Whats your average pass rate from initial HR interview to technical test?
I have a degree and 5+ years of experience. Ive been applying to only relevant postions and aiming for 50 applications/week. From these 50 i tend to get 4-5 interviews with HR, so around 10% pass rate.
Now im getting stuck at this initial contact since i go to the 2nd inteview once every 20 initial HR attempts.

I even started recording myself and compared to some mock interviews from youtube but i dont find anything wrong.

I got rejected.
I'm completely at a loss. In every other interview I've known where I fucked up or what I said wrong. Not this time. Through the two rounds I had, they went down the entire list - classes, extensions, protocols (interfaces), property wrappers, attributes, macros, concurrency (both GCD and async / await), memory management, architecture patterns, etc.
I was able to answer 90-95% of the questions correctly and did well on the live coding. I also got along great with both of the interviewers I had.
I guess I just have to be perfect. I'm still going to be interviewing with another team but starting all over again and waiting weeks between rounds, especially when I did so well here, is crushing.

The interview format was different compared to every other interview I've gone through. They started off by asking easy questions and kept making them more difficult until I couldn't answer. Like in the first interview the live coding question was "do you know what a set is" and then by the second interview at the end they were asking me in which scenarios the compiler vs the runtime handles memory allocation / deallocation, how obj-c interoperability works with swift, how GCD handles posix thread scheduling in C. What's the best way to test skills and aptitude in an interview in the age of AI? I'm going to be interviewing candidates soon and we used to do a take home programming challenge and then an in person code review. It was a MUCH better indicator of potential than DSA/logic puzzles ever were, and it so acted as a filter for people who literally couldn't make code compile (surprisingly common). Now anybody can complete the challenge in 10 minutes with one prompt. We don't actually have an issue with AI usage in and of itself, but we've also found from past hires that vibe coders generally can't hang when something requires critical thinking and can't just be prompted.

Not entirely sure what you mean by other .net dev stuff, as most of the .net ecosystem is focused on framework and model view controller architectures and unity/game development but If you mean the tooling that comes standard with most .net projects for backend work. like entity framework, LinQ, RabbitMQ, and caching. Then yes, I am knowledgeable in all of these topics. Most frontend work I did was through either an ASP.net MVC application backend that handled the builder logic for my backend controller that generates a SSR on whatever server port I wanted. I also used JS for writing client side rendering pages instead by using a static html instead of CShtml generating dynamically on the controller application. In any of these applications I would have used something like entity framework for any CRUD operations. I'm not sure if this is the type of stuff that you do.

I was a senior software engineer and got laid off last july. I haven't had any offers in all that time. I keep wishing software companies would come to their senses on AI but that's not happening.
I'm trying to figure out something to pivot to that won't be replaced by AI. It all seems so hopeless - either the pay is shit, or I need a degree. And I dropped out of college, so don't have any degree to use as a stepping stone.

I've been a professional programmer for 10 years now. I'm sorry to hear you got rejected.
I wanted to offer some perspective that may or may not be helpful: do not take rejections personally.
I've seen a lot of people around me over the years wonder how they could have been rejected after performing so well in an interview.
The answer is that someone in the hiring chain could have just been having a shitty day, like they spilled coffee on themselves that morning. The "science" behind doing tech interviews is bullshit and falls apart because of the human elements, which, as someone with a more technical brain, is a pretty frustrating notion.
Come as you are and if possible apply to places where you like the people. Treat yourself well and think of yourself highly. Drop out of interview processes if the vibes are bad.
