Hey guys, My friend uses Windows 10, and he wants to switch to Linux. Which distro should he get? Linux Mint, Zorin OS, or something else?
>>109128472Why
>>109128472If he's decently tech savvy, go Fedora. Preferably the KDE version. If he's a brainlet, then Ubuntu or Kubuntu is good.If he's autistic, then any Arch-based distro is fine.If he's between smart and brainlet, then he could check out Ultramarine, it's a Fedora distro that doesn't require much setup compared to Vanilla.
>>109128513Don't lie. Why?
gentoo
>>109128472>Linux Mint, Zorin OS, or something else?Out of those, Zorin. But he has to logout once and change to wayland.Mint is fine, but if hes a gaymer, he wants a recent wayland desktop like KDE and GNOME. + zorin offers .debs, flatpaks and snaps. I'ts not an ideological distro, it's a just werks distro. I personally don't use it and I'd use regular k/ubuntu over it, but I think it's perfect for a newb.
Ubuntu has GNOME and Snaps. It's very well supported and if your friend doesn't mind a quite different experience from Windows, but wants everything to just work, choose this. (For brainlets)Linux Mint has neither GNOME or Snaps, however Snaps can be enabled if so inclined (Snap is an app store by Canonical). This is an easy conversion from Windows. Based on Ubuntu. (Also for brainlets)Fedora: If your friend is a power user, pick this with the KDE Plasma desktop environment. SELinux comes preinstalled and already in Enforcing mode. SELinux can be quite difficult to configure on other distros but in Fedora it's already installed. Imo that's kinda the only selling point of Fedora so make sure you pick the KDE version.Arch: Very minimal and simple and you control everything during the installation process (partitioning, installing base packages, kernel, desktop environment). Can install any window manager or desktop environment you want during the installation itself (including the aforementioned KDE, or Mint's Cinnamon) If your friend is the kind that uses the terminal a lot, this is a good distro to start with (later on you would install Gentoo). Rolling release!Debian (stable branch): All core packages and libraries stay still and only get security updates or severe bug fixes, similar to what Windows XP did to address Windows 2000's "DLL Hell". Choose this for a reproducible install.
>>109128742Recommending Gnome to a Windows user is a huge gamble, it's really bad. There is a type of user who will vibe with Gnome, but they'll have to be willing to give up most of the UI conveniences they're used to on Windows. Or they have to restore those through extensions which may or may not break every time Gnome updates.
>>109129014Why do those footfags have to be the face of Linux? S m h
Zorin or pikaos or fedora
>>109128472Bazzite
>>109128472Bazzite desktop edition with KDE Plasma, every other answer is simply wrong. There are two types of Linux users, Bazzite users and people who argue what the best distribution is, hint it's Bazzite. One could make the argument for Debian Sid.
>>109128472use Fedora KDE
>>109128472How should we know? You have told us nothing of the hardware of software requirements or your friend's technical competence. That said, Ubuntu plus Ubuntu Pro. Even though Canonical kinda sucks.
>>109130882thats why bazzite is the best answer
>>109128472I pay $49.99/mo for a Zorin pro subscription, and have zero regrets. Best operating system on the market right now. Makes Windicks and MacOS look pathetic.
>>109130977Imagine paying $50/month and still not getting timely security updates
>>109130977you could just use bazzite for free and have the same experience
>>109130986The pro subscription gets you security updates every 4 hours and lots of other perks.
>>109130996Zorin doesn't offer a subscription, you are sending your money to an Indian scammer.
>>109130892Dunno. I tried Silverblue a while back and found the whole rpm-ostree layering/reboot mechanism annoying.>>109130996Zorin Pro doesn't bundle Ubuntu Pro. You're not getting a full set of updates.
>>109131001The only time my PC ever updates is when OS level updates get pushed via the updater. I set mine to automatically update my PC during downtime, and it handles itself, and I have never had an update brick my machine the way Fedora does. It is seriously a great option as a first pick OS. I had some growing pains installing work applications like vmware workstation, I tried running it in a container, I had to turn off the immutable part, install it, then re-enable immutable-ness with some command line bullshittery, but after that it has been hella smooth.
>>109131001I enabled Ubuntu Pro on Zorin Pro. It's a very simple hack.
