How is a forward deployed engineer different than a consulting firm? Or just a company representative? It feels like its just a bullshit term people are using to escape the stigma of consulting

I have a deep hatred of software tasks that take 10-25 seconds. It's just long enough to keep you waiting, but not long enough to let you get up and do other shit. If I ever program a user initiated task that can't run in the background and is in that nigger time spot, I intentionally slow it down by adding sleep statements and a progress bar.So even if the task finishes in 20 seconds I slow it down to 2:30s. Go get some coffee or do other shit.

>talking about recent movies I watched with coworkers>"That sounds like a really cool movie, anon. Started a new job this week and I learned developers have no local admin access. Every single thing has to be requested, and it’s slowing me down considerably. Onboarding is already a huge PITA and the cherry on top is needing to create a ticket for every little thing I need.It took 2 days to get Homebrew installed on my Macbook, but come to find out I have to raise a ticket to install any package. Every ticket goes to India and they remote in and install with admin access. And I have not even scratched the surface for things I need installed. Every standup update this week was “waiting for IT ticket to be resolved” and at first I was thinking it was just me until a few people on my team told me they were not up and running for nearly 3 weeks when they started. What the hell!In my 8 YOE I’ve never worked for a company like this. It’s insanely frustrating. How is this a reasonable process for developers? Is this what bigger companies are like now?
>>109195884So you've only worked for small start ups?
>>109195944Nah you are larping, there is no way I need to go through IT to install node packages
>>109195856same anon, using it since the pentium days>torrent anything i find remotely interesting>always skeptical of anything that requires a license or subscription or the cloud or even AIall i know that deep down in my heart, the dumber the computer the better it is
>>109195884>Is this what bigger companies are like now?mostly, it's insane, but the worst part - more you'll stay the more you will get used to it. learned helplessness is a hell of a drug.
5YoE, FAANG.I guess I'm dealing with a sense of burnout. I'm really lacking the energy to do things. I don't know if it's a health issue, but I don't think it is. I eat well and I'm feel fairly fit and okay, but I'm just tired. With AI, I've started to expected myself to be more productive. When I'm not, and because my raw skills have atrophied, I often find myself stuck in an endless loop of wishful prompting. I've come to depend on AI so heavily that the costs of that dependence outweigh what I gain from itLately I've been finding myself stuck more and more often, which has definitely exacerbated this feeling.Anyone else in the same boat?
>>109195856Why are you revealing your power level? Just lie and say you're part of a family plan that has everything and it was one of the apps on a roku. Don't say emulating just say you were playing an old game and if they ask if you still have an old Nintendo just say yeah. If they're an epic gamer they'll follow up and you'll know. If not you gave them easy answers to digest without actual lying about your interests.
>>109196451Delete your social media accounts, uninstall youtube and get NewPipe. You're unironically getting mentally raped by short form content. You'll see the difference in just 1 week.
>>109196490 I stopped giving a shit about hiding my powerlevel years agoI just find it extremely disappointing that everyone in tech is such a turbo-normalfag
>>109196451>>109196507what's up with the reddit spacing. hello?
>>109196554Yes my experience as well. I mostly work with the extremely annoying millennial phenotypes. Worst is a bitch who is strict with times, constantly curses (but it gets tolerated since women), constantly blames. Then ofc she talks about her kids in high school... this women just turned 32. Amazing decision to make this cunt a product owner, not sure who she sucked off for that position.
>>109196451Yes. Pure dev with AI is just mindless prompting nowadays, testing and then fixing it or instructing the LLM to apply multiple fixes then test it again. If AI can not solve the problem or gets stuck in a loop of nonsense then I just don't want to do the task. The task will not be small since it typically involves 100-1000 lines of code and I need to take a very thorough look. I rarely solve easy problems anymore I just think of the prompt to ask, then copy pasta the 5-8 lines of code. > Did AI actually make you more productive? At the easier tasks yes. At very repetitive work where you're just copy pasting lines of code and adjusting small parts of it so you get a certain output, yes definitely. But it still sucks at harder problems, problems that involve processes or overall architecture and some technical problems it will just get into loops of giving you wrong answers. I did enjoy working in this field a lot more before it became all about AI LLM slop. I reckon it boosts overall output as a backend dev by like 30-40% though. Those 100-300% productivity claims are memes. Most of the problems you encounter are business problems, process problems or architecture problems. All of which AI is rather mediocre at besides delivering basic information on things.
>>109196557reddit website chuddie
I am le tired le bros.
>>109196451Yes. One thing I think is a matter of motivation, I know my code could be better if I paid more attention, I just take the easy route and give it to the AI too often. But the other thing is that AI really produces more code than can be understood deeply, so there will be some debt, even with perfect discipline (but less than without discipline)The other option would be to slow down, but my company wouldn't accept that.People also have zero respect for AI coding, not for the skill that's still required, nor the energy required. I get random messages to do stuff at night to stsrt some task with the reasoning that "lol, it's just a prompt, will take 5 minutes", but it never takes 5 minutes.
>>109196451IT infra fag from F100 here - 20 years of exp.I admitted to myself I'm burnt out about a year ago. It feels like : You wake up in the morning and unfortunetly you didn't die in the sleep so you have to go there for another day of pain and suffering. If you'll get one more extra thing to handle you will collapse, but you'll get it and you'll just postpone some other task that needs to be done. There is no feeling of accomplishment of anything. Just grind. Important problems are visible only to you, you can't do them and they force you attend conf calls with rajesh and middle aged women for something trivial and mostly pointless. You talk to your boss and he is in the same mood as you...How did it I get here? >>109198260First, i dont live in USA and i apply via linkedin to all kinds of companies, as long as the job requires my stack but its been 3 months of nothing. Due to my history, i tend to be called by the HR of very large companies. It is not like im constatly rejecting offers from startups and smaller comps. But they just dont interview me, even if i apply to a lot of them.Mostly of time i just talk to HR time wasters. Also i try to show my pluses but nobody gives a shit as i said. My last technical interview i was talking about these perf optimizations i had previously worked with like refactoring parallel request or server threading improvs but the guy clearly didnt give a shit about. BTW i believe he rejected me because i told that for a system handling couple thousands requests a day moving to hexagonal arch is a meme and waste of time. But yeah, for some reason in java you often find these hexagonal evangelists trying to solve this shit even to a simple crud internal app.

