this guy is deaf and so are most of the commentors but yeah
just listen to the difference between hotswap, mill max and solder builds
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zesmRX2icTk
how the fuck does solder sound THAT much deeper than mill max? in his older vids he used 0305s and 7305s which have taller lips than the modern 3305
the Chinee ones (chill max or something else idk) are even thinner than 3305s, probably sounds like a solder switch on PCBs that fit it
>>
>>109080211
It's subtle but yea there's an audible difference. As for why, my bet is just "it's complicated". The mass & type of materials used changes in each case, and the PCB itself varies between hotswap & solder versions. Nailing down precisely why these audible differences occur would probably require the kind of analysis that no one can be assed to do.
>>
>>109080314
it's quite far from subtle on my audiophool IEMs
hotswap is just thin and tinny in comparison to solder
mill max is better but again, just doesn't compare to solder, the spacebar alone tells it
guarantee it's due to those boomer mill max sockets he used with thick lips that prevents switches from staying flat and tight against the PCB
>>
>same switches
>same keycaps
>PCB variations are minimized (they're all the same base FR4/thickness)
it's literally the sockets anon
a hotswap socket/thick lipped mill max just don't hold the switch against the PCB as firmly as solder

Base sets should always come with the numpad + F row. Extras should always be novelties, alts, international kits or uncommon layout accomodations. Stop fleecing people for not using a 60%.

>>
>>109084276
Nop, F122. The B122 wouldn't be as ergonomic with it's breadbox case. The F122 I'll be able to comfortably use with a wrist rest.
>>
>>109085316
Can't you just use a taller wristrest though
I don't get the point of buying a model F in this day and age when the guy has perfected new beamspring switches
>>
>>109085382
>Can't you just use a taller wristrest though
That won't help with the gigantic bottom lip his B122 has compared to the F122. Plus I like the classic beige look of the F122 a little more. Though I wonder if he corrected the issue of paint wear from the F62/F77 or if I need to clear coat it myself.
>>
>>109085454
You can choose a beige B122 case. But yeah, the bottom lip is fair enough.
>paint wear
I have an F77 and I haven't had any issues in the last few years. I does feel like if I seriously fucked it up it could scratch the pain, but it's not just wearing off on its own or anything.
>>
>>109085475
>You can choose a beige B122 case
Yeah but the shape and the keycaps won't match the same look of the F122 that looks like an old school Model M on steroids. Plus the Model F assembly makes it slimmer. Maybe I'll get a B122 at some point, his project has been almost ending for years now and it's not like people'll buy out all of these any time soon. Over $500 a pop with all the caveats of ordering from Joe doesn't exactly make these a hot seller.

For now a buckling spring will be fine. My only mechanical keyboard up to this point is the K70 on MX Browns I'm using right now so even an F122 will be a cosmic jump.
>>
How hard is soldering a keyboard? Would it be a bad first project? I bought a Pinecil and some solder a while back but haven't used it yet.
>>
What do linear switches do, besides hot swapping, that rubber domes don't do?
>>
>>109085502
Start with something simpler. My first practical soldering project with a Pinecil was MMCX modding KSC75's and making a DIY motherboard beeper, simple stuff. Two wires, four joints. Even though they needed a lot of precision.
>>
>>109085488
>so even an F122 will be a cosmic jump.
Yeah that's fair. I'm just of the mentality that there's no point in buying an expensive middle-ground and then spending money again to buy the better option anyway, might as well just go straight to the top. But if you want buckling springs and just prefer the design of the model Fs then yeah sure

>>109085502
Just the switches, or all the SMD components too? Switches is very easy. SMD components are not hard either as long as you have a flux pen, but I'd consider buying one of those "training PCBs" for a couple of bucks from the chinks just to try your hand at it before the real board.
>>
>>109085513
Have a linear force curve
I'm not being an ass here, linear switches are completely different from rubber domes. Tactiles like browns are much more similar to rubber domes (though still with significant differences in the force curve shape), and by extension clickies too since they're basically just tactiles except louder and with more hysteresis. Linears are about as different as you can get

MX ergo launch model. Well worn now. Stripped the rubber and replaced it with a cork mat. Thinking of switching to a finger ball. Wanted to buy gameball but it's way too expensive and I don't even know if I'll like it. Waiting on protarc's new trackball.

MX Master 3S. Too bad it has no built-in memory or the ability to work wired but it's mega comfy and the magnetic scroll wheel is GOATed, way better than what's on the G502. I could use a secondary gayming wirless mouse but idk what ergo shape would be fitting now that I am used to the MX Master.

after month of using huge plus:
- It cannot replace a mouse for me, too slow and not enough buttons
- its really nice to use after first awkward week
- bearings are good for precise movement but are really noisy. they are rattling like crazy with faster movements
- battery life, 2,4ghz performance and software are unexpectedly stable, no issues for me
- does not require cleaning too often
- scroll wheel is hard to get used too,
- middle mouse click and moving around with ball is just impossible, u have to assign middle click to something else if u need that for 2d cads
- first week or two felt bad for my wrist, after that i think its more comfy than normal mouse

Overall im really happy, still using mouse if i need to be fast for work stuf but with every day more and more stuff is done with trackball. With buttons i really need to look for something like keypad or gtaphics tablet remote to assign macros from my aerox 9 to that, without them im really slow wity my work if im using trackball

hello frens. thirdworlder here (south america btw) who wants to build his first keyboard. how can i get these keyboard part thingies without getting raped by shipping prices? maybe im retarded but i can only find that one nexttime75 pcb in aliexpress. and almost all other keyboard pages that i find have ridiculous shipping prices lol. i dont mind if this shit arrives in my country in a month, so please help me lol
>>
>>109091814
yeah you either order from china or from a local shop/seller (which may not exist)
there's a bunch of different shit on aliexpress, both PCBs and switches and everything. but mind you some enthusiasts only sell their own keyboards on their own storefront, e.g. if you want a very specific PCB for some meme build. popular ones often get cloned by chinks (e.g. you can definitely buy Corne pcbs on aliexpress). but not everything

you can also look into custom pcb printing, like jlcpcb, they can ship from china and so maybe it can be easy, if you want to build some niche keyboard that has open-source files

then I'd say corne is the best default option. there's tons of variants on aliexpress, find a choc hotswap one with the features you want (hotswap? screens on the halves? wireless? you can probably find it) so you can experiment with different choc switches
the one thing i'm not sure about is whether choc v1 or v2 is better (and they're usually not compatible with each other)
>>
What are the current good lightweight MX linear switches? Ideally silent, it's gonna be a work keyboard. I've got an old set of Boba UT4 which as far as I know are still among the best tactiles (especially silent tactiles), but I'm not sure if I want to use tactiles or linears.
