It was the only mobile UI that wasn't just a copy of Palm OS that was a copy of Apple Newton that was a copy of every single early icon based OS crammed into a PDA, which was a copy of Xerox Alto.I mean technically it still had icons, but they just looked like tiles instead, which was still a pretty large distinctive step.

It was more like a successor to BlackberryOS in that was more cohesively designed instead of just a jumble of random apps. The problem was that the app ecosystem wast nearly fleshed out and Microsoft had zero interest/success in getting people to develop apps for it. The hardware was good. Some of the handsets were nearly identical hardware to the Android version.
