HAM radios are technology indeed.
What does /g/ thing of them?

While not speaking on behalf of the entirely of /g/, I know it is discussed over in the /cyb/ general and also >>>/diy/ham, where there is a FAQ and a huge technical library.
>>
>>109085873
I have this model. It's great.
>>
>>109085873
Why can't I ever get anything on the CB band? Isn't it supposed to be super congested?
>>
>>109085873
So what can i do with this thats as good as internet?
>>
>>109086037
Is precisely because it's comgested that your getting nose
>>
>>109086002
I have same hardware in different plastic. It's better. This one is ugly and everyone knows it's baofend. It's like walking around with "small dick" written on your forehead. HAMfags would laught at you.

>BREAKER BREAKER GOOD BUBBY. 10-4 THIS IS TIGER HUNTER ROLLING DOWN HIGHWAY 1 LOOKING FOR SMOKEY. YYEEEEHHHAAAAAA
Ham radio is for homosexuals
>>
>>109085873
radios are kinda neat I guess but 90% of the discussions on them are just bored geriatrics talking about the new radio they got and/or whatever facebook told them that day
if I wanted to talk to randoms about dumb shit I would just hop on cs voice chat or something
>>
>>109086075
Use case for homosexuals?
>>
>>109086075
Perhaps around where you live. Where I live, most hams I know are ex-military guys.
>>
>>109086154

>>
>>109086275
>ex-military guys
So, gay?
>>
>>109085873
I like the idea, but in practice it's a politically correct nursing home.
>>
>>109087175
Tune to 7200 kHz, it's like boomer 4chan.
>>
>>109087192
thank you anon, this is great
>>
Ham, like visa (the one you need to get in order to enter some countries, not the credit card company), is not an acronym.
>>
>>109086042
well you can talk to other people worldwide. Problem is, for some fucking reason, it's gatekept by a loiscense if you want to broadcast and talk to these communities
>>
>>109087585
Have you ever been in a 4chan general where a single schizo shits it up and ruins the discussion driving everyone out? That's why it's gatekept. Unlike a 4chan thread where you can keep posting around someone being an annoying faggot if someone is holding up a frequency and jamming repeaters there's not much that can be done about it short of crying to the government and waiting for them to take care of it or hunting down their physical location and kicking their ass.
>>
>>109087486
Anon was shouting, not indicating an acronym
>>
By the way I don't want to give off the impression that I'm against unlicensed transmissions or I'm some government bootlicker. That's not true at all. But the way I see it those ham radio guys are playing a game with agreed upon rules. If you want to play with them you follow the rules. It keeps things from devolving into pure retardation like every other hobby space does. If you look into the shortwave pirate scene how many of those guys are also hams? However you feel about wanting the airwaves to be free etc you're in a much better position to pull these things off technically if you learn to follow the rules which getting your amateur radio license will force you to do. Then when you're doing pirate radio you can follow every single rule except having a license and you're less likely to get complaints about your operation causing the feds to kick down your door.

7200 reminds me a lot of lolcow culture. You got a group of trolls who rage baiting a few people who keep falling for it. I like putting it on as background noise when I work.
>picrel my free online SDR of choice
>>
>everybody into radio is all doom and gloom saying radio is dying, has no future, etc
>still costs hundreds of thousands to millions to get an AM or FM station
if it was crashing and burning id expect these to be cheap, so what gives
>>
>>109087777
You can actually get some AM stations pretty cheap. Good luck with the upkeep! Most of the time it's just done so they can get a FM translator on the air.
>>
>>109087777
Even if radio is dying, it doesn't make the equipment cost lower. Popular or not, building and maintaining a 200 foot tower and powering it with multiple kilowatts 24/7 isn't cheap, not to mention permitting being a nightmare.
>>
>>109087799
That's why in many cases the owners assess the situation and say to themselves "What is worth more, my land or my license?" In many cases the answer is the land which leads to AM stations going silent. Sad to see but so many of them haven't been broadcasting anything worth a shit in decades anyway. FM is still desired. The only FM stations I remember going silent in markets I lived in were because of a stubborn bankrupt owner who infamously refused to fold.

