstall Windows as your first order of business. Framework and System76 respect your time by offering Linux preinstalled.Don't get me wrong, I have used and have somewhat fond memories of using Windows 98 and Windows XP. As time has went on I've come to realise that there is inherently nothing wrong with the Windows UI (although it's a clusterfuck), but with the fundamentals of the system. If they stopped playing games with WSL and WSL2 and just ditched the NT kernel in favour of an actual Linux kernel and got rid of DirectX for good measure Windows would be a pretty cool distro. With regards to gaymen not working, fuck you. Donate to the Wine project or buy stuff from Steam so Valve can continue developing Proton if gaming is so precious to you.
I have the Macbook Air and I think it was worth it. Feels solid, nice keyboard and screen, good battery. Most importantly, it's completely fanless and never overheats unless doing system upgrades or video encoding (which is rare).Still in 2026 for some reason no PC manufacturer can make a good performing, fanless laptop which I would buy because I prefer Windows over Macos.
