Does Valve even give a shit about this thing anymore? Maybe they'll stealth drop some Alex-like game but shouldn't they be trying to revive some interest in VR, especially since they got extra time with the delays?
I’ve noticed that Windows Mixed Reality is still included in even the latest builds of Windows 11. I thought it was getting removed. That means thousands of VR games are still available through the Windows Mixed reality portal
>>109074523I have a feeling that the main use case isn't even dedicated VR games.
VR already plateaued unless something major is developed outside of their capabilities anyway. People at Valve just do whatever they want and I imagine the novelty with VR has worn off at this point with nothing new being done with it.
>>109074523Valve can't really control what 3rd partiy studios are doing, but I think it'll launch with something that hopefully isn't just a 20 minute long tech demo. Last I heard is companies that previously exclusively made games for the Quest are probably bringing them to steam as native Frame titles. Anyone else is probably fence sitting to see if Frame sells well unless it's a passion project for VR.
>>109074558>I’ve noticed that Windows Mixed Reality is still included in even the latest builds of Windows 11. I thought it was getting removed. It was. At least drivers or something were. I don't know, I'm still on Win10. But people were bitching about it and either threw their headsets away or sold them for pennies only for Oasis to restore WMR headset compatibility to Win11 last year.https://store.steampowered.com/app/3824490/Oasis_Driver_for_Windows_Mixed_Reality/
>>109074696I still have my HP Reverb G2 like new in the box. I’m going to check this out!
>>109074523They will obviously launch their new VR googles in sync with a killer app/game that plays to the strengths of the new hardware that will run like butter on the Steam Frame and like shit on the alternative VR googles. Duh.
>>109074523I play Steam VR alot, but last few years really struggle to find some new game that is worth it.Anyway i would say the bets VR game of this years so far is FlatOut 4: Total Insanity VR released last month.
>>109074592Unfortunately it was mainly used for boring wave shooters even in it's heyday. It's a shame, what I really wanted out of VR was better cockpit simulators, akin to VTOL VR but for everything from tanks to space ships and automobile racers. But aside from a few standouts it never really came together.
>>109075107there's a good VR Tank simulator? sauce !!
>>109075107motion controls suck dick desu
>>109074558they partnered with Meta WMR has official Quest 3 support including arm64 version of Windows 11
>>109074523You are right, the VR games industry is in the gutter and it has pretty much always been there. Faceberger buying everything out and trying to make their own low-performance walled garden is what killed it.One would indeed think that Valve would have some major game to release along with their new headset, but frankly I kind of doubt it and would be very surprised to see it. I'm already quite surprised they're making the Frame in general, given how stagnant / lacking the game development part of the VR industry is.Honestly the best content in VR is comprised of ports & mods of normal games into VR with VR controls added. The VR-only stuff tends to be way worse, with the extremely rare exception like Alyx.
>>109075530No there isn't, and there should be, that's what I was trying to say
>>109075737resident furries at valve wanted to abuse resources to make their dream headset
>>109075107>mainly used for boring wave shootersnah, i never gave shit about wave shooters, there are better games - Pavlov VR was great, played it almost every day... until it went from 3000 players just few y ago to NOW fucking 60-90 players (110 on the weekend).. i played my favourite Push mod in pavlov every single day, there were several severs FULL, now im lucky if there is at least one half full Push server on saturday night :(((((
>>109076868Maybe being fully wireless will finally give some games a perk up, being tethered was the biggest thing I hated
>>109076868Sure there were always good games, that's why I stuck with the tech. My favorites were Into The Radius, VTOL, Blade and Sorcery, Dirt 2 in VR... but those games are diamonds in a sea of wave shooter and 'virtual experience' sloppaI'm just bemoaning what could have been
>>109076904it will be shit because 2hour battery life... you will either be tethered to the charger or the multiplayer games will be still empty because the headset will stop working after few hours...
>>109076973and now the Flatout 4 VR - would say best VR game of this year so far
>>109074523Most people realize that vr gaming is junk.
