>>109073724dealing with this in my town/county right now. In general, there is no issue with a data center that is all the significantly different from any other industrial type site. Factories and the like use power/water, can affect the environment around them etc. Are there concerns about building data centers, again like any industrial project, sure there are. But people are really blowing things out of proportion..at least with the physical aspects of a data center. Getting into AI, and data privacy etc thats whole other thing
>>109073713>>109073724>politicians have convinced everyone that data centers are what sent their utility bills through the roofI have worked at multiple datacenters and I have been told directly by management that this is the case, and been given a breakdown of how local politicians are bribed. Datacenters do in fact subsidize their energy costs by passing that cost onto local residents, and politicians are aware of and enabling this system.>>109074661>>109074998It's hard to quantify the jobs. A lot of work is put into engineering teams and management. At AWS, a team has to work with networking, solve networking tickets, a team works on a specialized Linux distro, create debugging scripts, a system to automatically detect failures using that, etc. However, many of these jobs do not scale with # of datacenters.1/2
Another issue is how long all of this will last. AI has already replaced lots of these members, and there's a lot less foundational work as the time goes on. A lot of these datacenters are needing less work day by day, and systems are being put into place to break issues down into readable instructions so that less and less skilled workers will be at these datacenters. Soon it will be just like a warehouse job: pick up part, replace part, reseat host, close ticket.Per datacenter a few low paying temporary jobs are created. As a hole, a lot of jobs already exist to manage these datacenters, but those jobs are being reduced day by day, as increasingly ai is used to manage the datacenter itself. >>109074767It actually depends on the datacenter, some datacenters are quiet.>>109074664you stupid goyim, they are literally sanitizing the world and turning everything into safe mush. >>109074767Yeah but it's not just people living next to it, it's everyone. If it was just that it was loud and stinky the only people who would care would be the ones right next to them. In my state at least, the real reason all the utility costs went through the roof (aside from the usual CoL increases in the last five years) was that they started shuttering many of the power plants with the intention of replacing them with wind and solar power, which obviously never came online. So they had to start beating the drum that it was AI data centers hogging all the power to shift the blame.
>>109075136>shuttering power plantsEvery time the lack of power gets brought by by smooth brains I like to remind them that we can make all the power we need an more. We just wont do it for...reasons. Which, like you say, is a significant reason the power costs are going up.

Not a problem in the Nordics. Data centers produce lots of low quality waste heat that is perfect for cheap district heating.

>>1090737131.) They are not datacenters. They are components of a supercomputer aggregate. 2.) They are being build as the latest weapon to kill labor cost (menial white collar labor). The problem is that whole ML/LLM ecosystem hasn't been proven itself to be economically viable at all, but investment types are irrationally betting their farm on it. They are hedging on the hope it will become significantly cheaper in capital expenditure and operational costs in the near-future All evidence points this being the opposite. The amount of innovations we are going to get as a result of AI fixing the average person's day to day is massive. The lack of inspiration I am seeing from most comments online suggests to me that most people are quite literally useless eaters. Not in a bad or subhuman way, but in a way that they have never done anything of any real note and have very little agency over their actual lives. It is ok to be like that, but its kind of scary this is literally 90% of the population being afraid of a technology that will quite literally allow them to have the kind of expertise and information crunching capability that was at one point only available to someone with a multi millionaires resources. >>109075026The issue is just that. In case you're too young to remember (not throwing shade since this is an actual possibility now), there was a time when different forums had clearer identities because the people who gathered in then limited themselves to one or two websites in which they could actually discuss in long form. Thus each fostered something of a local culture since they attracted slightly different kinds of people and anyone unwilling to act like a roman in Rome was rightfully shunned and cast out. What I suspect we have now is a growing demography of people addicted to stimulation, browsing a dozen websites, cycling between all tabs they can hold open before they run out of ram, grafting each site into every other to get a reaction, any reaction, since the goal is just having any reaction at all, the quality of which matters very little because it's enough that it's there. So you get people posting screenshots of reddit or twitter, or youtube thumbnails, which amount to turning this place a little more into reddit, a little more into twitter, a little more into youtube comment sections. It would do no harm if discussion on reddit or twitter stayed on reddit and twitter, so that we could avoid that shit by just not going there, but no. As of now it seems no website is allowed to be itself anymore. Every place is turning into everywhere else, although to some limited degree since each site is not internally homogenous. There are always those old farts, plus the kids who can imagine how better things could be, who don't seem to mind the fact they're increasingly outnumbered and act as if the board's or the site's culture could still be saved from disintegration. Not that any variation of fishing for (You)s is anything new, but the scale is unprecedented. I suspect this is mostly becase of smartphones, but that's beside the point, the people who don't participate in it are thinning out.
