Is it a sign of the end times for personal computing?
>>109139613?it's reasonably priced now that apple increased all prices...
>>109139613No?
not at all, a shitty overpriced computer that gets obliterated by a $350 console from 6 years ago is just a sign of Valve's greed and nothing else.a $600 mac mini before price bumped stock runs out shits all over this thing
>>109139613A steam machine? No. It's just a pre built PC.
>>109139766A mac mini that can't play games? The actual value of mac mini is $2 because it's really big door stopper.
>>109139766>Valve's greed and nothing else. You're so right. Has absolutely nothing to do with the unprecedented shortage of RAM and storage
>>109139802>The actual value of mac mini is $2 because it's really big door stopper.Maybe if you're a toddler manchild and your only usecase of computing devices is gaming, for real people with real jobs and real usecases a $600 mac mini is a steal.
>>109139807Let's just casually ignore the fact that you can build a cheaper PC that's way stronger with more storage and memory. On parts DIY parts you pay a premium for while Valve doesn't have to.
>>109139811What is the steam machine supposed to be used for? Making toast? You're comparing a device for gaming with a mac mini that doesn't game, so of course the value of the later is $2. Compare properly next time.
>>109139823You're right but the steam machine isn't for you and me, it's for the guy that says he's only going to try Linux when SteamOS is is out for all PCs. That sort of guy that doesn't build his own PC. You pay premium for the brand and the assembly.
>>109139824ok PS5 then. it was being sold for $350 during last black friday with sportsball included. The Steam machine is around 20-30% weaker, has 50% less storage (667 vs 400 something usable) and comes with no controller. If we factor all that together the Steam Machine should be worth 200 eurodollars or less, maybe 300 to 400 if Valve wasn't subsidizing it.
>>109139766I’m not using your store, Timmy, and be sure to mention which games are using AI
>>109139851take your meds retard. Not everything revolves around your Epic & Valve consolewar
>>109139849PS5 might make sense but you're going to pay $120 every year to have online features, you're going to get censored versions of games, you will have a smaller library, you cannot use it as a PC if you want, and games are more expensive. I'd say it's comparable, you don't automatically win all with PS5.
>>109139802The newer Minis are surprisingly good. Does everything but play AAA slop gaymes but no one should be playing those anyway.>t. posted from my M4 Mac Mini
>>109139866Cry me a river. It has unbeatable value over the tranny machine and you know it, otherwise you wouldn't lie publicly on the internet
>>109139873Surprisingly good at being incompatible often because you have to emulator an x86 first, use proton on top of it, and maybe also have incompatibilities because it uses Metal instead of Vulkan? I mean, I guess it works in some games, but I'd use the safer option.
>>109139880It's not unbeatable and this has been discussed over and over again, so much that PC is now the biggest platform of all, compared to singular consoles. PC was always more expensive but more flexible. Steam Machine is just a pre built PC so same advantages and disadvantages. Nothing changed. It's not even a theoretical matter, the market as spoken, and PC is the best platform. By PC I mean personal computer, yes including stupid Macs, but also a generic PC with Linux.PlayStation, Xbox and Switch all share the same problem, you need to pay yearly and it's locked down.
>>109139613yes it is. building your own computer? lol!
>>109139907Lying about PS+ prices is not an argumentCensoring adult rated, obscure child porn games is not an argument,Arguing in favor of shovelware malware shitting up an entire storefront is not an argumentUsing "muh" PC when everyone already has atleast 2 pcs and 2 smartphones is not an argument. parroting 2010s reddit talking points like an LLM about digital pricing is not an argument. The Steam machine's value is correlated to its performance to price ratio. No one cares if you can watch porn on it while alt tabbing from your game after getting bored.
>>109139933Ok you keep thinking like a cave man while everyone else figured PC is the way. PC alone rivals all consoles combined in market share for a reason.
>>109139766>a $350 console from 6 years agoThat costs $600 now.
>>109139914But building your own is cheaper for likely more performance too.
>>109139940Steam's marketshare (MAU) is slightly above that of PS at 140 million vs 125 millionAll consoles combined outnumber PC.Even chinks, vatniks and indians don't count because they're already there and make up the majority of steam
>>109139967It is more performance. Not cheaper, though, even the trash build GN made (for the love of God don't buy that parts list) is only 71 USD cheaper. Once you upgrade the PSU to an acceptable model, it'll be close to the same price. If you want to get meaningful performance uplift, that'll cost you extra too.It will also be substantially bigger, more power hungry and likely louder.
>>109139994a build with an rtx 5060, ryzen 5, 32gb of ram, 1tb pcie 4 ssd & a relatively small case & psu cost around 1000 eurodollars or less.Take Valve's dick out of your throat before you choke to death.
>>109139933Yeah instead just bend over to Sony and take how much ever they're trying to shove inside you.
