the platforms were fine 5, 10, 15 years ago. reddit was a fantastic solution for what it was. it's literally better than a forum. forums are isolated and poorly indexed. search functionality often sucks. digging through a 100 page thread to find an important post sucks.

the platform is impeccable. i don't know how you make something better than that.

You HAD the opportunity to keep up with the modern internet, all it would have taken is making some concessions on a few short things. Matrix could be a popular alternative to discord if it had a centralized auth server. Bluesky would be a WILDLY popular alternative to X if you could set your profile public. reason why normies like using discord is because they think of their computer as a magic box and when they use discord it feels like the magic is contained and isolated from them. using teamspeak or mumble (or any program which exposes any part of the magic) is terrifying to them in case they accidentally interfere with the magic and break the computer

this is done intentionally to corral people onto centralised, state-controlled platforms. also most forum software have addons which allow the OP to select a best answer or an updoot system if you are using for strictly utalitarian purposes. as far as discussion goes reddit is far inferior to traditional forums because any unpopular opinions are censored

NTA, but what do you mean? When I used to host a personal website, I was writing HTML by hand and using a few small templates and scripts I wrote myself to format it the way I liked it. I never found ot difficult to make a functional website.
