AC is killing the planet

If you watched the video at all, he says to use AC AND a ceiling fan.
>>
>>109083686
That is what I used before watching his video. Is it not obvious?
Although good AC system does not require a separate fan. A fan makes sense for circulating the air in the winter though, for dispersing the warm air pockets near ceiling. Unless in your climate winter is mild you can run AC in heating mode.
>>
>>109083640
It will, but only if the air is dry. If it's damp, it does close to nothing.

I might actually die there. The fuck is this climate? Africa?

What is the point of having it when all you got is 24C?
I usually have +19 indoors with aircon. No matter winter or summer.
>>109084719
Same here, I guess it is shifted to the colder side over here.
>>109085233
>I just bought an airco last week.., it's 24.8 inside now
Again. How do function when it's 25, you're just being naked all the time or something?
Also consider like 5kW worth of solar, purely for running aircon during summer.
But it works best with inverter compressor powered aircon, as it can sip as little as 400W, so should function even on cloudy days. As opposed to those that go on-off and demand 1,5-2kW.
>>
>>109085378

24 is a comfy indoor temperature when it's hot outdoors. You're wearing shorts and a t-shirt anyway in that weather, and having a slightly warmer temp indoors means it doesn't feel like you're walking into a walk in freezer when you get inside.

The problem with fans is that they just keep circulating hot air in the room. Hot air rises and it needs to be guided further up out of the room and towards the top of the house, then to the outside.
>>
>>109083697
He also mentioned "heat fans".
I live in a fairy cold climate but nobody does that here, but then our ceilings tend to be quite low which I guess is another way of achieving the same.

I don't think it makes any difference assuming the whole neighborhood has solar and on-off air conditioners.
I mean it all evens out on the grid.

Energy companies might charge you for using the grid though.
>>
>>109083714
>he also points out there are a whole bunch of shitty ceiling fans that are basically decorative.
And I disagree because even the slightest breeze makes a big difference (which he also mentioned).
A strong fan can also get annoying: I get dry eyes from constant airflow and don't like the constant noise.
I usually run my ceiling fan in reverse at the slowest setting, which is enough to prevent sitting in my own sweat vapors and body heat.

>>109085828
Persian meme. Windcatcher or watever.
Forget about this shit. The only good system that brings in fresh air is the one that is basically aircon + recuperation. Afaik, that is the new standard for new houses. Central aircon unit, recuperation, ventilation. Does both cooling and heating in the winter. All in one.
But it's a first world country thing. Nowhere to find in my shithole, I'll have to do it myself.

Dryness of the air is only relevant to the extent that the air will cool down quickly when the sun goes down. If it's 95F outside and 80F inside in the middle of the day blowing air inside will not cool you down at all.

i'm seeing models for $750 with different kinds of wood for the fan blades.

anyway, if you follow his logic in the video (that the hunter lasts far longer than a typical ceiling fan and could result in better energy savings if you assume better cooling = less AC usage), there's possibly a case to be made for the hunter being more cost effective over its lifespan vs buying several cheaper fans over the same time frame.

haven't hashed out the math myself though, and desu im sure you could find a cheaper, modern fan which performs just as well and is much more energy efficient if you did a bit of looking. so much of the seething around modern appliances boils down to consumers being uninformed retards who seek out the cheapest garbage they can find

It is relevant, your skin is moist, blowing air over it acts like evaporative cooling system. Because it fucking is. You are a stinky bastard, just like every other human because of this mechanism. Only humans sweat as much. That why humans don't have furr. To sweat more and evaporate more sweat.
>>
>>109085792
25 is when it is impossible to be productive, 22-24 is bearable only if you are naked (indoors, not exposed to sun, obviously).
18 is when you decide to wear somethin with long or short sleeves depending on your activity. For just reading a book +18 and wearing T-shirt might be cold, but cleaning up the house or other kind of labor would be optimal with +18.
15 requires a jacket only if it's windy. Because wind will drop your temp way below 15, by evaporating sweat.