>>109074523I don't think dedicated VR games are necessarily the way to go. They will currently always be kind of niche no matter what in an industry that has already massively slowed down.VR modding and conversions becoming easier and more streamlined whether the developers like it or not is the way to go.I also just don't see Valve making their own big game from scratch, since for the most part they've just acquired and funded existing game development.>>109076829Furry ERP is truly a bastion of technological progress and forward thinking. The greater tech industry and its mantra of "move fast, destroy existing infrastructure and hope your local politicians have invested in your company" stands humbled by future heat casualties armed with copious amounts of lubricant and disposable autismbux.>>109077029Hotswap battery packs are a thing.
I enjoy VR porn.
>>109074592The quest and frame standalones were looking to be the next evolution, basically a new form of monitor. But the hardware insanity has put a damper on all of that.
>>109077034I haven't tried it but I always liked the old Flatout games, I'm give it a look
>>109077074In fact they have explicitly said they support external battery packs for the Frame with the charger port being on the back.
>>109074592I present to you - the innovation that will revive the VR industry. Nowadays they even have ones with heated sleeve and automatic lube dispenser add-on
>>109075737>Honestly the best content in VR is comprised of ports & mods of normal games into VR with VR controls addedI wouldn't agree with that, I think made for VR games (the non-slop ones) are usually better than converted 2d games. But converted 2d games makes more sense economically, you're right about that. And they are more likely to get people to try out VR. it's correct the hardware price issues lately have really fucked VR. It'll always be a niche peripheral, akin to HOTAS setups, and I think the industry was always banking on the costs to come down eventually to make it more of a viable industry.
I want a Steam Frame so bad.
>>109078860The battery pack being on the back of the headset really fucking sucks. I get that it's supposed to be for balance or something, but now you can't use VR leaning against a wall/headboard in bed. Now you can't be in VR while wearing a hoodie. Fuck.
>>109078860I couldn't take it anymore and bought a used Index. Kinda low resolution but it's still a great headset, fits my glasses comfortably and the tracking is insanely good.
>>109079528Looks nice.
>>109077888Based Mantis-X
>>109081973Def not true, listening to Gabe videos on youtube is like listening to a really good teacher, dreamer and friend.
VR probably needs to stand on its own, independant of games... and meta just lost like a billion billion dollars attempting thati feel like it should be the norm eventually, even just as a peripheral
>>109079528was that better value than a quest? i had vive but i upgraded to quest 2 when it was still super cheap. it was a great investment at the time
>>109077888These things are a gimmick because they're loud and it's so easy to slip out and hurt your dick if you aren't rock hard. I own a more expensive dick sucking machine that doesn't have either issue because it's vacuum based, but I wouldn't bother hooking it up for VR.
>>109081973Newell isn't your friend. He is a capitalist just like any other, and he operates under the systemic constraints of capitalism. He doesn't do what is "good"; he does what is profitable first and foremost. That is why Steam games are DRM-protected and require the launcher. That is why Valve raised the price of the Steam Deck. The myth of "Good Guy Gaben" is simply a marketing psyop.
I'll just save the money to buy Steam stocks in the future when his racing son makes Steam public.
>valve isn't a charity therefore badokay but if this is your line of thinking it's so universal and benign that you should stick to shutting the fuck up
Steam Frame when though?
>>109077965>I think made for VR games (the non-slop ones) are usually better than converted 2d gamesThe problem with made-for-VR games is that they focus on making some VR mechanics but forget to actually make a good game to go along with it. This is why 2D conversions are very frequently better, because when those games were made there was actual focus on making a good game, not just on making a cool VR gimmick and a smooth control system and then treating everything else, like the actual game mechanics and the actual game content as an afterthought. So many "good" VR games are nothing but sodden, worthless arenas, "roguelites" with procedurally generated levels consisting of like 4 rooms and 3 corridors each or some sort of wave shooter shit. Or maybe you beat all the content in like 2h instead. Yes there are a few exceptions, but very, very few. The current attempt at VR started over a decade ago and there's hardly anything to show for it.>>109082520No that's the thing, it needs EXACTLY the opposite and it failed because no use case other than games is compelling at all, yet paradoxically all the insane budgets were dumped into worthless garbage nobody actually cares about and effectively 0 actual investment went into games. No, no, I will not were some crap on my face in order to swing documents around on pretend virtual screens. If I want to look at a screen, I look at a real monitor or TV that I own, with nothing hanging off my face. No, I don't want a gay corporate VR avatar to talk to other people either, I can already talk to them across many different channels and I don't need an avatar version of myself to do it.
