Do you think when people are looking in the desktop thread at desktops that they actually look to see how many packages you have?
>>
arch is the ideal linux distro for when you need a linux command line on a flash drive, and posting your desktop online. not much use outside of that, might as well just use ubuntu if you're still into the desktop linux meme
>>
>>109163024
I hate Ubuntu. I immediately lose respect for anyone who runs it, and especially those who advocate it. Here’s why:
Name 20 features, release-for-release or year-for-year that have not come from Redhat. Redhat basically runs the show when it comes to Linux. This includes things like NetworkManager, Gnome, Xorg, GCC, glibc, LVM, KVM, kernel, file systems et al. Redhat has developers making significant contributions to the entire FOSS software stack upstream.
Ubuntu on the other hand pulls most of the heavy weight packaging from Debian with each release. They then perform minor patching and testing. It generally lags behind Fedora by a release or two in parts of the software stack. I never see @ubuntu or @cannocial email addresses in upstream changelogs.
So tell me again, how exactly does Ubuntu innovate? They even struggle to release a new theme with each release, and artwork is about the only original thing in Ubuntu.
Yes, Ubuntu is stable because they are standing on the shoulders of giants. Most of the hard work is hashed out before they ever import software into their repositories. This is fine, and what FOSS is all about, but I prefer to be in with the leaders rather than the followers.
What really irks me and what has really brewed my hatred are Ubuntu users. They seem to think Ubuntu is responsible for all that is good in the FOSS world. I have just proven how false this is. In my experience, Ubuntu support mechanisms (IRC, mailing lists, forums) are much less helpful than the alternative.
If you want a nice desktop distro, run Fedora or OpenSUSE. If you like control, run Gentoo. If you need stability, run RHEL/CentOS or Debian. But please, don’t feed the idiot magnet that is Ubuntu!

For quickshell there's a really good setup, the one I use here >>109163137 it's by a dude named HANCORE. You'll have to modify it a bit because it's meant for Omarchy so you'll need to do things like create a colors.toml file with your color palette in it and point Theme.qml at it, so that the bar will use your theme colors and some of the bar widgets may pull data from shit cachy doesn't have by default and I'm not sure if the install script will pull them automatically.

Anyway, HANCORE-linux on GitHub, the quickshell-dots repo

It's niri, I don't usually open that many windows so it's easy to differentiate them, also just look at the bar to see which windows I'm on, if that's what you're asking.

yea it's not even in the same league anymore. I run a 1080p 180hz display with a 5060 and I never see below 200fps in most games, but on Windows games like would struggle to get past 70fps, in games like Indiana Jones, I saw an immediate 20% boost im performance going from like 80fps to well into the hundreds. And like look it's cool if you use Windows but acting like Linux is mental illness when it runs Windows games better than Windows itself is a bit of a stretch. Doom DA runs over 200fps all day on this beast on Bazzite. Windows? Can't keep up. Anticheat games run fine, online multiplayer in games run fine. There are like 9 games that don't run on Linux these days. None of them are worth playing. Maybe Destiny 2. And that is a hard maybe. If a game doesn't run initially, I load it up in Proton-GE and it runs.
>>
>>109165771
I have a gaming laptop, because I was sick of the retarded prices of desktop GPUs during the crypto mining boom, and I was never getting close to 144fps on my 144Hz display, not even dropping it down to 1080p. Now with Bazzite, that machine gets 200+fps in the same games at 4k medium-high or 1080p ultra. Ryzen 9, rtx 3070, 32GB RAM, 4th gen NVMe. It should have been just fine on Windows 11, but I would rarely see more than 70 fps in most games. Anything made after 2019? I'm lucky to see 50fps on Windows. On Bazzite, I can play the newest games on 1080p ultra and see 200+ fps. The only time it drops to console level fps is with ray tracing shit turned on, which never really impressed me to begin with.
>>
>>109165927
here's the thing, I am a Windws fanboy, but I can't justify Windows 11. I liked Windows 3.1, Windows 98SE, Windows 2000, disliked XP initially and used 2000 until about XP sp2's release, built a system for Vista x64, and never had any issues with it, Windows 7 was obviously better though, so I loved 7. I loved 8 and 8.1. Windows 10 with the forced updates and telemetry spyware turned me off, so I started looking into Linux as the end of 7 approached, and, outside of testing Windows 11, I have very little experience with it. The ads, bloatware, forced ai bullshit, telemetry spyware, and forced updates continue, so why the fuck would I use Windows? Especially when Linux beats the snot out of Windows in games?

>proprietary browser
Whining about "proprietary" means nothing if you don't compile your precious FOSS yourself. But I know for a fact you download pre-compiled binaries like everyone else and whenever a FOSS project goes to shit you simply expect someone else to pick up the mantle. Ergo, you don't truly care about FOSS at all.

Neither do I, if there is a FOSS project that does something better than a proprietary one, I'll use FOSS. If a proprietary project does something better than a FOSS project, I'll use proprietary. Buying into the FOSS ideology is pointless if you're not willing to actually use it's benefits and contribute back, instead treating FOSS software like any other product.

There is no better browser for me than Vivaldi and anyone trying to shill me a """as good if not better""" FOSS alternative should eat shit. You don't know what are my needs and how I use my software so stop trying to convince me to use what you're using. I've tried multiple browsers and always prefer Vivaldi.

Pretty catchy too, and I also like its whole zombie outbreak aesthetic

>I know for a fact you download pre-compiled binaries like everyone else
Anon, I compile my browser because I need very specific patches, and my browser of choice isn't even packaged on my distro.
All the time I need to modify the software I compile, not just my browser. Sometimes I need to fix things, add new features, use a specific fork.
> whenever a FOSS project goes to shit you simply expect someone else to pick up the mantle.
Except, of course, when I keep my own modified versions on disk, and upkeep my own forks. Because often times I do not like the directions of projects and want to keep old software. I DO pick up the mantle. Sometimes I even publish these versions for friends. Except, with proprietary software, I can't do shit if the project spirals out of control. I have to be a cuck and beg the programmers. Just like you, using cuck software.
>Buying into the FOSS ideology is pointless if you're not willing to actually use it's benefits
Just because YOU don't take advantage of FOSS doesn't mean others don't. You use windows because you have no need to modify any software, probably because you don't do much with your computer.

Why are you even on the technology board?

I forget how fond I am of my storm cloud theme. It's quite pleasant on the eyes when I'm working late into the night
