>>109179835if you only ever watch the things you download on the same computer you download them on then plex does nothing for you.plex itself is free though for the basic use case of if you want to watch things on a tv or other device in your own household. i watch all my movies and japanese cartoons on my tv by running the plex server on my pc and a companion plex app on my nvidia shield, which lets me browse a list of neatly categorized media with thumbnails, descriptions, etc with the remote. there are other ways of doing this, obviously so if your tv is within hdmi cable distance of your pc, but it's a better experience to just use plex for it.when you see anything about plex costing money it's specifically the premium "plex pass" which they've locked some bullshit behind, most notably the ability to stream your plex server full of pirated media to any friend you share access with. they have a monthly subscription for that but they also offer the "lifetime pass" which i think these days probably serves more as bad PR for how expensive it is than anyone actually forking over $1000 to the company in one go.
