Playing a video or song from media player meant that you were a tech normalfag, but nerds didn't hate you for it.
There was no reason not to install winamp/VLC/foobar/MPC-HC or even itunes which were clearly superior, but sometimes having fewer buttons is good for your dad or grandpa
>>
because it couldn't play the special fileformat used by pirated movies so we had to install random divx players that could
>>
>>109106847

Correct. Proof not everyone is an idiot on here.
>>
anon album art imagefile had certain naming and image dimensions
>>
>>109106844
Integrated DRM. Didn't include popular codecs like h264 by default until late in its life. By association with wmv which is a shit format.
Still better than RealPlayer.
>>
>>109106844
The win7 and later version ruined the glass aesthetic of the vista version.

fpbp
wmp9 was the best, 10 runners up
>>
>>109106844
It could only play a small subset of file formats and i immediately dumped it for vlc

>>
>>109106844
it was good in the window xp days, especially compared to itunes, but by the time windows 7 was mainstream VLC and literally anything else was just faster and nicer to run

I did still use WMP for burning audio CDs as late as 2016 tho, didn't wanna have to download other shit

^these noobs are clearly retarded

Anyone who was anyone used Winamp, Coolplayer, or DeliPlayer. If you were new to the game then you might have used something like Quintessential, Foobar, MpxPlay, or Billy, but no one, and I mean no one, would have been caught dead using WMP. Instant lamer fag status.

I remember when I found out about pic related idk wtf your post is but it looks like something I'd get malware while trying to install an alternative to realplayer
>>
>>109106844
It was perfectly fine for managing a music library and playing music and videos. But Winamp had a far better "small" mode that made it better for remaining visible while listening to music in the background while doing other things on the computer.

It was also complete ass for ripping CDs. For one, if there was a scratch that made the CD sometimes skip, it would rip it with the skip in it, and report success so you'd only find out later when you listened to it. Better ripping programs like EAC detected that there was a skip and went back a few seconds and retried until it got it right, or gave up and reported timestamps in the track with potential errors. For another, it ripped to low bitrate WMA by default. This was both crappy quality and a format that way fewer players supported. Most people wanted MP3 for its better compatibility.
>>
>>109106844
windows media player included a handy feature that allowed a fake video to automatically open a webpage to download a "missing codec" or something.
it was an excellent vector for malware.

Pretty much this. It did lead to a lot of shitty encodes though, people didn't know shit about ripping CDs so entire collections would end up as 128kbps wma files.

>actually, that objectively bad thing that everybody hated was good! It was only misunderstood!
Why is this so common on 4chan nowadays?
>>
>>109109458
This, but it only really started to be an issue around Vista and beyond. I remember giving up on it but being used to the UI, so I got a Foobar theme that was WMP themed.
