Is there any legitimate reasons why you need more than 16gb of RAM? Especially if you aren't a content creator and/or streamer, is there really a need for more than 16gb?
Most new video games require 16 GB minimum.
>>109136536>Let Me Guess, You Need More?>Micronsoon you will not be able to buy their ram anymore, let alone 16gb
>>10913653632 is the sweet spot, 16 in this an age is not great, where every app/game are not optimized.
I daily drive Fedora Plasma and mine never goes above 7GB. Yeah, 16 is more than enough
>>109136628what games? shit is becoming so expensive anyway that soon, if prices don't go down, it will become pointless to make them other than stuff that runs on a toaster, since most people will be priced out from both new hardware and substitutions for when the stuff they already have will inevitably break.
>>109136536>Is there any legitimate reasons why you need more than 16gb of RAM?Yes, I often have more than one of these apps open at a time for 3D animation production as I pass assets back and forth across them.>Especially if you aren't a content creator and/or streamer, is there really a need for more than 16gb?Windows 11 and modern web browsers can be particularly RAM hungry.
>>109136667Consoles are back on the menu. But I wish PlayStation had the ability to enable keyboard and mouse.
>>109136674>Consoles are back on the menulol, this is today's news, and seeing the trend, they're just going to rise prices more and more.
>>109136740When you're looking at these sorts of prices just for RAM then it's still an option even with the higher prices for consoles.
Its a must when you have a job and you need to multitask a lot
>>109136824or when you don't have a job and have 400 porn tabs open.
>>109136667Okay you have a really solid point, but In a perfect world where the funny hat dudes haven't manipulated RAM (also SSD, GPU) prices, there is a still the issues of software not performing well on 16gb and lower and higher RAM would be better.
>>10913653616GB still fucks if you're on XFCE Linux, it's bloated ass Windows and Mac that I don't know how people are still buying computers with 8GB of RAM, I remember when OSX 10.9 came out in 2013, that motherfucker was using 2GB immediately when you booted it, so 8GB was minimum back then, now you can still spend $700 on a macbook neo with 8GB because clown world.
>>109136674>I wish PlayStation had the ability to enable keyboard and mousePlaystation has supported mouse and keyboard for a while, the issue is that devs have to opt in to adding it to their game
>>109136894 (Me)My retarded ass forgot to link this: https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/List_of_console_games_that_support_keyboard_and_mouse#PlayStation_2The other Playstations are slightly below
>>109136894>>109136896I see. Fair enough.
>>109136552new video games aren't even good. they haven't been good for like 15 years now
>>109136536Doing multiple things at once, or hosting a bunch of services. Or anything with AI of modest size.
>>109136911The one that saddens me is the fact they killed off OtherOS, the PS5 would make a pretty decent PC>HomebrewYeah, but hacking anything current has too many hoops to jump through
people are seemingly fine even with macbook neo(8GB)i am not but also i can see how 16GB can be plenty for some
>>109136536no.especially since nvme drives basically are as fast as old ram.
>she fell for the 16GB RAM meme
>>109136945people would buy them just to use as a PC and Sony wouldn't make enough money on game licenses to justify selling hardware at a small loss (at least initially, normally computer hardware becomes cheaper over time but these days aren't normal.)remember the SADDAM IS BUILDING A PS2 SUPERCOMPUTER that was a meme in the 90s followed by the USAF actually doing it with the PS3 in the 2000s which made Sony kill Linux support off for good.
