Discuss our favorite Gnu Image Manipulation Tool
>>
>>109199496
I liked gimp until they made non destructive edits, and my friends hated gimp until they added non destructive edits. Made the program slow as hell on my computer and it's honestly extremely confusing for me. What can be done about this if I dislike the new editing style?
>>
>>109199496
I wish there was an easier way to remove backgrounds from images like in photoshop.
>>
>>109199496
I think gimp just has a notorious reputation about being bad.
I always assumed it was absolutely horrible until maybe a week ago when I saw a vid of some guy on youtube showing how he made a flyer for his cookie shop. Was surprised at how good it was.
I have no actual use case personally for editing software like that but if I did I'll probably use gimp.

To each their own but I really like the new non-destructive editing system. Before then I would have to make a duplicate of a layer before applying a filter or color adjustment so in case I later ended up not liking the edit I made and wanted to alter it and/or try something else, I wouldn't be out of luck.

It's heavy, it's convoluted, but I try to use it as much as I can to get used to it. It's nice. I still have Paint.NET for quicker, lighter edits as yes, I am using Windows and I don't hate GIMP all that much, once you let yourself get mindraped by GNOMEfaggotry it's a nice tool.

Can anyone explain to me why the fuck you would ever want "paste as new layer" to be the default behavior for ctrl-V?

Previously:
>want to copy pixels from here to there within the current layer? 1. rectangle select, 2. ctrl-C, 3. ctrl-V, 4. drag the floating layer where you want it, 5. click off of it to anchor
>want to make new layer instead? 1. rectangle select, 2. ctrl-C, 3. ctrl-V, 4. drag the floating layer where you want it, 5. new layer (ctrl-shift-N)

Now:
>within the current layer: 1. rectangle select, 2. ctrl-C, 3. ctrl-V, 4. switch to the move tool (M), 5. drag it where you want it, 6. merge down (alt-L W), 7. don't forget to deselect all (ctrl-shift-A) because it keeps your original selection for some fucking reason and if you forget to clear it before you try to draw then nothing fucking happens
>new layer: 1. rectangle select, 2 ctrl-C, 3. ctrl-V, 4. switch to the move tool (M), 5. drag it where you want it, 6. don't forget you still have to deselect (ctrl-shift-A) lmao

So they made the #1 most common use of copy-paste worse in order to streamline - oh wait, no, they didn't streamline anything, they made the less common use case worse too

I unironically tried switching to Krita over this, but it turns out Krita does the exact same thing. Do people actually want this behavior? Am I insane?

this isn't true. there was an initial experiment that involved making a Qt frontend to gimp ("KIMP"), but that never amounted to anything, and they decided to make a new image editor from scratch using C++ (and Qt) instead. they being some kde guys.
even if there was any actual gimp code used (which i doubt since the kde guys prefer C++, and gimp/gtk is mostly C), the "kimp" experiement happened in 1998, so it's not like there'd any any recognisable similaries between them at this point anyway

I like GIMP. It's pretty good for making small to medium edits and memes, which is what I mostly use it for. It was also my first "serious" image editing program I learned how to use, so I can't really compare it to Photoshop. Even if PS turned out to be better for something I'm trying to do, I'd rather deal with GIMP's bullshit than Adobe's. Knowing a software I use won't suddenly update and paywall/remove some functionality just because it benefits the developers is one of the major advantages of Free Software so me,
>>
>>109199539
No it was genuinely a piece of shit made by noartists that had no idea what was important until some major a year or so ago.
They thought that having tools and features were important when work flow is king.
You couldn't shift click to select multiple layers so anybody doing anything serious was forced to drag layers one by one like a filthy animal. The noartists didn't care because they only work on a single layer touching up photos nobody cares about.
If you liked GIMP before that update then you are a legit retard noartist and now after the update GIMP has reached the lofty heights as only merely usable.

I used to do this by hand.

>manually edit every path section to match curve
>manually inset the line just barely inside the old outline
>delete background + a little old outline
>manually color match a new anti-aliased outline around the entire subject
lol. all i wanted at the time was to be able to move the path/new outline in real time like a vector. this was before non destructive editing btw.
idk if it works like that now, just use AI.

Photoshop and Krita arent 1 to 1 in terms of scope.

GIMP = photo editing (although you can do some design and drawing)
Krita = Drawing and organic design (although you can do some editing)

Photoshop does both, and its undoubtedly better, but its expensive as fuck.

Gimp and Krita are enough together to replace PS, but individually they aren't enough to.