Not incorrect. AC takes a colossal amount of electricity and many cultures, especially Americans, are absolutely mental about running it 24/7 at arctic temperature settings. All but the most extreme cooling needs can be done just fine with just a fan.
Or be civilized and install solar panels and run AC at your leisure.
>>
>>109083705
There's a massive heat wave in Europe right now that exposes those weak Westerners to Mediterranean temperature, but here in Greece those temps are normal, it's 33 with 50% moisture right now.
Although we're hit particularly hard by climate change since we're closer to the equator. 40+ Augusts used to be rare but they're now normal. We're hitting 30+ earlier and earlier in Spring and fruits flower and mature 1-2 weeks earlier than they are supposed to.

I keep my house around 70 degrees year round. That is not arctic or extreme. Solar isnt practical everywhere. Where I live in the midwest, it would take roughly ~20k worth of panels to fully power my home. Batteries would be an additional ~25k, and you will need them since we dont get enough sun. The ROI for solar just isnt there. Ive never seen a power bill above $250 and its usually quite a bit less. My HVAC is 17 years old and not particularly efficient either. Switching to Geothermal would be a way better ROI since you get benefits from it 24/7 365. However, the retrofit cost would be similar to solar. At the end of the day, you are just prepaying for your power, and $45000 will cover a a $250 or less bill for a long time.

>AC takes a colossal amount of electricity
But it doesn't really unless you create a stupid ass situation, e.g. greenhouse with no shading or uninsulated metal box.

European SEER should now be 6+ something for split ACs including even mobile units, 8+ for the top installations.

In many situations you could probably cool one room or the next few rooms down 10C no problem with like 3 400Wp solar panels attached to / above a balcony or something like that because most likely you anyhow only use 200-300W or w/e average on the AC.
>>
>>109090328
> in the midwest, it would take roughly ~20k worth of panels to fully power my home
> Ive never seen a power bill above $250
that makes no sense whatsoever.

if you use like 1500kWh per month or whatever those $250 were when you measured them then with basic ass 400Wp solar panels that produce 30 to 55 kWh each per month then you at most install 50 panels at ~$250 each (not a cheap price, the panels themselves are like $150 each on a not terribly good offer, the other $100 each are for mounting them which really shouldn't take long or very expensive mounting hardware per panel plus the inverter cost share). then that's 12.5k for the lower 30kW number and you probably have too much power most of the time.

What's your average electricity cost? Even over 15y, $150/month is 27k, but solar setups last 25y+. Either the full or a somewhat downsized setup that remains grid connected probably is quite efficient if you actually have some consumption.

a swamp cooler is better.
a fan just moves air around, but a swamp cooler moves around cool water particles through the air, cooling the room more.

the temp outside can be 100+ degrees ferenheit, and inside feel like the inside of a really cold fridge.

and its easier to maintain too.
the parts are simple:
motor to move the drumfan
a band to connect the drumfan to motor
water pump to move the water
filer to retain the water and cool it as air passes through
and occasional oiling of the fans contact points so it doesn't squeak too much.

maintenance is cheap and easy to do, way more than an AC, and if every room is connected to a central duct system, it can cool the whole house, from one, easy to maintain swamp cooler.

To be fair, in China, property is one of the only things you can actually legally 'own' and invest in. Those huge Ghost Cities you see are only there because it's one of the only ways someone in China can invest money like this weird, pseudo ponzi scheme real estate market that only grows because it's the only thing there is.
So people will "own" a $50 ghost apartment in Bumfuck, Hubei that they don't actually live in and is little more than a cement husk just because it's one of the few forms of wealth you can actually own.

Hm, if you have old PC radator (tower), you place it upside down, so that fac can blow through fins, then you place metallic reservoir on top, inside you pour some water and drop your ice. Optionally cover it (wrap the top of your cup with food grade plastic or smth) to avoid humidity.
Air flow should heat the radiator, cold water on top would slurp all that thermal energy until gets to room temp.
Best I can do with fuken ice. Not sure if heat pipes would kick in though. They probably have some minimal operational temp, which room temp might not be.

what the swamp cooler does is use the cool water that is circulating through the filter and sucks the air in quickly, cooling it in the process (fast air cools)
so even if your region is humid the swamp cooler will still cool your place.

that's how fans work

so long as the air is stagnant/not moving, heat accumulates, if it moves it cools, the faster it moves, the colder it gets, because the heat is dissipating and being shed off to the more static elements.