>>109082526never owned a quest, looking at the specs i'd say yes unless you want to use it without a pc of course.
>>109074523they know VR is dead, they're trying to pivot to steam deck on your face
>>109079528>can’t take it anymore. >buys an 8 year old headsetUh
>>109082976>all the insane budgets were dumped into worthless garbage nobody actually cares about and effectively 0 actual investment went into games.Yeah, Zuckerkike wanted the world to be a sterilized, corpo version of Roblox where everyone had to pay him twenty bucks for a hat or whatever. But he was saying hey, don't you people want to have a business meeting in VR and you can be an astronaut and your boss is a genie, or whatever? And everyone was like no, I want to have the camera turned off and muted during Zoom meetings and only turn it on for the two minutes that I actually have to say something. Like he was totally under the impression that everyone wanted to be as 100 percent invested in corpo bullshit as he is. Meanwhile, the actual 'game' attached to it was just bullshitty Roblox with no legs
VR should have been bigger than AI.
>>109083541Quest 3 screen is higher resolution and optics are waaaaay better. Fresnel lenses are trash.
>>109075697So does this mean it only works with Quest 3 or does my HP Reverb G2 have a WMR life extension (besides oasis driver)
I know the fags on every /v/ vr thread say the same thing every time>How come it doesn't directly inject into my spine>Why can't this literally kill me>Flat games are intrinsically bad>My dick is still only a quarter of an inch, VR HAS FAILED ME!But are you guys over on /g/ this retarded?Me personally I'm excited that Valve is cleaning up the absolute fucking state of using VR headsets as a general display, and I sort of hope it means a renaissance of 3D applications.
>>109074523VR honestly kinda sucks. The novelty wore off completely for me within a couple of weeks. >put stupid thing on head>can never quite seem to get the focus right>trip over coffee table>missus thinks I'm a fuckwit
>>109086099VR is the best for simulation. Racing sims, flight sims, farm equipment sims, even truck driving sims. Basically any sim where you sit in a cockpit.
>>109086060You know, I had the first HTC vive, that shipped with shitty fresnel lenses. I replaced them with aftermarket glass lenses and the difference was night and day. It was like a new headset. When I ordered the index, I was pretty disgusted to find that it had shitty fresnel lenses in it. I didn't check before I bought it what kind of lenses it had, fresnels are such shit that it honestly didn't even occur to me that Valve might put them in their 'high end' product. In some ways it was actually a step down in quality from the modded Vive.
>>109082617Pretty sure you can crack steam games easily if they don't come with their own DRM.Correct me if I'm wrong, but basically all gaymes you can find currently on torrents are snatched from steam.
>>109086379Yeah I've always said the same thing, I've thought it was strange that devs seemed to keep bonking their heads against shooters when they never really solved the movement issue (thumbstick movement works 'okay', but it's not perfect). Could have been making some kick ass tank games, spaceship games, etc
>>109083755It's not really dead, it is overpriced.>>109086560>I replaced them with aftermarket glass lenses and the difference was night and day. It was like a new headsetDidn't knew it was a thing. Are those donor lenses from samsung Gear VR?
>>109086689>it is overpricedthe amount of tech in each headset is nutsmost are sold at a loss (quest/pico) and the rest have very tight marginsi think the displays themslves in the newest pimax ones are like 600 bucks sony panels
>>109086744>the amount of tech in each headset is nutsNah. It is probably not cheap in terms of RnD, but tech itself is quite old. Maybe those high res panels are not something you can find anywhere, they're probably custom. But the rest of it? And other lower res headsets? They're pretty junk.If you are impressed and have the aptitude, maybe try to DYI your own. It's literally that kind of tech you can DIY, so...
