I'm trying to decide what my new laptop should be. I was gonna go with Windows but Windows 11 is terrible and insanely annoying. I find it unusable. What is /g/ using. I already have a PC. The laptop will mostly be used outside of the house.

Debian Stable
Failing that, Windows 10 Enterprise IoT LTSC

Linux Mint? So much as the laptop isn't a Silicon MacBook, you can pretty much install any OS on any laptop to a certain degree. But Mint makes the most sense to me there imo, XFCE works well for that

Fair. I was gatekeeping for no good reason.

Switched everything except my phone over to linux last year. Haven't looked back.
Even with all the jank it's far more worth it to know that my computer is going to work the way I want it to, that I have control over it and can fix it if it breaks, and that a random forced update isn't going to brick my shit.

Plus KDE comes with some nice remote desktop integration for remoting into headless servers.
And the "muh games don't work" is overblown. Even some live service shit I've gotten working with dw-proton.
>>
>>109089595
Linux mint cinnamon. Nothing is better
>>
>>109089595
>Windows Laptop

I hate that term. A personal computer isn't defined by its preinstalled operating system. Unless its manufacturer does not allow you to replace its preinstalled software. In that case it's not a personal computer at all, but one that is owned by the manufacturer.
>>
Left Windows after Win11 made everything turbo bloated. Tried Linux out, it was alright but I ran into the usual annoyances setting up and working with my dev environment. Gave Mac a try out of curiosity and it's been my favorite. So I got an Air, working really well. I can have multiple IDEs up, Codex, browser, doesn't get hot at all.
>>
>>109089595
0 reason to get a windows platform nowadays, they are bloated and slow + drain your battery with constant telemetry.
Either an M-series Macbook (fantastic battery life, architecture is good for local LLMs) or Linux (Mint as a default, Arch if you have time to tinker and optimize the battery usage etc).
>>
>>109090143
Linux Mint with Plasma and Wayland would be better if it was officially supported
>>
>>109090146
Normoids like OP do not understand the difference between software and hardware.

You would think all this instant access to information coupled with powerful LLMs would enlighten them, but somehow they became even more retarded.

Used to be Linux laptops. Then moved over to my Macbook Air M1; had always used iMacs, so it wasn't a total "switch."

Recently acquired a decade old 11" Air as well a similarly old MBP. Thinking about turning one into a Linux machine.

the majority of /g/ uses linux on their laptops, but not all laptops will be compatible. try linux first, and then you can back off to windows if it's too complex or there's no drivers on linux. or just use both, dual boot!

obviously do not buy a macbook haha.

I snagged a cheap $250 Dell Inspiron with Ryzen 7 5825U. I spent another $600 upgrading the memory and SSDs back when a 4TB SSd was $250 and 64GB of DDR4 SODIMM was $100

I gotta admit I can't quite put my finger on what makes Windows 11 so insufferable. It's like some uncanny valley of UX design. Everything just feels a bit off. All of it combined together makes you avoid it at all cost like some nauseating brown wave. Like they managed to summon some weird fucking SCP trying to make a desktop.

Which one? Lenovo? I'm not OP, but I've been waiting years for a decent Arm laptop that runs Ubuntu well, and doesn't cost a shit ton. And I haven't really found anything mind blowing.

Is there some Arm laptop coming out soon that gonna be great that I don't know about? If you're just speculating, pretty sure it's gonna be at least 5 years until there's a decent selection.

(Don't even try and suggest Asahi)

Linux on Snapdragon is a pipe dream. x86 is the Linux platform. That, or you take the local LLM pill and buy Apple.
>>
>>109091227
I've been looking for an arm linux gaming laptop for over a year. Macbooks are the only ones that actually work.
>>
>>109091227
Only lenovo snapdragon elite x2 (newest) has open device tree, but the linux experience is probably buggy.
>>
>>109091257
>arm linux gaming laptop for over a year

That's never going to happen, yes your best bet is used M3 chip and up (that's when they added raytracing to the chipset, but if you want to game you need at least 20 gpu cores on those mac chips).
>>
>>109091271
only m1 and m2 chips work.
if I need more performance I'll just use my desktop
>>
>>109091446
m1/m2 don't have raytracing for gayming, he was talking about gaming on ARM.
>>
>>109091259
Yeah that's the most viable laptop I heard of that has an Arm processor, and you can install Linux on. But even so, I heard it's not great, and a bunch of things just don't work.

