can someone explain like i'm retarded the difference between FreeBSD and OpenBSD?
and which one is better for a crappy laptop

neither will have drivers hope this helps

thanks

Something that used to be an alternative to Linux but isn't anymore. Use it if you want to be really goth and weird I guess.

>OpenBSD
This, on the other hand, is possibly the most secure OS in existence. Great for routers, switches, firewalls, etc.

>and which one is better for a crappy laptop
Just install Linux on your laptop.

Is there an article or something I can look up to know why is that?

no

how does this impact the end user

BSDs are traditionally crappy on laptops. The most common problem is running way too hot. The two top causes of this are:

One: inability shut off the second graphics card if you have a laptop with both motherboard gfx and Nvidia gfx card. This is a long-solved problem in Linux but not in BSD. The BSD people I communicated with on this matter have an attitude of waiting until that hardware combo goes away, so that they don't have to do anything.

Two: CPU scaling. It exists in BSD but in some distros (openBSD being one) it's disabled by default. Enabling it, if possible, is not done al all like it is in Linux. The explanations that I was able to find all read like: "grob flooble neep, dechun fzar karsap," and perhaps a mumbling about rebuilding the kernel.

In summary: just install each BSD in turn and stay with the first one that doesn't run hot on your laptop. If there is one, that is.

That's netbsd

FreeBSD because software runs noticeably faster on it due to different priorities. It also has much more software ported to it and in official repos.

Deb Goodkin, The president of the FreeBSD Foundation, didn't use FreeBSD until recently.

FreeBSD is good for laptops, desktops and servers. It has FreeBSD ports which is similar to Gentoo's portage or the AUR. It also has Valve's Proton and a Linux subsystem.
OpenBSD is better if you're a schizo. They purposely strip out features they deem insecure or hazardous. It doesn't even have Bluetooth. Use it if you're running a darknet drug ring.

It's still an alternative to Linux.

But when it comes to BSD you have to start thinking about things like weather your hardware has support for it and what the differences are between it and Linux.
