ROG/Asus mobo has a weird problem of very long boot time if you have a lot of external HDD attached to it. That's the only problem I have with them. I've used Asus mobo for my last 3 PC. I think I might change mobo brand for my next PC.

Ah yes one of those amazing boards with split lanes where you get either x16/x0 or x8/x4 and 4 lanes just sort of mysteriously vanish.
>>
>>109101251
>42 fucking PCIE lanes with 32 of them for graphics
990FX was so based for the money, got to the point in 2016 where the UD3 was a $99 dollar motherboard and it could push a 220w+ CPU all day long, pair that with 16GB of 1866 RAM for $80 and a $160 8350, and you've got a beast computer on a budget until ryzen came and obsoleted it, but you still didn't pay much.

ASUS PRIME B650-PLUS that holds my 9800X3D, and I only bought it for the S/PDIF port in the back, otherwise I would've bought something cheaper.
If you're buying expensive mobo and not going to overclock RAM (which is the only reason why anyone should buy an expensive mobo) then you're fucking retard.

I was willing to accept that this is about the most you can ask for modern motherboards in terms of PCIe slots.
Minus the 1x slots and PCI slots it mimicks what was pretty standard for the last ~15 years.

Now they are slowing becoming afraid to add that second CPU connected slot even on higher end boards

>Now they are slowing becoming afraid to add that second CPU connected slot even on higher end boards
Yeah I've noticed as well and it's ass. I hope this mobo doesn't die on me or something, other than that I'm glad I won't have to shop for another one until the DDR6 days, whenever that may be.

I don't like that wifi is baked into motherboards now because wifi NIC drivers always have a binary blob or require the use of ndiswrapper and fwcutter. I refuse kernel taint.
The FCC should mandate free and open 802.11 drivers and require (which is why the shit is always softmodem-tier) that frequency control is implemented in the radio itself and not in software. RF output filters fucking exist dickheads.

How did we go from professional hardware to boards designed for literal gaymer toddlers? Why do we accept compromised toy hardware like M.2 in a fucking desktop, when the desktop SDD form factor was meant to be U.2?

>compromised toy hardware like M.2 in a fucking desktop

>>109107240
M.2 were originally meant for laptops and their max capacity is limited a lot by not having enough space on the PCB. Desktops were supposed to use U.2 SSDs, those are the same size as SATA SSDs but with the NVMe interface that M.2 uses.

Most people are goycattle who use laptops for everything. Another thing to hate about M.2 is its influence on case designs, especially for Mini-ITX. You always have more SATA ports than your case has drive bays.

>6 sata ports on a modern platform
>solid VRM and PCB layout
>2 DIMM slots for better ram layout (any more and you should probably just have a server board and chassis)
>6 m.2 slots usable without lane sharing,
>4x4 gen 5 bifurcation on the second x8 slot available
>gen 4x4 slot on the bottom
>65W PD to the front header
>2 TB4 ports
>decent USB I/O layout
>5 gig lan (if you want 10 gig just slap it into the x1 slot above the GPU)
>TWO ps/2 ports in 2026
>wifi 7
>CUDIMM support
>regularly on sale for around $450

Not even touching on all the fan headers, overclocking toys and shit. The only issue with this board is it's a dead end socket and the CMOS battery is UNDER THE I/O COVER. Fucking MSI. Otherwise this board is a relic for grognards who just want to hook everything to one board. It's great for that shit. You can have 8 goddamned m.2 (or u.2/u.3 via an adapter and backplane) drives hooked up even without using external thunderbolt enclosures. 4 drives (3 gen 5, 1 gen 4) from the CPU if you use an add in card on the second slot, and 4 from the chipset.m.2s. The DMI has access to 8 gen4 lanes so bandwidth isn't too bad even if you hit all of them at once. That, plus 6 sata ports. This board is really solid even if it's

it's because windowlickers don't understand how lanesharing works and treat a secondary PCIe slot hooked up to the CPU like it's "Stealing lanes"
Genuinely it became a sticking point to buy boards with shittier layouts and overall lower build quality to avoid a complete non-issue. Mobo manufacturers are now advertising the lack of the ability to switch lanes if you want as a "feature".

crosshair vi hero. its lasted me a tonne of upgrades and oc's super well. i have 64gb corsair vengeance 3000 ram running at 3600 no issue. i also have a a network card with wifi 6 that im thinking of updating to 7 at my new house, and a pcie to nvme adaptor. also running a 5700x

the only gripe i have with this board is that the fan controller is incompatible with setting the fans to zero through any software means. ive been thinking of getting a OpenFAN Controller for this very reason, but right now my case is cool enough even when gaming that i can just leave the fans all unplugged (4 x 120).

Solid choice, I had the vii and for whatever reason AMD clamped down on the PCIE 4.0 bios update. It's got a 5950x and 32gigs of 3200 in there, the ram controller on my chip is kind of shit. There was a brief period where you could use the top slot at 4.0 speeds. I'm sure there's some russian somewhere who's re-enabled that microcode somehow.
>>
>>109108892
you could rollback to a different bios version, theres a few mega threads on overclockers

https://www.overclock.net/threads/rog-crosshair-vi-overclocking-thread.1624603/

that you can find all sorts of 1st party but not officially supported bioses

also i havent seen that image in ages, in hs i absolutely called it a zip disquette ironically

I've thought about it but honestly the difference in performance is so negligible unless I slot in a 4090 or higher it's not worth the trouble. That and I finally did a full platform upgrade last fall before everything went to shit. AM4 was so solid, I ran 3 different CPUs of that fucking board.

yeah it wasn't until x570 where motherboard manufacturers started overbuilding and adding features to AMD boards again for the first time in fucking forever. The Vi was a decent board, but kind of phoned in from ASUS compared to what they were putting out for the intel platforms at the time. The original launch of ryzen was so risky and AMD was so close to being scrapped for parts, I hazard most of /g/ at this point has forgotten how much of a hail mary it really was. Ryzen and ryzen+ were so shit for gaming but I loved the idea of having 8 haswell cores to fuck around with back then.
>>
Might as well ask here, are ASRock boards still to be avoided for AM5 systems?
>>
>>109108982
yeah i had a 1700x as my second cpu. honestly the fact i went for that after being burned by my 8350 "black edition" is kinda wild. that pc is long gone however

i was working in a pc shop at the time and a lot of people were hesitant to go ryzen, even after several generations "i know intel and its what i trust" and all that. man, those were dark days for pc building (bitcoin miners were complete fuckwits and the rudest people youve ever met). ai is just as bad but at least its not like youd deal with ai customers at a pc shop now
