Hi Anon,

I'm a dumb IT Field Support monkey. What I lack in intelligence I try to make up for it with dedication and will. I am a very hard working IT monkey and make sure to properly detail and close all my tickets. I am asking for your help because I want to learn how to get started in cybersecurity to escape the bottom role that I am in and had a few questions.

you need good peers. i second getting a job at a NOC. meet interesting people at a datacenter and just build something you find interesting, you will learn the most in that process and your own motivation will come from your interest. projects give you something to reflect upon naturally in interviews. leverage ai to help you learn, don't use it as a crutch.

skim hackernews on ycombinator, get a mastodon account, check out ieee, owasp, watch defcon shit during lunch

stay in help desk a while. learn networking and servers until you can move up. stay there for a while. download offensive and defensive security tools. learn to attack and defend. do that until you have areas you specialize in. then move to security.

learn as much as you can

no. I don't recommend certs unless your employer is paying for it. this isn't a ticket, but if you're on help desk you should know how to google. do some digging and learn to teach yourself. this will be the most valuable skill you can gain.