>>109131022>The only time my PC ever updatesThe only time my PC ever restarts* sorry my sugar is kinda wonky rn. I just ate and took insulin, I should be clear in a few minutes
>>109128472Debian or Fedora, with KDE
>>109131022>I had to turn off the immutable partYeah, that's the layering/reboot thing I'm talking about. I'm having another look at atomic distros now to see if I want to try again. Will probably just stick with my current setup desu.>>109131033lol k>>109131025So it doesn't conflict with Zorin's separate stream of updates?
>>109131059no conflicts at all
>>109131059yeah if you are happy with Debian, it's perfectly fine. I have sid on this machine, it is a low end piece of shit, 14th gen core i7, rtx 5060 and onlu 32gb of ddr5 6000 ram, I think I might transfer the ram and ssd into a steam machine. They are starting to pop up on Facebook market place sans ram and ssd for $600. Sell the rest of the system for weed money or something. I have a 7800x3d with a 9070 xt running Bazzite that just beats the snot out of Windows. It is nice long term to use immutable Linux, as long as you don't fuck with the core system too much, just install the kernel level shit, and turn the layering back on, and live your life as if the underlying OS doesn't matter.
>>109131078you are a liar pure and simple
>>109131115no u r
cachyosalso you should be asking an AI these simple questions or /sqt/. don't waste a thread on this nonsense, faggot.
>>109131168cachy is just unstable incomplete bazzite
>>109131104Yeah it sounds nice. I'll look into it. I just kinda trust Debian more than any other distro, though. Also how did you know that I am running Debian lol
>>109131181Well, you're not wrong. It's definitely not a distro for beginners like Bazzite is.
>>109131413Or people who don’t want to sit and babysit their goddamn PC night and day. Why are you like this?
>>109131229Because it’s the only distro outside of Bazzite that just works right now. There’s been a slew of updates pushed that have fucked people’s installs up on Fedora and Arch. Came out but in a lot of cases, people had to reinstall everything. I think Fedora still hasn’t released the sddm fix yet. Every other distribution is basically autism fuel.
>>109131442>Because it’s the only distro outside of Bazzite that just works right nowOh really?>There’s been a slew of updates pushed that have fucked people’s installs up on Fedora and ArchAre we talking about Plasma 6.7 or something else?>Came out but in a lot of cases, people had to reinstall everything. I think Fedora still hasn’t released the sddm fix yetWhat? WTF happened? Didn't PLM replace SDDM?>Every other distribution is basically autism fuelrofl
>>109131424Some people clearly enjoy this. CachyOS is the most popular distro among Steam users.
>>109131530Yeah plasma, they caused a lot of bugs in 6.7. I and many others faced picrel after updating. There’s a few fixes out but they cause other bugs. Just stay on 6.6.4 for now until 6.7.2. I’m sure it’ll be fixed soon enough but I’m happy with 6.6.4.
>>109131539You don’t enjoy it. You act like a goddamn woman monkey branching. I swear you troons might be right about your brains being female. You can’t just accept a solution without making your lives more difficult on purpose, never settling down and relaxing.
Just use Arch. If he goes for ubuntu then its no reason to go to Linux. Ubuntu is like windows on Linux kernel.
>>109131590That's a bit far-fetched. Ubuntu isn't ideal but it's still a massive step up from Windows.>>109131553>picrelDamn that's brutal lol. Just out of curiosity how are you staying on 6.6.4 if your distro has already upgraded to 6.7?
>>109131614Bazzite is staying on 6.6.4 as is Sid. I think until 6.7.1 comes out in a few weeks.
>>109131622Sid is on 6.6.5, but yeah same thing pretty much.
>>109131641Just stay there. 6.7 broke compatibility with the new open source nvidia 595-610 drivers, even if you don’t have cuda installed. Kwin is a mess. Shit “krashes”. Not in the conventional “kde is shit” more that the new drivers actually caused the issue. I did a lot of digging into why. This time, at least, is not the fault of the kde plasma developers.
>>109131668 (samefagging)It’s because all the end point rendering is done on the card. The way the open drivers work is it loads everything into memory from a binary on the card on boot. So it causes kwin to shit itself in confusion. Especially on 50 series gpus. The fix moves some stuff in kwin around but that breaks a lot of other things. The developers are aware of the bugs. Valve paid them to actually fix it. Valve out here cleaning up nvidia bugs.
