>be me
>autistic teenager
>get really good at computers
>like, really strangely good for a teenager
>write crazy shit
>get tired of programming for the sake of it
>get older
>major in other type of engineering
>cooler, still get to program to model mathy stuff, people love me for it
>see SWE salaries
>see what they do get the job
>fuck i could do that
>i fucking hate that industry
>i fucking love this other type of engineering
>fuck, i am still good at computers though
>fuck, thats a lot of money

I honestly hate this choice. Why can't society just value the physical world more?

similar path except i'm now a senior sw engineer.
the pay is good, but the job is soul killing, i don't think i've worked at a single company that produced anything of value in my whole career.

now i'm starting to get into midi hardware as a hobby and maybe will make a company out of it who knows.

I haven't hit the job market yet, i still have time.

What the fuck do i do? I try and drive myself towards the light but then my family is all fucked up and i realize what financial security also means.

when is the part of the story where einstein shakes your hand and everybody claps
>>
>>109082792
well not fully, i guess i sort of have some experience already

People who are "good with computers" are a dime a dozen. That is the calling of something who goes into IT. Go setup SSO for your local school district. If you are good at math and enjoy programming you will have success in this field. Hiring managers can see through your lies if you dont actually enjoy your work.

I have a very similar story. The field of engineering I went into also usually has way worse wlb than swe and is mostly only present at the most expensive and soulless cities. It would have been way easier to become a swe and would be livibg a better life.

it isn't gated by talent, being smart means nothing, either you can do it or you can't (you can't and won't)
>>
>>109083407
>>109085765
like i said they already like me, i could probably go into both because I did a bunch of work during college
>>
>>109083407
and no, i genuinely was writing compilers for fun when i was a teenager but i never thought of this as a career but its what i always get hired for and its a fuck ton more money if i decide not to what i actually think is cool and dreamed of doing since forever
>>
>>109086150
"writing compilers" is a completely useless skill in a real job, sorry
>>
>>109086192
yeah obviously dumbass i write other stuff too
>>
>>109082703
Similar path here, but I'm kind of glad to not be doing swe right now as the AI transition feels like the most soul crushing thing ever.
>>
>>109086233
Yeah really, good fucking luck replacing me. I could still probably be ridiculously wealthy when adjusting for COL but i don't want to do live in fucking Houston, maybe i should stop complaining my life is kind of awesome lol.

"Money In Computers"
That requires getting an acceptance letter, something that has been definitively proven to be impossible

none of this ever happened its just a zesty fantasy
>>
If you were really (like, really strangely good) good at computers you would already be rich and wouldn't be making stupid threads
>>
>>109087641
no it really did, i was a very obsessive teenager lol, its part of the reason i decided to major in something else i figured i should probably learn to do something else lol
>>
>>109087786
I'm not crazy cracked compared to SWE's these days I just had a really large head start and then ended up about where people who studied this in college are
>>
>>109087786
>>109087795
and then during college i could adapt all the physics/chemistry/etc into computer models about as fast as they taught it to me because of my strong programming background and i got some odd work because "hey this kid is pretty smart I'm sure they will save our ass here" and now I am wondering why the hell I don't just become a SWE at this point even though its never really what I had in mind
>>
>>109087870
well mostly it was because i was a lot cheaper than a real programmer and happened to be in the vicinity but it was still really fucking cool and good experience lol
>>
>>109087795
*i ended up where CS grads are by the time i graduated college
>>
>>109082703
try sucking cock for money and becoming a good human who actually gives a shit about the world
