This is one of many proofs that the "good guy gaben" meme is simply a marketing psyop. Newell is a cuck of the capitalist system, just like every other capitalist. Everything he does, he does only because it's profitable. That's all. He's not outside the system; he's controlled by the system. And his behavior is a result of that.
>>
>>109111938
>Base model being over $1000 is insane
Yeah, the 512GB model is just grossly overpriced. The 2TB seems reasonable enough for the hardware prices being insane for what they are.

I guess Valve knows most folks are probably going to buy the "Ferarri" version like the original Deck (512GB, ironically) and 1/2TB OLED Decks were.

>>109111953
TPBP. I'm going to wait a year and see if prices spike or not before I buy one for the novelty, but it's not as a snap "cool gimmick" price for me right now.

>>

The wait-list for the controller is stretching to 2028 by some reports and the newly priced Deck sold out. Seems like even if they aren't selling many of them, Valve is at least throttling their production

>>
>>109112309
Since their real goal with the Deck and Machine is to spread the user base of Steam OS, they probably figure that a shitty launch is better than delaying it indefinitely.

Combine the increased cost of hardware, along with how "AAA" game companies are hurting right now. Valve might want developers to get used to shipping SteamOS native, lower end (graphically) games as the new normal.

The massive price increases in computer/gaming hardware is entirely caused by the AI bubble, the 2-3 AI companies ordering 3 years worth of memory production (nothing concrete was signed, no money has changed hands, just a "I plan to buy lots of memory, trust me bro"), and the memory cartel which, in typical price fixing fashion, they used that as an excuse to artificially inflate their prices for everyone.
AI companies are trying all the dirty tricks to burn more and more money, due to the CEOs deluding themselves they're about to create some superintelligent AI that will solve everyone's problems instead of a glorified semi-reliable chatbot that runs in a loop. They're about to run out of money unless they get IPOs on schedule, and their biggest clients are starting to question whether the glorified chatbots are even worth it.

tl;dr by mid 2027 the bubble will pop and prices will fall to normal levels again

About the steam OS itself, not much aside from being another flavor of arch linux tightly coupled with Steam that will, quite literally, turn your desktop into a living room PC.
I guess it's more symbolic, now you have a real alternative to Windows backed by another monopoly (valve).
You can do so with Cachy or arch itself, i've been running cachy for a month and it's been great.

I'm not going to defend pricing, it is what it is but I just want to point out Valve is at a significant disadvantage in this matter due to how open their platform is. They can't play "sell devices at loss and cover it with store sales profit" long-term strategy like alternative systems can, because as soon as their hardware is the cheapest on the market in relation to computetional power it will end similar to just like PS3 did when security measures were overcome and Linux got running - purchased in bulk and placed in a supercomputer cluster.

Sony doesn't have to make a profit on every PS6 device, GTA will make sure they will stay greatly profitable at the end of the day. Valve can't really take a risk to give away steam machines without any marginal profits, this is too much to ask from such an open hardware platform in my opinion.

So why did exactly Valve decide to release the Gabecube right now, in the middle of a hardware shortage crisis, that is significantly driving up prices instead of waiting for a couple of years for prices to normalize once the AI bubble pops?

They could just say they would delay it due to market pricing and be done with it. The very first steam machines were a flop and that was with hardware pricing being significantly lower compared to today's prices. Are they using them simply to shill their OS to the general public, or has Gaben gone completely senile?

Both the Deck and Machine are meant to act more like reference devices than products. Think of it like a Founders Edition Nvidia card or a Microsoft Surface, the purpose is to have some hardware that can make use of the features you want to implement in software, and let consumers use that while other manufacturers get theirs ready to market.
Then again this doesn't always work, case in point, the Microsoft Surface, how many Windows tablets are there besides it?

1. Price it as low as they can and take as little profit as they can while trying to edge out the console market
Or
2. Give up on the ambition of competing in the console market and just make it a living room PC priced as such for more profit.

They chose 2, because 1 wasn't going to work with prices the way they are.

It's overpriced to prevent people with no intentions of using for steam to look elsewhere.