I bought 64gb 6000 cl30 ddr5 years ago because it was relatively cheap back when I had a 12900kf, I thought I may as well since it'll last me awhile and it has. I've only gotten close to using it all when compiling
>>109137062Yeah, I've always hated all the bullshit that comes from the hardware itself being sold at a loss. That being said, a big market for consoles in general is the normalfag that just buys COD and FIFA, those dudes are not installing Linux on the PS5 no matter how easy you make it. For the PS5 specifically I literally know no-one with one that's not that guy>followed by the USAF actually doing it with the PS3 in the 2000s which made Sony kill Linux support off for good.Actually they killed it off because they were afraid it'd be a vector for CFW. Which turned out to be ironic given that a big push for making CFW was getting OtherOS back

>>109136536My mentality is this, every system slowly degrades over time. Seeing as the picrel is DDR4 SODIMM, I'll keep a laptop in mind. With the exception of a rare few machines, most laptops have soldered CPU's. As parts age, the less upgradability you have, the less likely it is your computer will still continue to function at it's best. You need a good CPU, RAM and SSD to keep a computer running well. Most of the "standards" for current use cases will slowly creep onwards until your device is obsolete. The best way to give your device a long lifespan is to find a laptop motherboard with a ton of RAM and NVME m2 / SATA slots. (at least 2 RAM 1 NVME)That way as parts become more obsolete you can slowly increase the power of your computer while others are replacing theirs entirely.Keep in mind this is mainly a Winblows and Crapple problem, as their OS's are constantly becoming more and more bloated with spyware and undeletable "default programs" as time goes on. >t. 48GB RAM (4 RAM slots 3 NVME)
>>109136536Is there any legitimate reasons why you need more than 16kb of RAM?No.
>>109137459>all our modern 3nm technology on phones and we just brainrot instead of exploring the universeDon't depress me, Anon
If you want to run your OS in ram then yeah more is better

>>109137459Apollo didn't have ram.
>>109137464I remember that John Carmack once said something along the lines of>Your average phone is way more powerful than a GBA, but all that power is wasted because of JavaMore than 20 years later, the same shit applies to modern phones, both Snapdragons and Bionics are awesome chips, they're wasted because both Android and iOS are dogshit.Ignore the Macbook Neo, Apple made an A12 Mac Mini for developers to port shit before the M1 released, and that already could handle an actual OS pretty decently
>>109137700So true, even the internet is bloated as fuck to the point where it negates any hardware or connectivity advancements, if you told the 14yo me in 2009 that I was gonna have 32GB of RAM, and a 6 core processor that isn't $1000, and SSD that has no fuckin latency, and 450 mbps internet, I would've been blown away thinking websites and shit would be loading instantly in the future, but you get to 2026, and it's just as slow to load as the Core 2 duo days because everything is so heavy.
Multi media, video games, video, and Ai. If all you do is play shitty factorio or games from 2009 you are good with 8 gb
>>109137758The speed at which sites get worse faster than hardware improves is astonishing. Like many guys my age, I have a Shadowplay folder, when going through it, I found a video of me hanging out with some friends discussing shit; What we were discussing is irrelevant, what's relevant is that at one point one of them wants to show us a video on YouTube, and his 3rd gen i5+4GB of DDR3 RAM, while streaming a window on Discord and downloading a game on Steam, loaded that video instantly. This was 2019, and web shit was already going downhill, but I'm still surprised at how it was considerably faster than my 5800X with 32GB of DDR4 doing nothing in the background loads a YT vid today
>>109137805Yeah it's crazy how a quad core anything with 4GB of RAM went from being "overkill" to a joke in such a short period.
>>109136536That one time every 2 years whn I feel like loading up that one minecraft texture pack that uses like 48GB of memory.
ni
Electron vibeware likes randomly hoarding gigabytes of ram.
>>109136536Last time I assembled a PC with 16GB of ram it was ddr3. So like +12y ago. My current pc has 64 (4x16) GB ddr4. I assembled it in 2020 with 32 and upgraded a few years ago.I want to build a new rig, preferably 128GB of DDR5 of course. And I would have done so if not for the crazy prices. You can build a pc with 16GB of ddr5 today if you want. I mean if you like context switching, swapping and streaming games instead of running them..
>>109136667Star Citizen ate 29GB on my system
>>109136536Even if you're ignoring video game, laptop iGPU occupies RAM as well.
