For a very long time you could test your programs with 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 and reasonably expect that it would work for everyone. Even corner cases would have reasonable DPI.
I miss Greybird. Every modern implementation kinda sucks. I just use its color scheme on KDE these days.