after months of looking I finally found a role that seems semi relevant. It is a CRM Data Coordinator where a big part of the job would be cleaning data and making sure its correct, lots of excel and some SQL. The salary is 50k plus benefits and bonuses. It would be a new role for the company and the CTO mentioned that there could room to grow, but that the start would be a lot of data entry. He also mentioned that a recent IT Support guy was able to transition within to SWE. My goals are to get to data analyst, business analyst, or data engineering - something like that. The role is hybrid and every other friday is off so I do think Ill have enough time to self study if I need to. At first I was excited, but now I feel like I messed up idk.

What can I expect in a Software QA role?
>>109205002I'm a staff level QA and here is more or less what the field looks like right now:>Company mandates AI usage>Management demands AI be used to implement TDD and/or replicate Google's automation CI/CD coverage>Use agentic AI to write manual test cases>Use agentic AI to write automation test cases in playwright or seleniumNone of that is really ideal because you'll never have adequate requirements with which to provide your agent to derive anything useful, so you're left with a lot of borderline slop used to validate the company's MVP just in time for whatever quarterly meetings the suits have.QA is really messy right now because quality builds over time, but the entire corporate world is anti-time and therefore you're stuck walking a really shitty tightrope.Try your best not to make your software engineers hate you. You'll fail, but you still need to try.

>>109205118Hm, I was a software engineer albeit at a smaller company where I had to do my own QA, the market has made me explore other options.
>>109205145You can be a real developer and embrace AI use to increase productivity without making your systems unmaintainable.
>>109205177Having devs do their own qa is really inefficient for the dev because both fields require significantly different cognitive loads. It's a nightmare to balance in an agile company.Dev teams should be encouraged to write unit tests and some integration tests which logically fit within the repo. The value add of QA is most visible when they can perform exploratory testing with the product along with building durable end to end automation. Both of those things are significantly out of scope for a typical software engineer and would only slow down the delivery schedule.

>>109205328It really makes you think.
>>109205145>>Makes 5 apps and starts selling them>>Actually making big profitsWhich 5 apps?
>>109205224I highly disagree atp. The dev already has to do QA and requirements gathering during the course of their work. Nothing is ever completely specced for them. By the time the dev is nearing task completion they have maximal context. This is where it gets annoying. There is a handoff to QA and you restart the process of understanding the task, ramping up context, going through testing progressions, and it frequently CONTINUES to involve the dev rather than freeing them up to move on to other work. In many ways you double the time spent agonizing over the ask, what's broken and what isn't.Within individual teams, engineers/devs should be expected to do their own QA. With that said we do a poor job of training devs to do QA. They should learn to battle test their work better and agonize themselves over not introducing regressions into a system or incomplete work. Now that the pace of coding is far quicker thanks to AI, devs have more time to do QA and should learn to do so better. Further organizations need to start taking regressions and bugs more seriously and holding devs accountable when they introduce them, this will result in better thorough work.My ideal org would have engineers that think more like a user and do better QA, write better automated tests. You could then have dedicated testing/QA teams that operate exclusively within staging and use the system like beta testers, looking for regressions and formulating potential improvements.

Happy monday saars kindly review ticket please
With new models getting released, especially fable 5, I have come to realised that some of the better frontier models, paired with anyone who knows how to use them, can beat 95% of SWEs who code manually. (And considering most of us are students/early careers, we definitely wont be in the 5% that AI cant replace anytime soon)Unless you are working on some extremely niche tech stack with minimal training data or otherwise, most frontier models can do almost everything swe related very decently. 90% of SWE jobs are mundane CRUD apps or otherwise and I feel its a matter of time before SWE experiences a heavy manpower crunch with less roles and more non technical people entering. (Ive already seen some big companies asking backend devs to do frontend and qa to write webapps, eliminating multiple roles)This got me thinking if it is time to start considering "insurance plans" like running side hustles or considering alternative backup career plans if everything goes down the drain. Been applying for non swe jobs occasionally to see if anything sticks. Anyone here have similar concerns and what are you doing?