>>109140028Why do you need to project your homoerotic fantasy?
>>109139984Rival doesn't mean it's bigger, it means it's comparable. PlayStation has 70% of the console market so being near is bad for PC vs consoles. In any case, that doesn't mean crap about the "end of times for personal computing" when the PC gaming market is growing faster than consoles. If you want to believe a Mac mini is good for gaming or that a PlayStation is automatically better, you do you, but apparently that's not the trend, or the end of personal computer, specially because of the steam machine.
>>109139811Any job the Mac Mini can do, so can the Steam Machine. Neither can do anything computationally powerful, so they're restricted to basic shit. Professionals who need good machines will get a 10k dollar workstation from their jobs.
>>109140009No it doesn't, fuckhead. Post pcpartpicker list or stfu. I made several builds and I don't see how you're gonna get that config down to 1000 USD. Prove it.
>>109140103i never said Mac Mini is good for gaming, but as a general purpose computer it BTFOs the Steam Machine in everything.
>>109140124https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jHYWck
>>109140046You just sound like a faggot so that's what I imagine you do.
>>109140166Ok, you're right if you use DDR4 and mATX not ITX. Also you forgot CPU cooler. The box cooler is loud.
>>109140188>The box cooler is loud.Yeah let me just waste away 50 dollars to some corsair jew to make the fan a little less loud because it the hum will hurt my teenie tiny ears :(
>>109140197Why build a shit computer when you can build a good one? It's hard to take your steam machine alternative seriously when you care this little about how it is to actually live with. You'd also have to use windows 11 on that one which kinda blows if you want to use controller.
>>109140219>Why build a shit computer when you can build a good one?the computer in the link is already a good computer>It's hard to take your steam machine alternative seriouslyIt's hard to consider the steam machine as a good computer or anything of good value>about how it is to actually live withI regularly use old noisy computers, old consoles, CRT monitors, etc. I'm not a sperg and i don't give a shit about some slight fan noise>You'd also have to use windows 11 You can use troonix on it like the steam machine, thank god however i only use MacOS & pre-2010s windows.>which kinda blows if you want to use controller.W11 works fine with any controller outside dualsense.
>>109139615>overpriced shit isnt overpriced because everything else is overpriced toofpwp, kys
>>109140261No it's not. It's doesn't have a good CPU cooler. It also doesn't have the promised 1TB of storage by the way. I don't know anything about that particular SSD mode either. If I was gonna build a steam machine competitor and I wasn't even constrained by an ITX cube case then I'd rather spend more money and make it actually better. Like using a 16GB 9060 XT.>I regularly use old noisy computersWell I don't use an old noisy computer with a CRT monitor for my day to day usage so I can't relate. >W11 works fine with any controller outside dualsense. You clearly haven't used Windows without m&k. You pretty much need the Steam Controller at that point. I have no fucking clue how you're controlling Windows with an Xbox controller.
>>109139811>$600 mac mini$800 as of this week.
>>109140166>Steam Machine: 3.8L>Deepcool Shitbox: 31LThe form factor is basically the point of the Steam Machine. (You) cannot build anything even remotely as powerful in same form factor, or anything close to it. No wonder it sold out in Japan straight away.
>>109140415https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nbnGJwHere you go, 4.5L ITX, Thermalright cooler, Silverstone Flex PSU and a significantly faster desktop 5060 compared to the 7600 laptop gpu in the steam machine. All for only $30 more which you can probably cut down even more by getting a 7500F.
>>109139613No, it just means that you are gonna have to live a little tighter and keep stuff a little longer.
>>109140451FSP PSU*
>>109140451That's almost a good build, why the fuck do you use that RAM tho? Does literally nothing else fit or what?
Personal computing is literally the most successful surveillance and goy pacifying program in history. This place is actually full of normalcattle who were "redpilled" by Gamer Nexus, a jewtube hardware shill.
>>109140451>larger>heavier>more expensive>loud low-profile GPU>loud server PSU>nigabyte anythingYeah, I'm thinking I'm buying a GabeCube.
>>109140502Because 1x16 is also used in the steam machine. You can get a 2x8 for $20 more.
>>109140508No, I am not talking about 1x16. It's 2400MHz DDR5. 2800MHz DDR5 is perfectly common and I don't think it's even more expensive.It's also CL40. CL40 at 2400MHz, dude.
>>109140505>heavierAre you a woman? Its the same volume as the steam machine anyway.
>>109140517Its DDR5-4800 which is JEDEC standard. There’s a 6000CL30 one for 20$ more if you want though.
>>109140546DDR5-5600 is also JEDEC standard.
>>109140282It's overpriced but everything is overpriced because of AI. It's simply not their fault.
>>109139613Isn't that a personal computer?
>>109140451>Pay about the same amount of money>Get something that consumes more power and is bigger>Get the exact same performanceWhat's the point?
