Hmm maybe I should check in on the sbc community and see what cool fun things I can do while everything else is probitively expensive.....oh

There has to be a way to turn my old phones into PCs by now
>>
>>109080770
why are you poor? too stupid and/or lazy to succeed? lol

99% of the price is the RAM

8gb ram raspberry pi5 is like $200 since 2022
>>
>>109081180
How much is a 8GB orange pi?
>>
macbook neo costs $600 and is an sbc

Nope. Locked proprietary hardware with locked proprietary drivers with locked proprietary boot loader....
You get the idea...

Old Motorolas should be ok if they were ever supported by any alt-OS
>>
Maybe soon we'll see a return to better more efficient code?

Look up device compatibility with droidian or postmarketOS. Or just use termux. I've been trying to put together a power supply for an old phone of mine that plugs into the BMS replacing the battery. Got it to boot but shuts down when opening apps.

one of my coworkers is a kid who just graduated high school and wants to study cs, so i suggested he get a pi zero 2 w to play with since its an inconsequential, cheap, radio-enabled linux computer with gpio and a decently established knowledge base so shit will be easy to search for when he breaks it. lo and behold its literally impossible to buy one for a reasonable price because of the commercial demand for it. im kinda tempted to preorder 10 of em for when theyre back in stock just to have some around.

Samsung Dex still works

and many more hit lines from memory manufacturers stocks holders

Don't look up the current cost of the Raspberry Pi whatever you do.
It's honestly all so disheartening. AI has killed the entire SBC industry.
>>
>>109081223
But it only has 8 GB of RAM. That Orange Pi has 4x as much RAM as the iToy.

Cut off the little protection circuit that that phone battery has, and connect your power supply to it. I've even used it with a peeled off usb cable with a couple diodes to drop the voltage and it works and I haven't fried the phone so far.

there is nothing worth doing on a computer that requires more than 4gb of ram

Kek. You're funny, anon.

Brutal RAMlet cope.
>>
>>109080770
Yeah, SBC are not by any means a "good deal" rn. Not just on your Orange Pi 6 "NPU" unit, across the board. The one you pictured is meant for foundational AI work (not running LLM) and the 32G DDR5 RAM is absolutely the cost driver on that thing.
That said, all the SBC (RPi, OPi, etc.) are more expensive now, and widely out of stock. I've started doing more with ewaste-tier computers with DDR3 tier memory, since those are still basically free, for hobby stuff.
I just picked up a Dell DFF with 3rd gen i5 and 8G DDR3 for $20 locally, and set it up as a NAS with an old 1T HDD. Before price escalation, I'd have used an OPi 3B and stuck a 1T SSD M2 drive in it.

8gb ddr4 is 25€ I dont believe that ram is that expansive.

>>109081180
I'm thinking about selling mine.. I have a rpi4 and a 5 both 8GB
>>
>>109081180
I bought mine for like 60 bucks when they came out and its been sitting in a drawer since kek
>>
at this point it's better to just buy these tiny x86 pcs on
marketplace for a fraction of that
>>
>>109085695
>>109085298
I sold all my extra Rpi during Covid lol, replacing them with cheap Orange pi. Now those are expensive too.

I tested 4 GB of ram. It took 9 GB of ram plus swap to launch Grand Theft Auto IV on steam. This was on Arch with LXQt.
>>
>>109084920
how do you open 4khan with under 1 giggy
>>
odroid h5 is $300 and it's a x86 sbc with with 10GbE and quad m.2, uses like 3W of power in idle. Fucking perfect for a server.

These are the new meta for any RPi network toy project.
> ewaste tier, nearly free, $20 on local marketplace
> abundant and everywhere, always more b/c corporate 2-3 year refresh cycle creates more ewaste by the pallet load
> solid power supplies
> Use actual SSD/HDD vs. SD cards
> replacement parts are abundant and cheap
Cons
> Not small, not ideal for robotics
> slightly higher power usage
