You all wanted a discord alternative so why don’t (You) use XMPP?>open source >can be federated >many different clients for like any platform>a good amount of server software that can be selfhosted >a server will run on like every pc that came out in the last 25 years>easy to use just like email
i doubt my tech illiterate friends would join it, and if they did, i'd rather it just be irc

> Following the initial development phase, the funding from Amdocs was discontinued in 2017. At that time, the core development team left and established a UK-based company to independently steward the protocol. Today, it is overseen by the non-profit The Matrix.org Foundation.Seems like that foundation in charge of the protocol. I have no idea how israeli it is, but pretty sure it cannot get close to something like iMessage or Whatsapp
>>109084135I used it from 2011 to 2015 and it felt extremely dated even back then. In terms of modern communication and workflow it is stone age tech.
>>109084135I do, self-hosting snikket is super ez if anyone's interested
>>109084230Dont need telegram or shartrix when you have XMPP.
Aren't all these alternative platforms for pedophiles? Use IRC and well curated discords.

>>109086216I had success bringing several people over to matrix by removing my profile picture on D*scord, changing my name to DELETING MY ACCOUNT and messaging everybody on my contact list, and putting an explanation and my matrix contact in my bio. >>109084196>one-to-one chat production environment
>>109086200That's XMPP yes.
Open Discord.Explore it's feature set, how it operates, note exactly what's possible and how it is presented in the client. If your alternative does not have 1:1 feature parity, it's a failure. Can't be any more simple than this.
>>109086372Which alternatives have this feature?
>>109086372Yeah pretty much. This is the case with pretty much every alternative. It's why Bluesky overtook Mastodon in an instant when Musk bought Twitter. Granted Twitter is still much more popular than Bluesky obviously. But without the central location for discovering content, Bluesky would just be a more or less shitty alternative to Mastodon with few users.

>>109089231>XMPP is OSS so you can make a forkIt's a protocol, and it's xml, fucking xml! I want nothing with this cursed protocol. There's a reason no one seems to care about it, and most clients are shit, because xmpp is shit. It's not even an IM protocol per se, it's a general messaging protocol that can encode data in xml streams (!), the ideas are decent, but the implementation is bad and ugly, and every new feature seems like a hack on top of it, and let not address how most xml implementations are bad and buggy, because the full xml spec is the problem, which can be passable if used for marking text like it was meant to be, but retards decided that life should be marked in xml. IRC even if archaic is still the best IM protocol we have.
>>109089450imessage and whatsapp both started as xmpp so most of the worlds messages are still probably sent as xml
>>109084135Oh, It's this thread again>can be federatedDo you even know what that word means?Xmpp is a program that only two people use. One is the programmer who originally made it, the other is OP, you, who fanatically tout it every week or so on 4chan. You've been doing this for years. When you first started to do that, two people used Xmpp. Now, years later, two people use Xmpp. What does that tell you?
What the smallest an xmpp client can be executed in?IRC has sic which only needs 250 lines of code.
>>109090551SIC doesn't follow the IRC spec though, it just joins channels and chats as a novelty magic trick
can it do screensharing and group voice chat?
>>109084184have you seriously tried this , it's absolutely laughable how bad it is
>>109093417Not him, but yeah it's pretty bad. But also I think it's the least bad option we have for decentralized chat. Or as they say in Bri*ain, decentralised chat. I say that it's the least bad, because it's the only chat app that tries to do everything a person could want to do a chat app. Now, pay attention that I said "tries." I didn't say they do it well, but they're trying. But every year it seems to be getting better and better. And with the government contracts the devs are obtaining, the features they build for the governments may also spill into the open source versions.Other than XMPP and Matrix, I don't see any other chat apps/protocols trying to be the swiss army knife of chat.
>>109084135I fucking love XMPP but no one is on it. Even IRC is more active. Also what are these arguments about ITT? Either this board is full of retards or there's a glow-op going on.
>>109093618You could respond to the arguments, or just be a smug smarty boy alone on XMPP.
>>109084164Just point them to Snikket. If someone can create an email they can make an XMPP account.>>109093654We've had this thread before and the conclusion was Matrix is the new XMPP and it's falling for the same mistakes. So idk if there's much to say. People who would love XMPP are the same ones insisting on Matrix now. Except XMPP is like the email of chat. It's a protocol with enough extensions to do whatever you want with it.
>>109093968NTA but I learned about snikket last week and was completely put off by their website, literally go to the website right now and read how they describe it. It is the faggeiest description of software I have ever seen in my entire life. It's basically like a try not to cringe challenge trying to get through even 2 paragraphs written by the dev team which makes me worried it's run by trannies and it's going to rape my server or something. I genuinely cannot trust it because of how horrible the writing style on the website is. Is it actually good?
>>109094005I wouldn't know, I haven't used it. I'm suggesting recommending it to tech illiterate normies as a gateway drug if they want the most straightforward approach possible. Because they have an app that selects their server by default so all the user has to do is make an account. A similar app is yax.imBut yeah if you're trying to make your own server use prosody or smth.
>>109093968>Matrix is the new XMPP and it's falling for the same mistakes. That doesn't sound right at all. One thing off the top of my head, XMPP never had an organization behind it trying to push a flagship app and evangelize for it. Matrix does. It has the server and the client, and that lead developer guy is constantly fighting for it.>It's a protocol with enough extensions to do whatever you want with it.Matrix is just a protocol too.
for me it's sending a text (imessage)
>>109094005I've used a snikket server. All I got was a personalised link where I could sign up. So it's very easy to do.

Social networks need to be feature rich, and accessible. All the alternatives to discord and lacking in every single aspect of features and accessibility. There is no reason to change.