>>109141172Anon, these people live in a bubble. They don't get the small factor popularity by most people, especially Japan where it sold out instantly, that it will inevitably establish Linux as a serious gaming OS Family, and that Japan will being the indie games again. They don't get, just forget it. The bubble is too strong.
>>109141251>L-listen if you live in a commie shithole that only gives you .0000001 square inches of space this is perfect!!
>>109139766None of those prices are real anymore.
>>109141172>>Get the exact same performanceAre you saying the PS5 has 5060 ti performance and the PS5 Pro has 5090 performance?
>>109139615you should consider suicide, you retarded moroni see someone else already had the same idea for you, i am glad
>>109139836That guy doesn't exist
>>109139613Of course. If your tunnel vision is that bad, it’s the end times.
As with any prebuilts made to fit a shape you're paying a premium for mah small and cute shape. It's not a sign of anything, except overpriced components. You still have a choice to use that grand to build your own and it will obliterate that cube
>>109139766>overpriced'truth nuke. I don't really see much appeal for this kind of product>mogged by consolesmehhh ig. remember its a pc so you can choose whatever framerate or quality you desire. console framerate is decided by the devs.>350it is not fair to compare used prices to msrp. ofc the older product is cheaper. also the ps5/xbox series x are 6 years old and are 650 msrp. they were 500 on launch .>le greedy valve.no shit. also the hardware cost was due to shortage of ram/storage.
>>109142173>remember its a pc And? sure it's nice if you want a general purpose machine to file your taxes in but it still gets outperformed by a 6 year old machine and gigamogged in terms of storage and accessories.>350>it is not fair to compare used prices to msrp350 is the discounted black friday price>ofc the older product is cheaper.Once again, and? the steam machine has no controllers, is weaker and has less storage than that 6 year old device, it's literally on par with budget e-waste, which it most likely end up as considering you can't upgrade it.>no shit. also the hardware cost was due to shortage of ram/storage.shortages are just a convenient excuse for all these companies to raise prices beyond what the actual shortage is costing them.
>>109142173>shortage of ram/storageThere is no shortage, you're just poor.
>>109141172>exact same performance valvedrones really want to psyop you into believing a cut down laptop rx7600 is on par with a desktop 5060 kek
>>109139613Yes, soon we'll all be stuck using thin clients streaming Windows 365, you won't even have the luxury of ChromeOS which at least lets you run Linux software and has some internal storage.
>>109143638Speak for yourself. I don't need windows, I don't play games.
>>109143642I'm not just talking about games, I'm talking about computing in general. Prices are going to get so high that actual computers are unaffordable to anyone except businesses and everyone's going to be forced to use subscription cloud based operating systems on locked down devices with no internal storage of any kind.
>>109142407no, it's verbatim and explicitly a shortagemodels that used to be available are no longer in productioni'm not poor enough, like you, to consider used
>>109143664I don't see that as realisticWe can go to netbooks with 150gb ssd internal soldered storage before that happens. There is still plenty of cheap cloud storage if you know where to look.Think outside the box on this one.You should also try selling products to the businesses. Accelerate this transition. I actively market thin clients towards businesses because it saves on emissions, power, cost, all around.
>>109143667imagine being proud of spending full price just to say that you did. enjoy wasting your money i guess. this isn't how you cultivate wealth lol
>>109139802https://www.gamemac.com
>>109143689huh?
>>109143702Exactly what I said. If you can't understand it, it isn't my problem
>>109143709ah, one of the inarticulatehave a good day
>>109143695iCucks must be desperate for a sale lmao
>>109143759I’m still using the same mac I bought 6 years ago. I play games on my PC because it’s better suited for the task because I built it for that purpose, but the option is there for the 5 people that actually want to do that.
>>109139613Yes. They invested all that money into infrastructure thats not going to pay its self off. So you'll pay for it, and own nothing. This was obviously coming from miles away
>>109139613It ain't that deep, man. It's just another venture by Valve that's well outside their area of expertise.(which hasn't been anything other than skimming off the top of other people's work for over a decade now)
I have the latest Mac mini and it’s a better computer and cheaper. Just get that. It runs steam and proton-ge just the same as Linux and you get good programs like garage band and a stable os that doesn’t reinstall itself if the ssd gets too full.
>>109145174I got one. It’s nice. Works for 180hz 1080p gaming.
>>109139933>when everyone already has atleast 2 pcsYou are completely delusional, normal people don't own a PC anymore. The closest thing they have to a PC is an iPad. Do you think it's still 2006 or something?
