I'm a SWE with 3 YoE in a major city in the southeast US. I got hit by layoffs 6 months ago and just got my first offer recently. At my previous job I was making almost $100k and this new job is offering $70k and fully remote work. I don't really have any leverage right now to try to talk them up on the pay, should I just take this job in the meantime for the stability?

I have a CS degree, too. But I keep getting ghosted after ghosted, and also rejections. I got message to move forward with applications on IT jobs and sys admin work more than dev workBut those ghost me right after, when they send their faggy AI questionnaire system to me via email. It's driving me fucking insane right now, and I want to kill myself, I think about it every day. It makes me even more furious when people seem to be getting hired out of the blue as well with little experience.

Trying again.Whats your average pass rate from initial HR interview to technical test?I have a degree and 5+ years of experience. Ive been applying to only relevant postions and aiming for 50 applications/week. From these 50 i tend to get 4-5 interviews with HR, so around 10% pass rate. Now im getting stuck at this initial contact since i go to the 2nd inteview once every 20 initial HR attempts. I even started recording myself and compared to some mock interviews from youtube but i dont find anything wrong.

I got rejected.I'm completely at a loss. In every other interview I've known where I fucked up or what I said wrong. Not this time. Through the two rounds I had, they went down the entire list - classes, extensions, protocols (interfaces), property wrappers, attributes, macros, concurrency (both GCD and async / await), memory management, architecture patterns, etc. I was able to answer 90-95% of the questions correctly and did well on the live coding. I also got along great with both of the interviewers I had.I guess I just have to be perfect. I'm still going to be interviewing with another team but starting all over again and waiting weeks between rounds, especially when I did so well here, is crushing.

>>109080039Yes, I do have a portfolio, I've worked on projects before. But it doesn't get you hired, no one cares, unless the work you've done is somehow used by thousands or tens of thousands. At that point, you're better of just monetizing whatever thing you built already.
>>109080060Sell your portfolio. Create new ones if they dont sell. You either work for yourself or you depend on others to hire you to do things that you could be doing yourself but at a fraction of the cost.
>>109080011>>made mistakesThe interview format was different compared to every other interview I've gone through. They started off by asking easy questions and kept making them more difficult until I couldn't answer. Like in the first interview the live coding question was "do you know what a set is" and then by the second interview at the end they were asking me in which scenarios the compiler vs the runtime handles memory allocation / deallocation, how obj-c interoperability works with swift, how GCD handles posix thread scheduling in C. Shit that you don't need to know unless you're developing frameworks, which is not what I applied for. I still gave decent answers. The guy I interviewed with was a senior dev that had worked on tons of low level shit in C, there was just no way I would be able to answer everything if he really wanted to dig into me.
>>109080096so then you know exactly where you went wrong then. Every question you couldn't answer.

What's the best way to test skills and aptitude in an interview in the age of AI? I'm going to be interviewing candidates soon and we used to do a take home programming challenge and then an in person code review. It was a MUCH better indicator of potential than DSA/logic puzzles ever were, and it so acted as a filter for people who literally couldn't make code compile (surprisingly common). Now anybody can complete the challenge in 10 minutes with one prompt. We don't actually have an issue with AI usage in and of itself, but we've also found from past hires that vibe coders generally can't hang when something requires critical thinking and can't just be prompted.>>109078356I'm a senior dev at a small company in Atlanta and we are planning on hiring a new C# dev soon. >>109080156vro really thought that interviewing meant he was guaranteed an offer and he blogged about it every other day for weeks
>>109080261>do you have experience with other C#/.net stuff? Not entirely sure what you mean by other .net dev stuff, as most of the .net ecosystem is focused on framework and model view controller architectures and unity/game development but If you mean the tooling that comes standard with most .net projects for backend work. like entity framework, LinQ, RabbitMQ, and caching. Then yes, I am knowledgeable in all of these topics. Most frontend work I did was through either an ASP.net MVC application backend that handled the builder logic for my backend controller that generates a SSR on whatever server port I wanted. I also used JS for writing client side rendering pages instead by using a static html instead of CShtml generating dynamically on the controller application. In any of these applications I would have used something like entity framework for any CRUD operations. I'm not sure if this is the type of stuff that you do.

>>109083621Keep in mind a lot of HN is San Francisco centric, so expect a lot of Chinese nationals.

>>109082004Identifying a gap in the market is a totally different skillset from writing code. And marketing is yet another skillset.
>>109079988I've been a professional programmer for 10 years now. I'm sorry to hear you got rejected.I wanted to offer some perspective that may or may not be helpful: do not take rejections personally.I've seen a lot of people around me over the years wonder how they could have been rejected after performing so well in an interview. The answer is that someone in the hiring chain could have just been having a shitty day, like they spilled coffee on themselves that morning. The "science" behind doing tech interviews is bullshit and falls apart because of the human elements, which, as someone with a more technical brain, is a pretty frustrating notion.Come as you are and if possible apply to places where you like the people. Treat yourself well and think of yourself highly. Drop out of interview processes if the vibes are bad.I'm rooting for you, Anon!
>>109083641That's a good point. Even the ones that aren't Chinese nationals might be sort of anti-America, too
>>109083621its absolutely everywhereits such retarded shit too like "HoOoo gwailo deed yooh knoww dat 99 pahcent of chinese own they own home ?"(average "home" size in china is literally 500 sq feet)

>>109083704Lately the discussion around open source LLMs has been amusing. It seems most of the commenters believe the Chinese labs are producing these models out of the goodness of their hearts and a genuine belief in open models, no ulterior motives attached

>>109084012what's wrong with that honestly?I see so much garbage being pushed through, forcing pair programming would unironically improve the chances at this point. no one actually does code review.
>>109084030It's actually very inconvenient against productivity.
>>109084070Wasting senior programmers on pairing destroys anything getting done if everyday is just pairing. It's exhausting too.
>>109084076good. you retards with your title inflation just produce dogshit anyway. I still don't see the issue. if you're truly senior level(tm) you have a duty to train juniors anyway. still not seeing the problem.
>>109084080>I'm unable to work on my own, please do my work for me while I slack off and make money easilyNo I dont think I will. Also, they're making seniors pair together. We hardly have juniors here.
>>109083621>>109083641>>109083704Hardcore Chinese nationalists rarely speak English, and most English speaking Chinese are wannabe defectors who shit on China online and praise America (hence they learn English). If you see English speakers shitting on America and praising China, you’re seeing the American equivalent wannabe defectors who hate their own country and want the perceived other side to win.