Based Baofengs, love going up to the mountains to talk my shit on 146.520MHz, you can get crazy distance as the crow flies.
>>
>>109085873
Only interesting during fire season. Otherwise, you're lucky to stumble across a couple geezers yakking about their antennas.
>>
>>109085873
I have some baofangs. A friend and I did a hamwan for some low speed LAN gaming. Didn't work great on anything newer than late '99 and early '00 games. Was pretty fun though.
>>
I bought a small one and was surprised there was absolutely fuck all on the air even though I live in a medium sized city. At least it's cool and only cost $20
>>
>>109087978
It's all about elevation, take a drive up to your local mountains to the point where you're looking down upon the urban sprawl, that's where you get crazy transmit and receive distance
>>
>>109087987
>TFW live in the Midwest so no mountains
I do live on the top (3rd) floor of the tallest building on my street though
>>
>>109087996
That's actually quite good, tune into 146.520, it's the simplex calling channel (simplex is radio to radio) they may not be happy about people calling without a license but it's still pretty funny.
>>
>>109088002
>they may not be happy about people calling without a license but it's still pretty funny.
do people that broadcast without a loiscense get curb-stomped by glowniggers or it's simply bullshit?
>>
>>109088026
The ham radio autists act like they're gonna track people down, but no one gives a shit, the fuckin pigs aren't gonna take a break from all the bullshit going on in cities to track down someone for saying nigger on a handheld FM radio.
>>
>>109086075
That cb radio you fucking retard.
>>109086061
Who gives a shit what the other end of the horseshoe thinks.
>>
>>109088036
I envy people that do this over at 'murica get scott free.
In concainumland if you broadcast without a loicense. Porkchops can literally confiscate your radio rig for their own shit's and giggles
>>
radio will never be a thing in low trust society
niggers keep doing copper theft
https://archive.is/PF72p
>>
>>109088106
Romanians do this as well
>>
>>109087680
The rules involve doxxing yourself in a publicly accessible database. Narc culture isn't the same as gatekeeping your hobby.
>>
>>109087680
I’ve been involved in multiple hobby scenes that got ruined by going mainstream.
Gatekeeping is good
>>
>>109087843
I heard in the 50mhz range you can cross country US, thousands of miles
Not always ofc, like freak incidents when conditions are right & from high sites
>>
>>109088026
They can track you down if you are a repeat offender.
A one off & you’ll be impossible to find
If there’s no complaint nobody will care

But they can & do find people who mess with their shit
>>
>>109088559
It's pretty based how the atmosphere propagates, especially with the super low freqs like 4MHz on the 75 meter band

>>109088571
This, you gotta be dedicated to doxxing yourself to get busted for operating without a license and jamming, the only known case of this is a schizo who got his license taken for jamming, and then continued to do the same schizo ass shit while identifying using the license that he got taken away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpllpB3aqMs
>>
>>109088484
Transmitting is doxxing yourself. Anyone can DF you. Don't expect radio to be like the glory hole at your local adult bookstore.
>>
>>109088613
Jokes on them, I'll have peeled the fuck out of wherever I was transmissing by the time they try and get me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZYQmsioKuc
>>
>>109088624
This is why the rules exist in the first place and I anticipated you would make a post like this.

>This sign says don't be an annoying faggot? I'm going to be the most annoying faggot of all time then hahhahaha I am such a winner!

Meanwhile most people who do unlicensed broadcasts don't bother anybody and might actually attract a following of people posting about them on hfunderground or asking for QSL cards. Nobody likes the retard with the Baofeng. As in you.
>>
>>109086037
I've been thinking about a CB radio, dunno if anyone would care to be on though.
I really wish I had some friends. into tech.
>>
>>109088613
Transmitting just means people know where my signal came from. It doesn't include my address or my name. It's pretty obvious hams are former high school hall monitors still demanding the right to identify and locate anyone they come across.
>>
>>109088748
Don't do ham radio then. Transmit on the CB band instead. It doesn't sound to me like you have a valid reason to be talking to these people anyway since you don't seem to like them. I wouldn't join a club of people I hate.
>>
Remember children, the radio spectrum is a finite resource. Much like your time on this earth is. Let's make up a dumb hypothetical. Imagine all your neighbors are hicks and their favorite radio station is B93.5. They turn on their radio and instead of hearing Morgan Wallen they hear you broadcasting overmodulated Burzum and Hitler speeches. Even if they're a bunch of stupid hicks they're over 9000 times more likely to complain about what you did than if you chose to do it on a clear frequency, amirite? The poor quality of your operation and choice of content would draw complaints eventually but interference with licensed operations will draw it instantly. Same goes for transmitting on the ham bands. What do you accomplish with that except saying haha I trolled some boomers? They're going to die soon anyway. Find something better to do with your time. Get good at this.
>>
>>109087152
No.
It is strange that ytou are so hung up about this. Projecting, perhaps?
>>
>>109085873
I have four Boof Wang UV-5Rs at home, with two being in my bugout kit.
Fuck the FCCs, I'll always broadcast whenever and wherever I want.
>>
>>109088870
Based, gotta keep that fang on you, they kick the crap out of those cucked 1 watt walkie talkies from the store, even more so when you put on the Nagoya 771G tuned for 462MHz or even the ABBREEE 18.8 incher (folded) on it.
>>
>>109088048
>we got a salty in the thread
>over
>>
>>109085873
Avenue of nerdery everyone thinks is cool, but maybe doesn't have enough personal interest to dive into.

>>109086002
I have a Retevis RT-5R which looks exactly like that but with "Retevis RT-5R" on the badges. Is it? I found it at the thrift store so it wasn't something I intentionally sought out after comparing brands and models.
>>
>>109088862
Yes, I'm pretty hung.
