I think they realize that people shouldn't use the internet. It reduces their power over the people.

That's why components are expensive now. They will price more than half of the population out of the internet within a decade.

It's not like that. They are literally too dumb to think that way.
You can always confidently say that it's about money and you would be right 99 times out of 100.
So with computers it's simple. If compute is useful, then it should be sold on a meter and they should get a %. Remember, they never invented anything at all. 0 innovations came from FAGMAN, it's literally always the academia people publishing stuff for their academic style points and also startups FAGMAN aquires. They invent nothing. They are a big nose tiny hat middle man that only cares about taking out a % from a functioning economy, without doing anything, no effort required.
If you want to make people pay you for using computers, you should place yourself in between consumers and manufacturers. Sure way to do that is to buy up the stock and bribe manufacturers to cap the production rates, contract the remaining capacity (manufacturers love that, it's very stable income compared to volatile consumer markets).
So it's not as much pricing out, as purposefuly destroying market relationship and inserting themselves in the middle of everything, making sure you give them a %.
Basically Scam Altman and alike want you to pay rent to them, not much more to it and it's not like they're hiding it. They say it openly, pretty sure I can find famous quotes like this in 5 seconds. No reason for overcomplicating these affairs.

the amount of people that use local is minuscule
and no it's not because of the hardware expense
they do not give a shit about you at all

I never mentioned GPUs. There's also SSD and HDD for storing data. That's the real shortage people complain about.
The only way to get it is to rent.
> they do not give a shit about you at all
bs, AWS wants me to rent their shit

you can give a warehouse full of 8tb ssd to average person and they wouldn't touch it over using google photos

absolutely positively nothing of value was lost

Bull shit, people complain about 256GB being too smol and 512 being not enough for work sometimes. And they don't even know that SSDs work best when they're half full, no mostly full, as that reduces their lifespan slightly faster. So for those who need 512GB, 1TB is optimal.
And none of it really matters, since it's different from GPU situation. Gayming GPU are doing just fine, there's plenty of 8 and 16GB and you literally don't need more for that purpose. SSD, on the other hand, are expensive no matter their capacity, just x3 everything by default and then it's more if they're high capacity, old datacenter grade.

Yeah. Funny how dictorships were tying so hard to restrict access to free information only for FAGMAN to do it themseves and poison the entire Internet with slop and bots and shilling.
