i'll hand you global themes being shit in their current form but just allowing, supporting and encouraging themes beats 'dont theme my apps' bitchfitting. KDE knows it's charmingly jank while Ebussy pretends to be Steve Jobs with nothing to show for it. People laugh at Apple users but Gnome is like a deliberate parody of everything people hate about macOS and Apple. It's just a sick joke played by Red Hat and IBM, frankly
>>
>>109093735
Quality third party themes exist for GNOME, e.g. Yaru. But GNOME looks good out of the box, whereas Breeze looks jank and every global theme makes it even worse. There is hope with the Oxygen/Air revamp, but there are inconsistencies with those e.g. systray icons don't quite match the rest of the theme.
GNOME isn't perfect but it's the closest I've found. I can be productive in GNOME with zero tweaks, although if I'm plugged into a big external monitor I like having Tiling Assistant installed.
IMO KDE peaked with version 2 and 3, and it has never been the same since, whereas GNOME 50 has eclipsed every previous GNOME version.
>>
>>109094888
All of this literally only applies if you like hyper-modern setups, ie Windows 11/MacOS tier UX, which is what GNOME tries very hard to be. Not saying there's anything wrong with that, it's just generally suitable only for people that have literally 0 interest in how their setup looks or if it feels personal.
>>
>>109094900
I do care very much about the look and feel - it just so happens that I like the default look and feel of GNOME. Maybe I got lucky in that regard. All I change is the font, accent color and wallpaper, and I'm happy. I understand the appeal of KDE and like many of its apps, but most of >>109089791 are deal-breakers for me.

Serious question, is there a known quality difference between the Gnome and KDE teams? With the Red Hat funding, I'd expect Gnome to have better developers, but I'm not sure, Gnome are an odd bunch.

Whenever I see KDE trying to recruit developers, they're off to India, just use Windows at that point.

>>109096397
they released the update earlier today. do a sudo dnf update and reboot and you should be good to go.

That being said, however great 6.5 and 6.6 has been? Whatever goodwill they had is gone. It has been such an unstable experience.

I may have to switch to Debian. Like I use Fedora because of work, but I am making a Debian USB as I type this, because Fedora has gone from being a nice usable OS to some pseudo rolling release garbage tier shithole. You never see a Debian user crying over bugs.
>>
>>109083674
KDE Devs probably:
>hey lets fix one bug nobody gives a fuck about but break everything else in the process!
>Don't update til like 6.7.1 bro
>what do you think of 6.7?
Has it ever occurred to you to NOT release alpha level software as production ready software?
>>
>>109096356
And yet Hide Top Bar extension works perfectly, including pass-through of GNOME shell hotkeys e.g. Win+S for Quick Settings.
And if you use a sane distro e.g. Debian you get it packaged as a system extension installable with your package manager, meaning that your distro takes care of compatibility and integration.
Even if shell extensions aren't ideal, it's still a way better overall UX than Plasma.
>>
>>109096438
No one cares anymore, it’s just ‘move fast and break things’. Ubuntu shipped rust coretools that they knew to be buggy and lacking 100% compatibility.

I think the shift in mentality comes from the influence of webdevs, there mistakes are cheap to fix, so it doesn’t matter if things break. Older devs come from the time where they couldn’t easily patch mistakes in real time (if at all) so more care and testing was employed to create a quality release.
>>
>>109096449
>it's still a way better overall UX than Plasma.
I prefer a Windows like interface to whatever Gnome wants to be, but after some tinkering with ‘Dash to Panel’ I was able to achieve what I wanted. It took care of the useless top-bar as well.
>>
>>109096457
I feel like an old man yelling at clouds at this point. I will just switch to Debian and let the retards be beta testers.
>>
>>109096473
I use RHEL at work because I am forced to use it, and this is what I did. It's nice because the it's gnome 49 so my addons work perfectly. At home I am using Fedora, thankfully 80% of my work is in the terminal, so losing KDE Plasma has been kind of a nonissue, gnome 50 is awful. I know I can install RHEL for free now. I am going to install Debian though, with gnome, and add a few addons. All I need is the ability to remote in and do shit via ssh.
>>
>>109096425
>Whatever goodwill they had is gone. It has been such an unstable experience
That's just KDE. It has been off the rails since KDE 4. I honestly get the impression that they do not have the skill to make a long term usable system.
>I may have to switch to Debian.
Based. I run Debian Sid and I love it. But start with Debian Stable as it is less buggy and recommended for non-developers.
>Fedora has gone from being a nice usable OS to some pseudo rolling release garbage tier shithole
You just got lucky previously. Fedora has always been aggressively on the frontier. Debian is much more conservative, even Debian Sid.
>You never see a Debian user crying over bugs
They exist, trust me. But it's still overall the best distro ever.
>>
>>109096473
Fair enough. I tried Dash to Panel for a while but hate how I kept accidentally opening Quick Settings while trying to use adjacent widgets. As for the top bar, I sometimes run Hide Top Bar when I want maximum real estate for my apps, but it turns out I subconsciously glace at the top bar a lot e.g. current time and to know which workspace I am on.