They are significantly larger than floor fans, so they can move a lot more air. This means at slower speeds you still get more air movement but they are basically silent. If you crank them up to high speed they will move huge amounts air at the cost of some noise. Though good fans are still silent at high speed and you'll only hear the moving air. By having them on the ceiling they dont take up space in the room. The idea is to mix all the air up so there isnt a pool of hot air at the ceiling. This is especially helpful in rooms like bedrooms where the ceiling is rather low.

Based math denying retard pulling numbers out of their ass. You're not supposed to go offgrid with solar if you have access to the power grid. So no need for batteries and panels are basically free out of China right now.

>>
>>109093604
Half measures are even more pointless. Plus, by targeting full off grid, you do have the potential to sell extra power back to the power company. Slapping up a couple chink panels to save $5 is a waste of time and effort
>>
>>109093680
Targeting full off grid means you have to massively oversize your panel array and you need batteries. Just get a big enough panel array and you can still sell back when it's sunny and you're not charging your car or doing something else that can suck in all the power. Also selling power back to the grid is usually a really bad deal, so the more you can use yourself the better the ROI is.

You probably don't actually want the hot air hanging out up there.
But, unless you have like a 20 foot ceiling, you're not going to have that much of a temperature gradient between floor and ceiling anyway.

Whoops, I misunderstood.

I've been pretty interested in off-grid solar AC myself. With modern variable speed mini split systems, I imagine it's pretty easy to do nowadays.

>>
>>109095760
Yes, it is easy. Even easy enough to do sort-of ad-hoc the entire system for a weekend or season and then put it away in a shed again.

E.g. you COULD literally use 2-4 free standing panels, set them up on stands or wooden poles or w/e in 10 minutes in your garden, run the cables to inverter with say 4kWh-ish battery in some box, then run a power plug in your window where a mobile split AC is hanging out and power it that way.

The only caveat there is that some of the premade camping power "solar generator" battery-mppt-inverters all in ones have only like 600Wp solar in. Well yes, maybe not those, unless you want to minimalism and rotate panels manually etc. Either get better models o spend like $300 on a mppt+inverter that can handle the whole 2-4x400Wp panels (or whatever you aim for, maybe you also want to have yet more power for some other stuff).

Of course most people will just set up the panels more permanently somewhere, but the point is it's not hard if you have a place to put them.

What about air pumps?
>>
>>109097634
air blowing over you and evaporating your sweat/carrying some additional heat away otherwise is making you feel cooler

if you have an installation going through a thermal mass that acts like a heat exchanger (and be it just a tube running though a longer stretch of ground) it's better if it operates passively, e.g. cold air gets pulled though it because hot air escaping elsewhere pulled it in with no extra power needed.

but split AC is fine. again for a not stupidly unshaded room or even an apt it's on the level of power consumption that you can supply with just a few solar panels anyhow... or a few kWh on the grid. well yes if you burn coal for that in the grid that sucks and you should get solar. if it's hydro power or nuclear then it's "actually who cares about a few kWh per day in peak summer"

>>
>>109083631
People do need to start learning to set their ac to 72-76 in the summer simply so they can actually have a something of a heat tolerance and enjoy the outdoors. It's not healthy to live in a climate that's routinely 85+ in the summer and be in 65 degree air all day. That's retarded.
>>
>>109083640
Unironically moving the air does a lot. Yea, that air will stay at 34c, but since it's cooler than your body it will cool you off. If the air is stagnant then there is far less heat exchange between you and the air.

This. AC should only serve to take the edge off. You only need full power when you're lifting weights, et cetera.

Better yet, just get a dehumidifier and let the house warm up.
