When do I get to actually use the OS?
>>
What CPU do you have?
>>
>gentoo on VM
I don't think you know what the point of gentoo is.
Spoiler: it's USEflags.

when u change yr makeopts to something not retarded

Intel i5-7400
>>
>>109144318
You're using make -j $(nproc), right? Shouldn't take more than half an hour unless you compile a retarded number if drivers.
>>
>>109144340
I’m only using the flags recommend in the installation handbook. Does using -j make that much of a difference?

>>
>>109144366
Yes, without it you're using only a single core to compile. You can replace $(nproc) with the number of cores like make -j8.
>>
>>109144399
It has 4 cores, 10 GB of RAM and 100 GB of storage.

>The MAKEOPTS variable defines how many parallel compilations should occur when installing a package. As of Portage version 3.0.31[1], if left undefined, Portage's default behavior is to set the MAKEOPTS jobs value to the same number of threads returned by nproc.

You're using portage to compile the kernel?
>>
>>109144291
skill issue, i installed gentoo on a 25 year old laptop in two days including X and firefox, just compile faster
>>
>>109144454
I’m using emerge. I don’t know how many cores it’s actually using and I don’t really want to stop it a check when it’s been running all day.

It finished building anyway… now it’s time to configure the system.
>>
>>109144475
Did you even configure the kernel?? You know, drivers, file systems, etc. If not you'll compile EVERYTHING which is indeed going to take a while.

>Did you ev-ACK
I am following the instructions as provided in the handbook. Please refer to the handbook if you want to know how I installed the system.
>>
>>109144870
That's a new thing and it sucks and doesn't count. You didn't really install Gentoo.
>>
>>109144291
people love to say gentoo wiki is really good and it is but the install instructions are kinda not good
and the formatting is a bit weird too so i dont blame you for this op

Pussy. Install on bare metal or fuck off.

That’s only for Debian.
