I'm tempted to try shoving a 165Hz panel in my T14s gen 6 AMD, just so it can handle moonlight better when I want to remote into my gaming rig. Heck I could slap frame generation on old games just to get extra smoothness where they have hard caps with lossless scaling.

I bought a 2nd hand t480, good value, clunky 75% battery.

It died recently. Laptop said 4%, not charging, died due to wear.

6 cell pack.
I take it apart and find that one of the cells in one of the pairs leaked and weakened the strip connecting it to BMS. It's possible I disconnected that pair while cracking battery open.

I measure pairs: 3.8v, 3.8v, 3.4v

I excise bad cell, clean contacts, resolder tabs so now there are 2.5 cells.

Plug battery back in: 0%, not charging.

Reopen pack, now I am charging lone cell to bring it inline with others.
I am waiting, but not expecting miracle.

What can I do?

Not the best deal but not a ripoff either. The model is kind of a dud in having the same Skylake chips as the P53 but with undervolting blocked, but it's nice that the GPU is replaceable. I brought the laptop home, looked up the specs: a 6th-generation i7 and a crappy dedicated 940m graphics card.
Basically, I bought two 8GB DDR3 memory modules, grabbed an old 240GB Crucial BX SSD that was lying around, a new battery, and a Full HD IPS screen.

I'm replacing the screen on my T14 gen 1 tonight. I have it opened up, the battery is disconnected, the old screen is off. What I'm wondering though is-

1) how do I know whether the ribbon cable is actually secure?
2) my tape that tapes down the ribbon cable isn't very good anymore. Is it important enough that AI should postpone the repair or can I do something like tape over the previous tape with duct tape or something temporarily?

This is the first time I've ever done this sort of repair. Is duct tape a terrible idea because of thermals? Can I just leave it untaped?

Yes, this just has a basic trigger board setup inside to request the voltage and runs that into the barrel plug. These are safe to use. The cable you plug into the power brick should be safe too, because it will need an e-marker when you actually need to worry about wire gauges.

I start my first year of uni as a pre health major next month and I'm going to buy a thinkpad (either this or a percision/elitebook/zbook) to use as my main laptop. Got my i5 T500 P14s Gen 2 two months ago, installed Debian on it. It's great, I really wish I had something like this back in undergrad.

However, it runs hot and the Nvidia drivers get finicky. It's not that bad after some configuring with Claude, so if you want an easy time, go for AMD. But AMD does not give you a dGPU.

Portability might be a concern for you if you do note-taking with a laptop (I don't, I do pen and paper and then copy to Anki and Obsidian). But you will have to give powerpoint presentations requiring you to haul it to school, a chunky beast of a P15 plus its brick will be a pain. T14/P14s Gen 2 will be modern enough while still giving you good I/O.

Biochem.. my course had several classes where we had to use specialized software. We had to dabble coding in Python, you might do BioPython. None of it required too heavy compute power, but your course might need simulate molecules, proteins, etc. in 3D with PyMOL, weak integrated graphics will choke there.

I hope your uni has a GPU cluster for you to SSH into for real heavy work, mine didn't.

Get lots of RAM, Genomics, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics will need a lot of it, 8GB is not enough, 16GB is minimum, mine has 16GB SODIMM + 8GB soldered. BLAST and Bioconductor are memory hogs, plus lots of CPU resources.

I would bet that all of your peers and profs will be in the Google ecosystem like back in my uni. We almost never touched Microsoft's office software, everything was in Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Meet, etc. A glorified Chromebook will do for this use case. So I hope yours will too, because everything will nicely sandboxed in your browser of choice.

The only time MS Word came into serious use was polishing up the formatting of my thesis, at that point LibreOffice is more than good enough.

In that case, go for a dual boot. /fwt/ will get you the IoT Enterprise LTSC .iso's. My P14s G2 would get stuck updating the firmware and BIOS overnight burning hot, but booting into IoT LTSC and Lenovo's update utility pulled it off perfectly.

Regarding light gaming and local AI...

The Intel with Quadro T500 is the superior choice. but you'll have to survive the regular Linux humiliation ritual of finagling drivers. Fine with my Debian (After days of configuring, I got dkms to auto-reinstall it if it breaks after a kernel update), don't know about Mint/CachyOS, I heard they handle it fine enough.

Having dedicated VRAM lets me run a Gemma 4 E2B at 20tok/sec, and E4B at 5-10 tok/sec (compiling llama.cpp from source and bash script autism is required to get E4B to fit in the 4GB of VRAM though). The Radeon will pull from system RAM, extremely slow.

For gaming, Radeon is good I guess, but the T500 is like a GTX 1650 with workstation drivers, tuned for stability rather than performance. Either way, only light gaming will be pleasantly usable, but your 3D molecular science software will be happy.

There's a version with Nvidia graphics too. Lovely carry piece when I just want something light. The i7-quad makes a huge difference, you don't need the 3840 but it does work in it. W10 IoT LTSC flies on it with the quad core.

T14 Gen 2 comes with DDR4 but also a 16:9 screen.
Gen 3 and 4 may be DDR5 but also bring a 16:10 screen and the RAM is soldered on so maybe they won't be as badly priced.

I don't remember there ever being an option like that, but you should be able to control the fan from the OS. Try thinkfan, nbfc, tpfancontrol. On Linux you can also change the speed by hand by reloading the thinkpad_acpi module with fan_control=1 and playing with /proc/acpi/ibm/fan. If nothing works, maybe update the firmware.
