It is nice to get SMS notifications on KDE Connect on my computer but one of the weak points of it is the SMS messenger built in (which is slow and sucks and doesn't show me when I sent an SMS message)

You don't need to switch.

Settings > Apps > Messages > More settings (might be 3 dots) > Uninstall Updates.

It will prompt you to delete everything and restore the app to factory settings. This is fine. Disabling, uninstalling, deleting, clearing the data of, etc. Samsung Messages or Google Messages will NOT delete your actual conversation history. Your text messages are stored in a System App named "Phone and Messaging Storage", not Samsung Messages. This applies to all Android devices. Upon restarting, the app will be repopulated with your texts.

Settings > Apps > Messages > Messages Settings > More Settings > Multimedia Messages > Toggle Group Conversation on.

Have fun continuing to use use Samsung Messages.
