The hiring side of the labor market is just as broken. Junior positions are being flooded by Indian applicants with "masters degrees" playing immigration games on F1-OPT, while senior position listings just get washed up guys in their 40s who are unable or unwilling to adapt to the AI reality.

If you are smart and kinda autistic, there isn't a better time or opportunity than now. Software engineers aren't being replaced, useless code monkeys, jira jannies, and people with no initiative or entrepreneurial spirit are being replaced.

If I was young and unemployed, here's what I would do:

- First, never doom. Ignore everything you see coming from the bay area grind culture on twitter, especially from the women. This is performative nonsense and no one takes them seriously.
- Don't waste your time with leetcode or competitive programming challenges unless you really enjoy them. I am hiring you because you can provide value to my business, not because you can reverse a linked list. Practice with free tier AI tools instead.
- Claude can build a fullstack web app in one prompt now. Being able to code isn't a differentiator. You're not a "coder" anymore, you're an applied problem solver. Learn to identify problems, stakeholders, and deliverables.
- Remember you can just do things. Talk to claude code like it's a person. Ask questions about things you don't know. It's ok to not know things, being able to quickly get context on something you aren't familiar with and make informed decisions on is probably the single most valuable skill you can build.
- If you're going to have a presence on github, include agent markdown files, ADR decision logs, etc. It's not really what you build that's important, it's more of how you build it.
- Avoid Fortune 500 companies. You're throwing your resume in a lottery with all of Bangalore.

Just be confident, optimistic, intellectually curious and great things will come to you.

Somewhat similar to me. I have sort of a partime side job that is in the ballpark of CS, but wouldn't consider it software development. I can read code well but never really pushed myself to understand more higher level system concepts. But I've actually come to realize I don't really care for the field. To me it truly does appear that everything is just surveillance. Doing other things now in the real world and starting to think about different avenues that have little to no use of computers in general. Maybe a time will come for me where I end up seeing something where my interest picks up at hardware level stuff. So Thursday I met the guy. He knew I had no experience and said he'll see how it goes before deciding on a wage. Up front he asked if I knew how to terminate a cat6. I said no and he showed me how and I had to try like 3 times before he was satisfied. Then he got me on a scissorlift doing it and connecting some cameras and wifi extenders. What I thought was going to just be an interview and look around ended up being a full day's work. I also came back Friday and repeated mostly the same things. (Looking back, that was really stupid going on a lift since I don't have insurance. But I'm not scared of heights and it didn't feel dangerous so I didn't care at the time.)

I'm shy and a coward, so I have a hard time standing my ground and asking about money. And I know I'm not exactly "qualified" for this job so it's hard to gauge when this "testing period" is over. He did ask me to come back Monday, so I'm definitely going to bring it up first thing in the morning or walk out...

I never had to deal with asking for my salary because larger companies usually have HR to cover this. They will say the wage on the ad and you immediately sign papers and get on a system to log hours. But this time there was no contract or anything. And in America it's often considered "rude" to bring it up.