>>109139384same, my last machine with 16GB was my old 3rd gen i7 build. my current PC (AM4) had 64GB since I built it, then I upgraded to 128GB (bought another of the same 2x32GB kit) later on, a year and a half ago before prices went up. it's DDR4 but it still works finemy Thinkpad T480 has 64GB too, the kit cost me 100 bucks kek
>>109136536I unironically use 4gb ddr3 (the other 4gb stick died) on a 4th gen i5 on a prebuilt hp I got for free, and It just werks on debian stable + xfce for casual stuff, yet I see on hardware reviews people describing super computers as "good enough for casual use like word and browsing" like how bloated are those applications today? It seems like people are incapable of managing their processes and system. Sometimes when I use some slopware like instagram on chromium the system freezes then I just run OOM killer, that happens maybe one time a month if I'm not careful.>inb4 vidyaI don't.
>>109136536Let me guess, in 6 months it will be: let me guess, you need more than 8GB??
I hit close to full usage with 16GB at times. I like having 'breathing' room with 32GB. It didn't cost me much expanding to 32GB so I thought why not.
>>10913653616gb Ramdisk for torrents and firefox cache, 16gb for OS and gamesI'm not downloading shit straight onto my SSD or NVME drives
>>109136536I've got 20GB in use right now and I'm not even running a game. Yeah I guess I need more, though 64GB is more than plenty. On an older tablet I still use occasionally I've only got 8GB and I make do with that as well.
I need 64 GiB of RAM so clankers can't have it.
>>10913653664k is all you need.
>>109136536>Any reason to have more ram than the bare minimumYes , if you are using creative software like Davinci, Resolve , Blender>what if I'm not a creativeWell modern day Mac/PC operating system's suffer from biblical levels of gluttony at consuming ram. I always have libre wolf, Firefox, and tidal music open. Probably around 20 tabs open. Consuming 14 GB of ram. I think when I idle with no programs open it takes 8 gb. On Linux I get 3-4 GB on idle.>Unused ram is wasted ramWindows still runs like ass despite this
Yeah I do 3D sculptureMore RAM = more details
>>109136552Most new games are unoptimized dogshit
>>109136536What do you mean you need 32gb RAM? What's wrong with 16gb RAM. 8gb RAM is more than enough! 4gb of RAM is plenty adequate for your use cases. Okay fine, you can have your 2gb of RAM. Here's the 1gb of RAM you asked for. *hands you 512mb of DDR1*
>>109136536A few youtube tabs will piss away 16GB in no timeModern software and websites especially are a disaster, which will only get worse as vibe "coders" who wouldn't know a memory leak if it hit them over the head worm their way into places they really don't belong.
>>109139326"ni" what?
>>109136536Ask chatgpt how to setup zram on linux. It helped me save a ton of ram and now my system is usable with only 16GB.
>>109136536VMs are unusable with that much ram. ~12GB is what W10/W11 consume when they are busy with heavy tasks, so you are left with less than 4GB to spare. Building a DDR5 machine is pointless if you can't put 64GB in it at the beginning. I guess 16GB is enough if you just wanna run shitty office programs and watch YouTube.
>>109142572>VMs are unusable with that much ramNot even Anon, my Linux Mint is running Windows 10 with 4GB of RAM and Furryfox's bloated ass open with a bunch of tabs and it's using 9GB
>>109141191>Windows still runs like ass despite thisWindows has never been particularly great, but the speed gain from a RAM upgrade is genuinely noticeable. This has only become less relevant in recent years due to faster storage. I have this old laptop (1st gen mobile i5), and going from 2 to 8GB of DDR3 made it go from "tinkering machine" to "spare laptop I don't mind actually using", even with no SSD>Why not put Linux on it?I use it on my desktop, but this shit has an older NVidia GPU and it's not super stable on any distro I tried