>>109139613No? With the sales volumes the Valve Box will get at this price point, there's no chance of Steam OS becoming anything other than another meme linux distro; the "windows killer" for gaymers meme can be laid to rest. Price conscious people will still build their own 'puter or buy a pre-built and get much better value. Despite all the fanfare, this machine is going to way of the original steam machine. Not becuase the price is too high, but the price is too because Valve doesn't care about the product. And Valve not caring is going to lead to this not amouting to anything more than another overpriced pre-built with a novelty formfactor, the steam machine will have the market impact of a random iteration of a random dell alienware and honestly that's a shame.
You can literally just get a better PC for 600 eurodollars and spend the remaining ~400 some on the gay steamcontroller and a lifetime supply of shitty tier 2 games.
>>109146724Not small factor. It's not comparable. Also Nvidia, doesn't work very well on Linux.
>>109143664Maybe for the kids. But for adults that ship sailed with the apple 2. People will just fuck off from co.puting entirely and focus on electing representatives that actually have their best interests. Nobody is interested in a self obsessed state technocracy if it can't provide them with tech.
>>109145726Normal people (excluding boomers and zoomers)
so i got pretty unlucky and i didn't win the lottery. should I just get a framework desktop?
>>109139613Why does this thing have such outdated hardware? The GPU uses the same power as a desktop RTX 5070 undervolted yet is 2.5x slower.
>>109139613unironically yes imomanufacturers are collectively realizing personal computing scales poorly especially compared to datacenter units where you can approach with the maximalist mindseteven if the ai overvaluation adjusts i think this triggered the reasoning behind the trend which probably will be irrecoverable for consumers for a long time
>>109149647Because it's a laptop in a box made from e-waste for some cancelled VR taken off AMD's floor.
>>109149623Buy a mac mini, way cheaper.
>>109146724Small form factor and power savings is a bonus towards the gabecube. What isn't is cost and performance. You could just suck it up and go slightly larger with a SFF case and build it yourself hell you might end up with better parts but it will be equally or more expensive for a loss in space savings.
nobody makes videogames worth a shit anymore anyways, the fuck you need insane modern consumer hardware for?
>>109139613It's the start. Actually a known and trusted company making a private and capable machine that can be used as either a console or personal computer or both, giving the user control of the system. No need to change operating system to be in control. When you run desktop mode without having steam running it is actually just in your control. Only FOSS software is running. Completely yours and capable of many tasks.
>>109150551Yeah, pretty much. A 600€ prebuilt tops the cube. If you DIY you can probably get a system that tops the cube in a smaller case for the same price. The power savings are pretty good though. If there's a 30€ delta in yearly operating costs then you'll break even in a little over 10 years.
https://www.metapcs.com/products/steamrollerIf more prebuilts are made with steamOS preinstalled valve won. They gave them specs and a price point to reach. Steam machine was always a vehicle for steamOS.
So is the new OS worth using?
this was the cut and dried proof that it's done.
>>109139613No, it is a sign of the software company that always makes overpriced hardware making overpriced hardware once again.I hate that this board is so full of retards.
>>109150310can't play games + i don't really like macos on desktop
>>109150902I wonder what the price to eff/pref ratio is when you account for Titanium power supplies and AMD's G series CPU's when compared to what the gabecube.
>>109154048Correction i meant to say F series CPU's since not having a built in GPU would in theory save power and you could always change the load out to TDP power savings in bios which does work btw. the G series is really good if you just need a computer that doesn't game.
>>109140282that is how the free market works, yes
>>109139613it indoubtably is
>>109149054>>109150551Not a single soul gave a shit about the Steam machine form factor. At best it was a side effect from integration and a smaller system is generally easier to ship and will cost less. Now for some reason the size is being heralded as the main point of the console because everyone is fucking retarded nowadays and can't admit when something is shit.
>>109154134>everyone is fucking retardedEveryone is paid off.
>>109139613Nah, just a sign of valve's incompetence. I've seen tons of backlash online, people are closing their steam accounts, moving to other platforms like GOG or Epic to get their games, dropping PC gaming entirely for consoles etc.Valve basically burnt every last shred of their goodwill with the SM pricing and the deck's price increase.Every intelligent person is rightfully pissed off.Only shills and cucks still use Steam, or pay for their hardware.
>>109154158The most fake post I've ever read Yeah brother let's all move to Epic
>>109154206I got free games from Tim.I never got anything from (((Gabe))).
>>10915415899.99% of people don't give a single fuck because they were never going to buy it in the first place as they already own computers which play games, by virtue of having Steam accounts in the first place.
>>109152631I dont understand
>>109154158>I've seen tons of backlash online, people are closing their steam accounts, moving to other platforms like GOG or Epic to get their games, dropping PC gaming entirely for consoles etc.And then everyone clapped and you woke up.
>>109139613looks kinda cute :3
>>109154134>At best it was a side effect from integrationIt's a fucking laptop but missing the display, keyboard, trackpad, but has the power supply built in and the whole thing is folded into a cube. Anyone claiming the form factor is something amazing is fucking braindead.
>>109139613Test
