Why has no newer codec taken off the way that H.264 did?
>>
you're talking about webp
>>
h.264 had widespread hardware support. HEVC patents are more expensive so there isn't as much hardware support
>>
>>109068793
basically jews
>>
>>109068793
Is it the last big case of a symbiosis of proprietary and consumer adoption or has there been others since?
>>
>>109068793
hevc is almost 15 years old anon
he said newer codec
>>
>>109068838
yeah its newer than h.264 though

AV1 seems to be making a very decent attempt. Encoding H.264 video through x264 is now slower and less efficient than encoding AV1 video through SVT-AV1.

https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/108968571

Websites like umigalaxy now support it, which is a drop in the bucket of what websites support H.264 but it's something.
>>
Half the movies on torrent sites are h.265 now.
>>
>>109068766
AV1 hasn't? A lot of popular websites have been using AV1 for a while now and user AV1 encodes have started to show up on both public and private trackers now.

we'll see about that
>>
>>109069501
Man, this really shows how utterly KIKED this country is when patent trolling is still allowed.

On the bright side this won't affect public and private trackers.
>>
Like other anon said, H264 has ubiquitous hardware support. Even PSP can decode H264 movies and this was a 2005 handheld. It's the "just werks" codec even though there are better options now.
>>
>>109069200
Don't care, piracy scene groups are still using AVC and HEVC.
>>
>>109069881
Will AV2 win, or will VVC be the just werks codec of the next two decades?
>>
>>109069200
Can confirm AV1 encoding is pretty fast and about half the size of h.264. only shit deal is bad support.
I need to build my own media thing because the stupid android media boxes can never play my content.

AV1 was actually built with backwards compatability in mind. It software decodes faster than HEVC in my experience. Depending on how low you set the bar, AV1 can be decoded by a shockingly large amount of outdated/obsolete devices.

1080p 10-bit AV1 seems to be backwards compatible with computers from 10 years ago and with phones from 5 years ago. 1080p 8-bit AV1 might be backwards compatible with computers from 15 years ago and phones from 10 years ago but I'm not autistic enough to test this.

>>109069931
VVC has TERRIBLE backwards compatability, if they force it on the goyim it could bring about the fourth reich IMHO.
>>
>>109069931
av1 because it has igpu and tv decode support. av2 is too new and would require new hardware.

Things aren't looking all rosy for H264 either, at least legally
>>
>>109069983
wtf, I thought patents expired? Is 4chan fucking retarded for adopting this kike shit so meekly? I never liked how it invited twitter troons here in the first place...
>>
>>109068766
>that H.264 did
Because videos have to be able to be played in 20yo turd world computers and 10yo old phone SoCs.
That's why, despite nowadays 1440p and 4k displays being the norm, there's still more 720p movies and shows being released for download than actually full, blu-ray quality, ones.
>>
>>109069983
Why didnt they just use daala or thor instead of paying for this shit.
>>
>>109070022
Or force people to use vp9 since it's superior anyway.
>>
>>109069908
skill issue, find a better scene

God I hate Dolby so much. Nobody even gave a fuck when EAC3 came out and was meant to replace AC3. I'll probably get corrected by an Anon who'll say that DD+ is in some spec like ATSC3 but I still hate Dolby.

>>
>>109069931
VVC is ridiculously slow, and like HEVC has people busy fighting over licensing and royalties. I would definitely place my bets on AV2.
Interestingly enough though, China really likes VVC, it might win there

At some point we have to break even with the turbo poorfags man. Using the conservative 10 year backwards compatability with computers and 5 yeat backwards compatability with phones regarding 1080p 10-bit (so video won't look like baded dogshit anymore) AV1...

I think 2030 is a pretty optimistic timeframe for that...
>>
>>109070316
You'd love webshit frameworks with how often they break shit
