why are thins not commonplace?laptops are a proof a CPU can be cooled with less than an inch thick CPU block and its still air cooler, not waterthey make 1U servers but not 1U home computer casesthe tallness of 1U is 4.4cm, its already more thick than any laptop altough not by muchthey have 4cm fans (fan has 4cm diameter) on the back sideand usually a much larger blower fan with a large diameter but it is very thin and facing upwards, the airflow goes backwards thoughthe thin era would truly begin when enough people open their eyes and stop buying traditional tall, deep and wide PC cases which contain ATX power supply and a big GPUbesides 1U case also fits ATX motherboard thats why they have a lot of width and depth, they are only very thin, but they are still fairly large things, the PSU is also big but is thin neverthelesssummary why people buy big fat cases:>computer case needs a transparent glass panel, or a plexiglass at very least, while thin cases wont have that>computer case needs RGB LED fans, those are manufactured only at 12cm - 14cm or larger sizes, 4cm fans are not RGB
honestly, i feel like rack mounted computers should have better options for cooling, i see no reason you couldnt hook up a bunch of cpus and gpus to a large radiator
>>1091109274U rackmount case is big enough for anykind of cooling you could find in a normal desktop case>>1091109273U is "almost big enough" as well
>>109110904All the increased price and reduced upgradability of a laptop, but not portable and no screen. Why?
>>109110904because server CPUs just like laptop CPUs run at much lower frequencies
>>109110992what makes you think it'd be less upgradable than a laptop? You can generally replace RAM and drives easily on a server>>109110904would be awesome for musicians and network engineers who probably need a rack anyway
>>109110904Because those 40mm fans are so loud the unit needs to be put in its own room, so it effectively takes up more space than a normal desktop
>>109110904>1U
The Mac mini is like 4cm tall
>>109110904nobody's using a CRT for a desktop usage, granddad
>>109110904Mini-PCs already existsAnyways, big cases are for big GPUs, which people need, (and not just for games or AI) since every iGPU in the world is weaker than even a desktop 4060.
