Let's discuss the technological marvel that is the NES
>>
>>109226846
Always wanted to learn how to make rom hacks but the asm filtered me. Apparently Sega's consoles are better in that regard because they use a more expensive CPU or something.
>>
I always thought NES was too barebones to have good games on it.
yes, they may have been foundational at the time, but looking at it without rose-colored glasses, there isn't anything there that really makes me want to go back and play something.

There's a lot of good games on the NES
>>
nes and master system were lame consoles. snes & genesis were leaps ahead.
>>
>>109226891
The Game Boy is a better designed system than the NES, GB assembly is also nicer to work with

>>109226846
The Japanese version of Castlevania both looks and sounds better than the US version (looks because no censorship, sounds because there was a chip in the Japanese cartridge that gave it an extra audio channel/instrument).
>>
>>109226944
Castlevania III* not Castlevania, sorry
>>
>>109226939
NES came first
>>
>>109226939
>hardware from a decade later was leaps ahead
yeah, no fucking shit
>>

nice>>109226846
>>
>>109226914
next you're gonna say the games feel too "liminal"
>>
>>109226965
liminal games? sounds intriguing, I'd play those.

8 bit games were beyond basic they were like atari dogshit. 16bit is when games got good and cartridge sizes increased enough to do full out jrpgs.

The only good JRPG is Chrono Trigger

shut up faggot
>>
I liked the console shell itself. I like building PCs inside the shells, but the games themselves were shit.
>>
>>109227075
I like putting consoles into PC cases.
>>
>>109226990
Play Final Fantasy III on Famicom and tell me that it's not a full-out JRPG
>>
>>109227001
Why is the guy sitting so big
>>
>>109228061
that happens when you sit for too long.

for you
>>
>>109228061
Yeah I've seen this happen in other games. I'd like to think you are supposed to understand the scene as it being a POV of the character
>>
>>109226936
>There's a lot of good games on the NES
Yeah, like Contra. You ever played Contra? Man, I fucking love Contra. So many good games on that console. Contra is one of them, of course.
>>
>>109228282
>Contra
What's that? I only played Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and T&C Surf Designs.
>>
>>109227075
I like putting consoles into other consoles
>>
>>109226990
That shit filters me out so much it's not even funny.
>3d perspective completely in 2d
>compass
>minimap
I have zero fucking idea on how I would even begin programming something like that.
I want to be good enough, but I am not.
I'm retarded.
>>
>>109228898
It's pretty easy, actually.
>>
>>109226990
Wrong.
Every console generation has seen diminishing returns. The leap from Atari dogshit to NES was objectively bigger than the leap from NES to SNES. Your zoomie brain just can't comprehend the leap because it's rotten, and sees Atari and NES the same. SAD!
>>109228282
Low quality bait

Please elaborate.

I think mode 7 works identical to Wolfenstein 3D rendering. Something about X column of texture rendering at Y scanline at Z height
>>
>>109228898
>>3d perspective completely in 2d

it was done by the console. you just had to fill the matrix's registers.

I agree.

For example you can't do a good Alien/Metroid game on 8-bit, the graphics are too simple and the controls too unresponsive.
Just take a look at how big the Alien in Contra has to be so you can actually see something.
In a world where arcade cabinets with graphics better than the Genesis & SNES were already available.

There was an actual SUPERIOR console but which poorfags couldn't afford.
>>
>>109226891
6502 assembly is pretty good when you get the hang of it and find a toolchain that ACTUALLY FUCKIN' WORKS
>>
>>109233913
>and find a toolchain that ACTUALLY FUCKIN' WORKS
cc65 is all you need.

Assembly at that level really isn't too hard, it's kind of fun. The problem nowadays is everything is too fucking complicated. But with a simple 8bit CPU its nice and comfy, just the right amount of complexity you can realistically understand the whole thing.
Also limitations inspire more creativity.
>>
>>109234100
I find the PS2 CPU in MIPS extremely comfy.
>>
>>109226846
>technological marvel
>NES
lmao

>>109233996
>cc65
no. ca65 is all you need.

>>109234136
it's very good until you have to start dealing with the video hardware and keeping the rendering pipeline going. rendering a cube with a texture map is an exercise of pure torture. shouldn't surprise anyone why everyone moved to c/c++ by this stage. hardware was getting way too complicated to program everything just using assembly.

>16bit is when games got good
Yeah I see what you mean, this is much better
>>
>>109226914
The good ones are timeless.
Super Mario Brothers 3
Legend of Zelda
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out
Kirby's Adventure
Mega Man games
Castlevania 1

Those games all have lessons in good design that modern devs would do well to consider. Some are fairly well-ingrained in the culture (Mario, Mega Man). Some less so (zelda 1, punch-out). More is not always better. Modern devs have to choose their limitations.
>>
>>109226990
Depends on the genre you want. 8 bit jarpigs don't hold up too well, but simple platformers do. To compare with Atari just shows you know nothing about the jump between blatantly inferior knock-offs of single-screen quarter-munchers with simple geometric shapes for sprites, and real 2D side scrolling platform games with momentum, animated cartoony sprites, battery-backed saves on action-adventure games with incremental progress. (Home Computers had progress and RPGs and such, but were usually really bad at arcade-style action)
>>
>>109234467
Just because the chip is more capable doesn't mean lazy ass devs will use said capability. Also baseball is boring and autistic so perhaps that is an optimal interface since baseball fags only give a shit about dumb ass statistics anyway.
>>
>>109234690
I only somewhat liked Blaster Master.
>>
>>109226990
>MUH JARPIGS
Stfu retard
>>
>>109234690
All of those have been obsoleted by later games, usually in the same franchise. The only NES games I would seriously recommend to people who know nothing about them are ones with straight banger chiptunes like Mega Man 2.
>>
>>109226990
>they were like atari dogshit
Way to out yourself as never having played the NES and Atari.
>>
>>109233835
>controls too unresponsive
This has nothing to do with the hardware
>>
>>109235633
Congrats you completely missed the point
>>
>>109235633
why are baseball haters such dogshit for brain retards
>>
>>109226990
SMB is fun to play tho