>>109131668I actually run GNOME but I like to know what is happening with KDE as I used to run it, and maybe will again someday if they ever fix my grievances.I avoid NVIDIA though as I don't want to run proprietary drivers. I had one many years ago and it just got in the way of running Linux how I want to.>>109131699Nice work Valve, I guess.
>>109131716The new drivers are “open source”. It’s just a loader but it’s something. They’ll be included in the new Linux 7.1 kernel moving forwards. The need for the proprietary drivers is over. I think they allow you to render, if you want cuda, you’ll have to install that separately. But for base 3d rendering and performance metrics, it’s a step in the right direction. No drm without cuda though.
>>109128472Mint
>>109131806Clem is antisemitic and transphobic.
>>109131559The fuck are you talking about? I don't even use CachyOS. You're just projecting your own insecurities here.
>>109131817DONATING TO MINT RIGHT NOW
>>109131424Go ahead and at least state you are a complete retard out loud. If you have any level of competence with tech and an IQ above 60, you don't need to babysit your PC in any capacity. CachyOS is all around a great experience.
>>109131855No gui for software support. It’s just another autism fidget spinner os. Terminal bullshittery.
>>109131863Why would you need a GUI when you have ArchWiki?
>>109131863I think you missed the stipulation of having an IQ above 60. You do realize the vast majority of system utilities have GUI tools and the ones that don't have easy to use, competent GUI tools right? Also the entire Arch wiki exists.
>>109131887* ones that don't have, competent terminal tools.
>>109131882>>109131887>>109131892Thanks for proving my point.
>>109131817why is he antisemitic and transphobic? i genuinely cannot find anything on this via search. and why would it matter if linux mint works very well?
>>109131925Nta but he’s made several statements online. The dude is nuts. Use whatever you want. It’s not that he made the statements, it’s that he apologized about them which is worse in my book.
>>109131910Lmfao. Imagine getting filtered by simple CLI tools.
>>109131962I left ms dos in 1994 anon. I don’t want a tui. I just want to use my pc without going to google for answers. Honestly that makes you dumber. All you’re doing is copy and pasting shit from one text field to another. If you pulled the cock out of your mouth and actually tried to get work done you’d understand.
Just use Nixos, why avoiding the most Linux experience?
>>109128513>Fedora. Preferably the KDE version.>or Kubuntu>>109128564>Why?KDE operates very similar to Windows layout and Fedora gets timely software upgrades without feeling too out-of-date like Debian.Nigga, why are (You) here asking about it if you haven't done the most basic research
>>109131980That's the funniest part of your argument. I don't need to go to google constantly for answers nor am I copy pasting shit all the time. You learn a small handful of commands, and then everything works as you would expect. It's very easy to use. That's one of the main reasons I switched from Windows. My computer doesn't decided to break itself every other week because Microsoft and their army of downy's decided to rewrite some core part of the operating system. 10 years ago I might agree with you and I was still using windows then. Linux as a whole has come a long way in terms of ease of use. Sure there are garbage distros but Cachy definitely isn't in that bucket. I've managed to be more productive with it than I have with anything else in the last few years.
>>109132037>Microsoft and their army of downy'srofl
>>109128472Do not listen to a single person in this thread other than me. Linux Mint.
>>109132037None of what you’re saying makes me want anything without gui tools. Bazzite is more solid than windows. Has a nice gui for everything. Works as it should. Fuck off with your fidget spinner. Nobody likes the terminal you tub of goo. Lose the weight and get laid.
>>109132074"Nobody likes the terminal you tub of goo"Go talk to almost anybody whos worth a damn at their job in cybersec, or software dev but ok. Use whatever you like man. My point was that cachy is a great experience as a whole. I can't help it if you can't use a keyboard properly or are completely unwilling to learn anything new.
>>109128472
>>109128566Nope, Gentoo is GNU extremist, that disallows you from not following Richards teachings. Only for devout believers.
If his PC is fairly new, Kubuntu has the most Windows-like interface. If it's a bit older, Xubuntu or Lubuntu.I recommend the Ubuntu family for newbies. If there's a problem, there's a large community that can help.

tell him to try out cachyos. Although its "improvements" are a bit questionable, its a pretty solid distro with a lot of the plusses of arch while still being easy to use.

All Linux is broken because none of them have a stable userspace API and no backwards compatibility. Your software won't work unless it's open source and is constantly getting attention from repo maintainers. AppImages are a joke as well.avoid the Linux meme
>>109134174Least obvious shill deflection, kek.
