No, it doesn't that's not exactly how YouTube works.

Delusion. YouTube is better platform the before and that year before, every year it has been going worse. YouTube was last remotely "good" in 2013 then 2014 came and then it seriously has gone to shit.

Finding interesting videos on there is hard, the youtubers I use to watch became sell outs or became insane. There's more things to talk about like political censorship but I don't feel like talking about it.
Here's an ancient video I found on youtube.

There is no such thing as "ad blocking". The web is a pull medium, not a push medium. I merely decline to request ads. - Anon

I am sad that I never made a screenshot of it. It was posted here on /g/ and I think screenshots of it existed, but i think there are hard to find now
>>

Tell Twitch users not to request baked-in ads. Soon on Youtube, probably.
>>
>>109194315
well said. in the old days I very happily used Lynx to browse the web. If someone coded a text-driven browser that could actually visually represent modern sites it could be really awesome. I'm talking a way to draw frames and have newer tech forms and such be represented on screen in a way that allows you to use them. Images and videos are easy to make clickable to "show" it is more of formatting and interactivity that needs to be addressed.

adsense
youtubers where incentivized to create low quality slop to get people to watch ads on there channel.
most of the problems the site has with content come from people trying to farm out viewers for ad money. Elsa gate and mr beast style videos would go away without adsense money.
end adsense fix youtube

that surprise face BS thumbnail meme started around 2015-2016, it clearly wasn't a thing in early 2010s Youtube. They still had outline text and fancy backgrounds but not the surprise face or overt smile with thumbups/huge emojis.

If you go back before 2012 you see the blue background on white text YT thumbnails or generic title cards, with quality thumbnails that have effort being an exception. And if you go back further you realize in 2008 only professionals had thumbnails and normies had whatever frame youtube choose.

No. I want to see the list of results in reverse chronological order. And that's gone.
Moreover, even the "popularity" sorting is still algorithmic instead of based on view count. There is currently no way to see search results without interference.

>>109197836
>attracts clicks
does it tho? we've never seen that data we just assume YT is doing the rational business thing. that's not a very good assumption.

it is important to note that YT survives on advertising revenue and retards are the best people to market to because you can trick them into buying stuff with ads. for this reason it is fine for them to lose the smart or savvy audience with bad thumbnails because they wouldn't buy anyway. The thumbnails filter out anyone who isn't a retard.

Advertising-funded platforms are the worst. The entire model is guaranteed to produce garbage. If someone made a different kind of platform you would not use it, and that is why this circumstance exists.
>>
>>109189736
The onions face is psychological manipulation. They make the expression of the emotion they want you to feel, that gets the best dopamine response out of your brain. If you see a shocked face in the thumbnail you'll feel a faint shock that tricks your brain into thinking "I should check this out, this might be interesting" before your eyes even read the title of the video.
>>
>>109199863
There's a classic fable of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" that speaks to this mechanism. The lesson is that if you abuse it you desensitize the observer and it will have negative consequences for you. Most people are apparently too stupid to understand this point.

In the context of YT it means the thumbnail effect you describe eventually turns into a negative indicator and people not only stop watching videos featuring it but start actively avoiding the site entirely because it is associated with these shock-scare images. The same happens here when the catalog is spammed with garbage images for threads.

>The lesson is that if you abuse it you desensitize the observer
My question would be whether you can desensitize the lizard portion of your brain that responds to this. Is it just too deep down in there to really be affected one way or the other? What if they can keep spamming this shit forever?
>>

Youtube is in the process of destroying their platform with deeply retarded algorythms, corp manipulation of views and placing in the feed, manipulation of numbers to silence and quiet ban creators, rampant RAMPANT content theft, and AI.
Pretty soon Youtube is going to be absolutely worthless. It kind of already is as a media platform.
Once everyone realizes that guys like logan paul and mr.beast are entirely fake popular and everyone else is expendable and will be robbed of their earnings by claiming the video violates terms it will be kind of fucked.

>>
>>109194095
Unfortunately yes. It was popularized by Mr Beast. He literally crunched the numbers and saw that whenever he put a face like that in a thumbnail, it would get more views than one without it. Other YouTubers then copied it because they want to make as much money as him.
>>
>>109201491
>It was popularized by Mr Beast
It was already a big thing long before, especially in any video targeting kids.
Some youtubers actually had to stop doing it (thankfully) after Mr Beast got popular because the association drove away their usual demographics
>>
>>109189736
YouTube's content has always been garbage. It's always been letsplayers, vloggers, shitposts and clips of Family Guy. There's never been a standard to uphold so whether or not it's gotten 'worse' is irrelevant.
The software has gotten tangibly worse though. The website takes up 64 GB of RAM, the mobile app is a glitchy bloated mess, PiP only works sometimes and not others, they've consistently gotten rid of the few features people liked (e.g. top comments, dislikes, 5-star ratings visible before clicking, personalized channel CSS layouts, DMs, etc), and there's a fuckload of intrusive, mandatorily-viewed ads and even the quality of those ads has taken a nosedive. It used to be ads for, say, Progressive or perhaps a new movie that is coming out soon. Now it's AI-generated commercials go obvious scams and Temu garbage.

In short, money happened.

It's OK, though. TikTok, the hot new thing on the block, will expand and eventually usurp YouTube's position, and YouTube will go the way of MySpace. We just have to wait it out.
One thing's for certain given Google's and YouTube's conduct history: they won't learn a thing on their way out.

>desensitize to it
A strong-minded person can but the use of those images reveals that the content behind them after clicking into the video will be just as bad. The same people who can desensitize will figure this out, and get the same result.

Someone who is willing to use psychological response hijacks to get attention to their thumbnail is not going to do so in front of a video that is honest, thorough, and direct. The wise person quickly learns that you're not missing anything by ignoring the site. That is the risk to the platform - losing its sense of being essential to the user.
>>
>>109207918
>The wise person quickly learns that you're not missing anything by ignoring the site. That is the risk to the platform - losing its sense of being essential to the user.
The wise are already using an adblocker. So the site losing them isn't an issue as far as YT is concerned. They might even celebrate it as their bandwidth isn't being wasted on "freeloaders."