They developed the steam machine as a standardized testbed for steam os, and functionality with games in particular. They have no interest in somebody buying their product and attempting to do nothing but run utility programs outside of the steam ecosystem. It designed for ine thing and rhat is to play light steam games, and focus on gathering telemetry to better optimize for simple hardware.
The price is entirely there to prevent anybody from using it for its intended purpose.

It's like buying a risc-v testbed and complaining that it's slow. It's meant to experiment. The steam machine is just an experiment where the user is the guinea pig. They need the rat to run the maze, they don't need people to arbitrage the test equipment for their own purposes.

I disagree, they could have focused their efforts on the Deck 2 and they could have designed it around being dockable. It's not like the software is any different anyway and a docked Deck 2 would be identical to using a Steam Machine. Even if they had to price the Deck 2 high at least it would have longevity and functionality beyond being a low spec e-waste cube.

How many console gamers right now have a Switch 2 docked next to their TV? A Deck 2 designed to be easily dockable and a controller puck in-built to the dock would have been a million times better and everybody would have loved it. If prices improved they could drop the price and it would still make sense to purchase unlike the machine which is only becoming more useless by the second

the only people buying a cuckcube at this price are very uninformed people and guys with enough expendable income to drop $1,000+ on a gimmicky toy. im sure there are plenty of both lining up right now

Gamers Nexus teardown of the Steam Machine confirm that Valve used Pheonix 2 with 2 standard Zen 4 cores and 4 smaller Zen 4c cores. It is worst than previously thought.

I wonder what the OS is gonna look like if its gunna be that way
>>
>>109123316
you only need a laptop cpu for gaming and if you want more you are just poor

We knew what to expect from the GPU, but that weak-ass CPU is just diabolical.
>>
>>109123349
the cpu will perform even worse because all steam machines ship with 1 dimm of ram so it's half the memory bandwidth. a little crazy of a decision

Game performance doesn't rely that much on dual channel but all this shit is moot at the price point anyway so w/e
Gimped PC box for 1k+.. fuck off Gabe

its jsut the difference between 40 fps and 60 fps in cpu intensive games it doesn't even matter
>>
>>109123415
You only need 40 fps if you have vrr.
>>
>>109123359
Nah, not all, in the gamers nexus review there was an interview segment with the valve guys and they said it's basically gacha. You're getting whatever supply they had that day, 1 stick of 16 or 2 sticks of 8.

>You're getting whatever supply they had that day, 1 stick of 16 or 2 sticks of 8.
They said this wasn't true and sent Gamers Nexus a correction, see the screenshot here >>109123362 all units will have 1 stick only and yeah it won't matter in heavily GPU bound scenarios but the 1% lows will still suffer
>>
>>109123422
VRR doesnt work below 48fps by default you need extra protocols that dont always exist on your hardware.
>>
>>109123362
Not even dual channel? Kek say it ain't so goy. Say it ain't so

They honestly shouldn't have hard locked it to 30w, the chip was weak already also not fuse off the igpu.
>>
>>109124042
it's dual channel if you source the second stick yourself ;)

Might as well hand it out for free considering the price of the system is meaningless and you're tied into a $130/year subscription and $80 games to make up the difference

The CPU they chose is genuinely pathetic and I don't understand what they were thinking.

>>109123415
It shouldn't be *as* bad with DDR 5 since it has higher bandwidth, but it's still a retarded decision.
At this point Valve took the wrong decision at every junction.
The only way I see them saving the Machine is to release a barebones version at like half the price, then at least people who already own weak-ass gaming laptops can use their existing RAM/SSD.
>>
>>109123362
This is a good thing, now you only have to buy one more stick to upgrade to 32.
>>
>>109122904
this is really gonna hurt the sales of GTA6
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH BRO

My original statement was “finally doing what I’ve wanted them to do for years.” You asked me to list 5, I listed 7. Now you’re talking about an OS that is on extended life support to 2032.

I’m sure you know the “I’m staying on XP forever, oh OK I’ll upgrade” routine at this point. When that comes for 10 LTSC, wouldn’t it be NICE for Windows 12, 14, 365 (whatever they call it) to have most of the regressions between 10 and 11 addressed? I would, so having /g/tards on a terminally incomplete platform like Linux helps that mission. It’s such an easy argument to make because it’s all they want to do anyway. Win win.

I love Linux. People should keep using it so I can benefit on Windows.