I'm really hoping Framework will develop a board with an Arm processor. I don't know who else would that with Linux in mind.
>>
>>109091257
Wait for RTX spark in the Fall. They are based on the DGX Spark which was designed for Linux first so the support will be good. They will be expensive though.

there are like 3 games that have ray tracing and you are not going to have an enjoyable experience running them through 4 different compatibility layers
>>
>>109091591
I've looked into snapdragon laptops. Even in the best case scenario you have massive issues like batterly life for example. The only arm laptops that actually work with linux are m1 and m2 mac books.
>>
>>109091647
>massive issues
>battery life
Isn’t battery life the one thing they have over other laptops? What are the issues?
>>
>>109089595
I have a macbook pro m4. its alright, if you put in a shitload of time ricing it to become a tiling wm setup. still has some annoyances though. if I could trade it in Id get the framework 13 pro instead
>>
>>109091655
only in windows, linux power management is basically non functional on qualcomm cpus. on m1/m2 it's on par with any regular amd/intel laptop.
trust me I really want an arm laptop to fuck around with box and fex so I've done hours of research
>>
>>109091591
Framework is a terrible company; they market overpriced products to affluent hobbyists.
Linux will only thrive on Snapdragon chips if Qualcomm decides to invest in it, which is unlikely. (they have deals with microsoft)
Gaming on ARM macs is decent, but you truly need 20 GPU cores for optimal performance. (m3+)
Linux on Mac ARM is subpar, essentially a waste of time, as it negates all the advantages you get with macOS like battery life.

Same, every single one has compromises somewhere. I really wish i could build a desktop but i genuinely have no space
>>
>>109091712
my chromebook has zero compromises
it's super fat, it's made out of plastic, somehow it has an 11 inch screen despite being the size of a 14 inch laptop, tn panel w/ pwm flicker, single core performance of a pentium 4, the emmc crashes unless I slow it down to a quarter of it's speed
I use it every day
>>
>>109091187
>>A Snapdragon Laptop with Linux
delusional
>>
>>109091681
Problem with laptops is that there is no good one in the range of $1k-2$k.
Basically all the decent laptops not made out of plastic, with decent cpu gpu combo are like $2600+
16 inch m5 pro, rog zephyrus, dell xps 16 etc.
>>
Linux desktop, cheap Windows laptop for work.
>>
>>109091673
The only reason I mentioned Framework is because, as far as I know, they're the only people who actually make their own laptops. Like they might feasibly be able to make an Arm laptop that runs Linux well. Everyone else just resells Clevo/Tongfang/[other chinese manufacters] laptops with Linux installed on them. Tuxedo was actually trying to get Linux working on, I believe, a Tongfang laptop that had an Arm processor. But they gave up and scrapped the plan.

It's waste of money developing drivers for it, since microsoft is doing it for them. You could buy x86 laptop, but you will get shit battery, and need at least $2k+ to get non plastic piece of shit.

What are you going to use it for?
If you code.
Use Linux.
If you just browse the internet.
Use Linux
If you need a specific software that only properly runs in Windows.
Use windows.
If you need a specific software that only properly runs on Mac.
Use a mac.

Just buy a laptop and change the OS later. Most of them are windows anyway. I would just install Mint because most Linux distros I tried will have some problems trying to install but Mint will just fucking work even if cinnamon isn't the best.

All the M processor Macbooks have great battery life, which is a massive selling point. I have an M1 Pro for my music making, I'm not sold on the operating system but the hardware is nice.

If it's not a macbook you can put either windows or linux on it.

I have Fedora KDE 44 on my Legion 7, but it's an older model with i7 11800h, 32gb RAM and RTX 3080.

I'd prefer an AMD GPU for an easier time with drivers but AMD has pretty much given up on GPUs
